Some infinite series involving hyperbolic functions arxiv: v [math.nt] 9 Jul 07 Ce Xu School of Mathematical Sciences, Xiamen University Xiamen 36005, P.R. China Abstract This paper develops an approach to the evaluation of infinite series involving hyperbolic functions. By using the approach, we give explicit formulae for several classes of series of hyperbolic functions in terms of Riemann zeta values. Moreover, we also establish many relations involving two or more series of hyperbolic functions. Furthermore, we obtain the Ramanujan s formula for ζn+ and find another similar formulae. The approach is based on simple contour integral representations and residue computations. Some interesting known or new consequences and illustrative examples are considered. 2 respectively. These polynomials are defined by the generating functions [4] te xt e t = n=0 B n x tn n! for t < and e xt e t + = n=0 E n x tn n! for t <. The Bernoulli numbers are always denoted by B n and are defined by the relation B n = B n 0 for n = 0,,,..., when B 0 =, B =,B = 6,B 4 = 30,B 6 = 4,... The Euler numbers E n are defined by setting E n = n E n for n = 0,,,... The E n are all integral, and E 0 =, E =, E 4 = 5, E 6 = 6,... The subject of this paper is hyperbolic functions. The basic hyperbolic functions are the hyperbolic sine sinh and the hyperbolic cosine cosh from which are derived the hyperbolic tangent tanh, hyperbolic cosecant csch or cosech, hyperbolic secant sech, and hyperbolic cotangent coth, corresponding to the derived trigonometric functions. They may be defined in terms of the exponential function: sinhx = ex e x, coshx = ex +e x, tanhx = sinhx coshx = ex e x e x +e x, cothx = coshx sinhx = ex +e x e x e x, x 0, sechx = coshx = e x +e x, cschx = sinhx = e x e x, x 0,. Infinite series involving the hyperbolic functions have attracted the attention of many authors. Berndt s papers [5,6,9,0] and paper [] with A. Straub, and his books [7,8] and his fourth book with Andrews [] contain many such results well as numerous references. The purposes of this paper are to establish some relations between Riemann zeta function and infinite series involving hyperbolic functions. Furthermore, we evaluate some partial fraction expansions of several quadratic products involving hyperbolic and trigonometric function, and give explicit formulae. Moreover, we obtain the Ramanujan s formula for ζn + and a similar identity. Finally, we evaluate two series involving harmonic number and hyperbolic function, and
establish two general formulae. The results which we present here can be seen as an extension of Berndt s work. As a result, we attain many expressions for the combined infinite series involving hyperbolic functions by the Riemann zeta values, which contain most of the known results and some new relations. For example, we obtain n sinh n + coshn sinh n + ζ = 0. In this paper we will use the contour integration and residue theorem to prove our main results. The contour integration is a classical technique for evaluating infinite sums by reducing them to a finite number of residue computations. This summation mechanism is formalized by a lemma that goes back to Cauchy and is nicely developed throughout [3]. The Riemann zeta function ζs is defined by ζs := ns,rs >. When s = k k N is an even, Euler gave the famous formula ζk = k B k k. k! The formula not only provides an elegant formula for evaluating ζk, but it also tells us of the arithmetical nature of ζk. In contrast, we