1 NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS Volume ), SOME CONGRUENCES FOR PARTITION FUNCTIONS RELATED TO MOCK THETA FUNCTIONS ωq) AND νq) S.N. Fathima and Utpal Pore Received October 1, 2017) Abstract. Recently, Andrews, Dixit and Yee introduced partition functions p ωn), p νn), smallest parts functions spt ω n) and spt ν n), which are closely related to the Ramanujan/Watson mock theta functions ωq) and νq). In this paper we obtain new congruences modulo 20 for the partition function p ωn) which are extensions of the first explicit congruences for ωq) given by Waldherr. We give a simple proof of Wang s conjecture for the smallest parts function spt ω n) for k = 1, which is a special case of Andrews result spt ω 5n + ) 0 mod 5). 1. Introduction A partition of a positive integer n is a nonincreasing sequence of positive integers λ 1 λ 2 λ k such that λ 1 + λ 2 + λ k = n. Let pn) be the number of partitions of n. Then, for example p5) = 7. The seven partitions of 5 are 5, 4 + 1, + 2, , , , The generating function for pn) is given by pn)q n 1 = = 1, q; q) f 1 where throughout this paper, we define f k := q k ; q k ) = 1 q mk ). The third order mock theta functions ωq), νq) due to Ramanujan and Watson [7, 10], are defined by ωq) = νq) = q 2n2 +2n q; q 2 ) 2, n+1 q n2 +n q; q 2 ) n+1, m=1 where, as customary, for any complex numbers a and q < 1, a; q) n := 1 a)1 aq) 1 aq n 1 ) Mathematics Subject Classification 11P8, 05A17. 2 162 S.N. FATHIMA and UTPAL PORE Andrews et al. [1], introduced some new partition functions which are closely related to the mock theta functions ωq) and νq), p ω n)q n = q ωq), 1.1) where the function p ω n) counts the number of partitions of n in which all odd parts are less than twice the smallest part. For example, p ω 5) = 6. The six partitions of 5 it enumerates are 5, 4 + 1, + 2, , , p ν n)q n = ν q), 1.2) the function p ν n) counts the number of partitions of n in which the parts are distinct and all odd parts are less than twice the smallest part. For example, p ν 5) =. The three partitions of 5 it enumerates are 5, 4 + 1, + 2. Andrews et al. [1], defined the associated smallest parts function spt ω n), which counts the total number of smallest parts in the partitions enumerated by p ω n). For example, spt ω 5) = 12. We have 5, 4 + 1, + 2, , , They showed that the generating function of spt ω n) is spt ω n)q n q n = 1 q n ) 2 q n+1 ; q) n q 2n+2 ; q 2. 1.) ) Also in [1], spt ν n) counts the number of smallest parts in the partitions enumerated by p ν n), but it is clear that spt ν n) = p ν n) since the parts are distinct, and each partition has a unique smallest part. Using modular forms, Waldherr [8] obtained congruences equivalent to, Recently, Wang [9] proved some new congruences p ω 40n + 28) 0 mod 5), 1.4) p ω 40n + 6) 0 mod 5). 1.5) p ω 88n + r) 0 mod 11), where r {20, 52, 60, 68, 84}. 1.6) Also in his paper, he has made the following conjecture: For any integers k 1 and n 0, spt ω 2 5 2k 1 n + 7 ) 52k mod 5 2k 1 ). 1.7) 12 In Section of this paper, we prove the following congruences: For any integer n 0, p ω 40n + r) 0 mod 20), where r {28, 6}, which are extensions of 1.4) and 1.5). In Section 4, we give a simple proof of Wang s conjecture 1.7) for k = 1, which is also a special case of Theorem 6.2 in [1]. In the concluding section, we prove a number of arithmetic properties modulo 2 satisfied by p ω n) and p ν n). All of the proofs will follow from elementary generating function considerations and q series manipulations.
3 PARTITION FUNCTIONS RELATED TO MOCK THETA FUNCTIONS Preliminaries We require the following definitions and lemmas to prove the main results in the next three sections. For ab < 1, Ramanujan s general theta function fa, b) is defined as fa, b) = a nn+1)/2 b nn 1)/2. 2.1) n= Using Jacobi s triple product identity [4, Entry 19, p. 5], 2.1) becomes The special cases of fa, b) are fa, b) = a; ab) b; ab) ab; ab). 2.2) ϕq) :=fq, q) = ψq) :=fq; q ) = q n2 = q; q 2 ) 2 q 2 ; q 2 ) = f 2 5 f1 2f 4 2, 2.) q nn+1)/2 = q2 ; q 2 ) q; q 2 ) = f 2 2 f ) Lemma 2.1. 5 PARTITION FUNCTIONS RELATED TO MOCK THETA FUNCTIONS Proof of Wang s Conjecture In the next theorem, we prove Wang s conjecture 1.7) for k = 1. Theorem 4.1. For all n 0, Proof. From 2.8), we have spt ω 10n + ) 0 mod 5). 4.1) Using 2.9), we obtain spt ω 2n + 1) q n = f 5 2 f 2 f ) From Jacoi s Identity [6], we have f 1 = spt ω 2n + 1) q n f 10f 2 f 5 mod 5). 4.) 1) n 2n + 1)q n2 +n)/2 f q 10, q 15 ) qf q 5, q 20 ) mod 5). 4.4) Replacing q by q 2 in 4.4) and then substituting the resultant identity in 4.), we obtain spt ω 2n + 1) q n f 10 f 5 f q 20, q 0 ) q 2 f q 10, q 40 ) ) mod 5). 4.5) Comparing the coefficients of q 5n+1 from both sides of 4.5), we arrive at 4.1). Again, on comparing the coefficients of q 5n+ and q 5n+4 from both sides of 4.5), we obtain Theorem 4.2. Andrews et al.[1] ) For all n 0, spt ω 10n + 7) 0 mod 5), 4.6) spt ω 10n + 9) 0 mod 5). 4.7) 5. Congruences for p ω n) and p ν n) In this section, we prove a number of arithmetic properties modulo 2 satisfied by p ω n) and p ν n).