know very little about ζk +. One of the major achievements in number theory in the past half-century are R. Apéry s proof that ζ3 is irrational [3], but for k, the arithmetical nature of ζk + remains open. Further results for k, please see Zudilin s paper [,]. The following lemma will be useful in the development of the main theorems. Lemma. [3] Let ξs be a kernel function and let rs be a function which is Os at infinity. Then s=α + α OResrsξs Resrsξs s=β = 0.. β S where S is the set of poles of rs and O is the set of poles of ξs that are not poles rs. Here Resrs s=α denotes the residue of rs at s = α. The kernel function ξs is meromorphic in the whole complex plane and satisfies ξs = os over an infinite collection of circles z = ρ k with ρ k. Five general Theorems In [3], P. Flajolet and B. Salvy gave the following asymptotic formulae cotz z n = z n ζkz n k,. k= z n = n sinz z n + ζkz n k,. 3 k=
where n is integer namely n = 0,±,±,±3,, and ζs denotes the alternating Riemann zeta function defined by ζs := n n s = s ζs, Rs. Then using the basic relation sinx = cos x and the following relations between trigonometric functions and hyperbolic functions sinx = isinhix,sinhx = isinix,cosx = coshix,coshx = cosix, tanx = itanhix,tanhx = itanix,cotx = icothix,cothx = icotix, by a simple calculation, the following identities are easily derived cothz z ni = z ni k ζkz ni k,.3 k= z ni = n sinhz z ni + k ζkz ni k,.4 k= tanz z n = z n + k= ζk z n k,.5 n z i tanhz = z n i k= k ζk z n k i,.6 cosz n z = n z n + k= ζk z n k,.7 coshz n z i = n i z n i + k ζk z n k i..8 Next, we will use the formulae.-.8 and Lemma. to prove our main results. k= 4
. Main theorems and Corollaries Now we state our main results. The main results of this section are the following five theorems. Theorem. For any positive integer k > and reals x,y with x,y 0, then ny nx coth coth x x k y + k y y k x = n k x k + k y k ζk k +k =k, k,k n k k x k y k ζk ζk..9 Theorem. 6 Setting α = y x and β = α y namely αβ = in Theorem.-.5, we can readily deduce the following corollaries. Corollary.6 [6] If k > is a positive integer number and α,β are real numbers such as αβ =, then αβ k cothnα n k + k α k β = β k + k α k ζk cothnβ k +k =k, k,k n k k α k β k ζk ζk..4 Corollary.7 If k is a positive integer number and α,β are real numbers such as αβ =, then αβ k n n k sinhnα + k α k n β n k sinhnβ = β k + k α k ζk+ k α k β k ζk ζk..5 k +k =k, k,k Corollary.8 If k is a positive integer number and α,β are real numbers such as αβ =, then αβ k n k sinhnα + k α k cothnβ β n k n = β k k k α k ζk+ k α k β k ζk ζk..6 k +k =k, k,k Corollary.9 If k > is a positive integer number and α,β are real numbers such as αβ =, then n n tanh α αβ k tanh β n k + k α k β n k = k k B k B k α k β k k..7 k +k =k, k,k k!k! Corollary.0 If k is a non-negative integer number and α,β are real numbers such as αβ =, then β k n n k+ n cosh = E k E k k!k! αk β k k +k =k, k,k 0 n n k+ n cosh β k k α k α 6
Note that the Corollary.7,.9 and.0 have been given by Chapter 4 of Berndt s [8]. It should be emphasized that the Chapter 4 also contains many other types of results. Then from the definitions of hyperbolic cotangent and tangent, we know that cothx = + e x and tanhx = e x +. Hence, substituting above formulae into.4 and.7, respectively, by a direct calculation, we obtain the Ramanujan s formula for ζn+ and a similar formula that { } 4β k ζk + n k e nα = 4α k { ζk + n k e nβ k j B j B k j j!k j! αj β k j,.9 j=0 } and α k {ηk β k {ηk = k +k =k, k,k } e n α + e n β + k k B k B k α k β k,.0 k!k! } where the function ηs defined by It is obvious that ηs := n s,rs >. ηs = s ζs. The Ramanujan s formula for ζn+.9 appears as Entry i in Chapter 4 of Ramanujan s second notebook [8]. It also appears in a formerly unpublished manuscript of Ramanujan that was published in its original handwritten form with his lost notebook [9]. The first published proof of.9 is due to S.L. Malurkar [5] in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society in This partial manuscript was initially examined in detail by the B.C. Berndt in [9], and by G.E. Andrews and B.C. Berndt in their fourth book on Ramanujan s lost notebook []. There exist a huge number of generalizations and analogues of Ramanujan s formula for ζn+. Some of these are discussed in Berndt s paper [6] and his book [8]. In fact, The Ramanujan s formula for ζn + is a special instance of a general transformation formula for generalized analytic Eisenstein series or, in another formulation, for a vast generalization of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function, see []. 7
. Proofs of Theorem.-.5 In the context of this paper, the results of Theorem.-.5 can be proved by applying the following kernels and base functions see Table. kernel function ξz base function rz combined function rz ξz cothyz cotxzcothyz cotxz sinxz cotxz tanxz cosxz z p z p sinhyz z p sinhyz tanhyz z p z p coshyz z p z p sinxzsinhyz cotxz z p sinhyz tanxztanhyz z p z p cosxzcoshyz TABLE.. kernels and base functions To prove Theorem., we consider the function f z = cotxzcothyz z p, p. The only singularities are poles at the z = n x and n i, where n Z = {0,±,±,...}. For y n Z\{0} = {±,±,±3,...}, these poles are simple, then using the formulae. and.3, we can deduce that these residues are [ Res f z,z = n ] = x p coth x [ Res f z,z = n ] = x p coth x Res [f z,z = ny ] coth i = y p Res [f z,z = ny ] coth i = y p ny x n p, n N ny x n p p+, n N nx y n p p+ i p+, n N nx y n p i p+, n N. When z 0, using the formulae. and.3 again, we can find that f z z 0 = z k y k ζkz k x k ζkz k k= k= z p.. xy +4 k x k y k ζk ζk z k +k k,k = Hence, the residue of the pole of order p+ at 0 is found to be Res[f z,z = 0] = z p+ p+! dz p+ f z z=0 d p+ 8
= xy +4 k y k ζk x k ζk k=p+,k.. k x k y k ζk ζk k=p+,k k +k =p+,k,k Applying Lemma. and summing these residues with setting p = k k > yields the statement of the Theorem.. Similarly, to prove the Theorem.-.5, we need to consider the following four combined functions f z = z p sinxzsinhyz, f 3z = cotxz z p sinhyz, f 4 z = tanxztanhyz z p, f 5 z = z p cosxzcoshyz. Then applying the same arguments as in the proof of Theorem. with the help of formulae.-.8 we may easily deduce these results. Note that in prove Theorem.4 and.5, we used the following results of Power series expansions [4] n n tanx = n! n n tanh = n! secx = sechx = n=0.3 Some simple examples n=0 E n n! xn,x < 4, E n n! xn,x < 4. B n x n,x < 4, B n x n,x < 4, From subsection., we can obtain many results involving hyperbolic functions. Some interesting known or new examples follows: cothn n 3 = ,.3 n n 3 sinhn = 360 4,.4 n tanh n 3 n n n cosh = 4 3,.5 = 8,.6 9

B.C. Berndt and A. Straub[] apply the Mittag-Leffler Theorem to find the mistake. Moreover, they offer a corrected version of 3. that cot wα coth wβ = w + log β α + { nαcothnα w+n α + nβcothnβ } w n β by using the correct partial fraction decomposition given by R. Sitaramachandrarao [0] ny nx xycotxcothy = +ζ y x x coth y coth xy x y nn x + nn y. In fact, if we consider the function f z = cotxzcothyz z a or cotxzcothyzz z a. 3.4 Then applying the same arguments as in the proof of Theorem., we may deduce the formula 3.. However, from Lemma. and the definition of hyperbolic cotangent, we find that cothyz = + z a z a e yz = z a + z ae yz. Hence, if z, we have cothyz z a = O z O z. Therefore, according to the condition of Lemma. holds, we know that we can t usethelemma. to evaluate the residues of function fz defined by 3.4. But if we consider the function g z = cotxzcothyz zz a. Then by a similar argument as in the proof of Theorem., we deduce that ny [ Res g z,z = ± n ] = x coth x x nn a x, nx Res [g z,z = ± ny ] coth i = y y nn +a y, Res[g z,z = ±a] = cotxacothya a, Res[g z,z = 0] = a 4 xy ζ y a x x. y
Hence, summing all residues yields the formula xycotxacothya = a +ζ y x ny nx a x coth a y coth xy x y nn a x + nn a y. 3.5 Letting a = in 3.5, the result is 3.3. In this section, by using the residue theorem, we give the partial fraction expansion of several quadratic products involving hyperbolic and trigonometric function of the form sin wαsinh cot, wβ where αβ =. wα sinh wβ,tan wα tanh wβ, 3. Some identities on series of hyperbolic function cos wαcosh wβ, Applying Lemma. and formulae.-.8, we can get the following theorem. Theorem 3. For any reals a,x,y 0 with xa ± n n Z, then the following identities hold: sinxasinhya = a xy + n n n n nx ny, n +a y sinh n a x sinh y x 3.6 cotxa sinhya = a xy + nx n coth y n +a y n n n a x sinh ny x, 3.7 tanxatanhya 6a = n n x tanh x y y tanh x n [n xa ] + y n [n +ya ] 3.8, 6a cosxacoshya = 6a + y n [ n n +ya ] cosh n y x x n [ n n xa ]. 3.9 n cosh x y

To prove the formulae , we consider the four functions see Table 3. g z = g 3 z = z asinxzsinhyz, cotxz z asinhyz, g 4 z = tanxztanhyz zz a, g 5 z = zz a cosxzcoshyz. Then by a similar argument as in the proof of formula 3.5, we may easily deduce these results If a = these results were also proved in Berndt s book [8] by another method. A large number of formulae aries from partial fraction decompositions. For more details, see Chapter 4, pp of his book [8]. It is obvious that proceeding in a similar method to evaluation of the , it is possible that some of similar results of partial fraction expansion can be obtained. For example, we can also deduce the following well known identities [8] n n n 4 a 4 sinhn = ncothn n 4 a 4 = 4a a 4a a cotacotha 3. Four partial fraction expansion formulae sinasinha. Setting the transformation α = x y,β = y x,w = xya in formulae , by a simple calculation we can obtain these partial fraction expansions sin wαsinh wβ = w + { cot wα sinh wβ = w + {, βn n w βn sinhβn + n n w +αn sinhαn }, 3.0 βn w βn sinhβn + αncothαn } w+αn n, 3. 3

First, we consider the function h z = coth z sinz z k, k N. The function only singularities are poles at the integers and ±ni. By a direct calculation, we find that Res[h z,z = ±n] = coth z n k n, n N, Res[h z,z = ±ni] = k k coshn n k+ sinhn + k n k sinh n, n N, Res[h z,z = 0] = ζk + { k k+} { } + ζk ζk k+ 4 k k +8 k +k =k, k,k k +k +k 3 =k, k,k,k 3 Hence, applying Lemma. we obtain the result that k +k k 3 ζk ζk ζk 3. coth z n k n +k k n k+ sinhn + k { k k+} +ζk + + ζk ζk k +k =k, k,k { } k+ 4 k k 4 coshn n k sinh n

Letting k = in 4., 4.4 and k = in 4.3, we have n sinh n n coth n n n 4 sinh n + Using the well known identities [] we can get n 3 sinhn n sinh n coshn n k sinh n + ζ4 = 0, cothn n 5 3 ζ6 = 0, 4.6 cothn n 3 8ζ4 = 0, 4.7 n sinh n = G 3 30 ζ and cothn n 3 = 7 ζ4, coth n n = 9 ζ4+4ζg, where G denotes the Catalan s constant, which is related to the complete elliptic integral K Kk dx k sin x 0 by the expression G = 0 Kdx = n n+ = Two results involving harmonic number and hyperbolic function In this section, we give two formulae of infinite series involving harmonic number and hyperbolic function. Here the harmonic number H n is defined by [7] H n := n k= The generalized harmonic numbers H p n are defined by [3] k. n H n p = kp, p N. k= 6
Theorem 5. For positive integer p, then the following identity holds: + p+ + H n n p sinhn p+ p+ n cothn i p+ ψni+ p+ ψ ni+ +ζp+ { + p + +4 = 0, n +n =p+, n,n n p n +n +n 3 =p+, n,n,n 3 + p p n +n =p+, n,n [ p n p+ sinhn ] } + p n n ζn ζn n n ζn ζn + n n ζn ζn ζn p+ γ where The ψ function is the logarithmic derivative of the Gamma function, ψs = d ds lnγs = γ s + n n+s and it satisfies the complement formula Here Γz := 0 ψs ψ s = s cots. coshn n p sinh n 5. e t t z dt, Rz > 0 is called gamma function, and γ denotes the Euler- Mascheroni constant defined by n γ := lim n k lnn k= Proof. From [3], we have ψ z+γ z n = z n +H n + ψ z+γ z n = H n + k= = ψ k= k H n k+ ζk + z n k, n 0, H k+ n ζk+ z +n k, n > 0. Then applying the kernel cotzψ z+γ to the base function sinhzzp, p N, 7
namely, we need to consider the function Hz = cotzψ z+γ sinhzz p. The only singularities are poles at the integers and ±ni n N. Hence, a direct residue computation gives Res[Hz,z = n] = p n p+ sinhn coshn n p sinhn + H n n p sinhn, H n Res[Hz,z = n] = p+ n p sinhn, Res[Hz,z = ni] = n+p+ cothn n p ψ ni+γi p+, Res[Hz,z = ni] = n cothn n p ψni+γi p+, and Res[Hz,z = 0] =ζp+ { + p p p n +n =p+, n,n n +n +n 3 =p+, n,n,n 3 n +n =p+, n,n [ p ] } + p n n ζn ζn n n ζn ζn + n n ζn ζn ζn 3 +. Thus, summing these five contributions yields the statement of the theorem. When p = and p =, we give H n nsinhn = ζ3+ n sinhn + n 3 sinhn + coshn n sinh n cothn n 3 coshn nsinh n + n Theorem 5. For positive integer p, then the following identity holds: + p+ coshn n p sinh n n + n,k= H n n p sinhn n p+ p+ n p+ sinhn n n n p sinhn ip+ ψni+ p+ ψ ni+ kcothk nn +k k coth n n n = 45 4 ζ4. + p+ γ 8

By a similar argument as in the proof of Theorem 5., we can prove the Theorem 5.. Letting p = in 5. we obtain H n nsinhn n = ζ3+ n sinhn n + n n + kk +n sinhn. n,k= coshn nsinh n n By using the methods and techniques of the present paper, it is possible that some of similar identities involving harmonic numbers and hyperbolic functions can be proved. 6 Other some results involving hyperbolic function In [4], Apostol gave the following result of infinite product P x x P x = e x x, 6. where the product Px is defined by P x := e nx. Hence, from 6. we obtain the closed form of infinite products +e n = 4e, 6. 9
In [8], Berndt proved that which is equivalent to +e n = 4e 4, 6.3 +e n = 8e4, 6.4 +e n = 3 8e. 6.5 ne n = 4 4 log 3 +logγ, e n = 4e Γ 4 Then applying the formula 6., then we obtain e n = 4e4 3, 3 8Γ e 4n = 4e6 7, 3 8Γ e 4n = 8e, 6.0 e n = 8e Hence, by the definitions of hyperbolic cotangent and tangent, we have the relations cothnx n tanhnx n n = log+log n = log+log +e nx, 6. +e 4nx +e n x, 6.3 0
Thus, by combining the above related identities and using., we deduce that n coth n = 3 n 4 log+, 6.4 cothn n = n 4 log+ 6, 6.5 n coth n = n log+ 6, 6.6 n tanh n = n 4 log, nsinhn = log, nsinhn = 6 3 log, nsinh n = 6 log, 6.0 n sinhn = log Acknowledgments.
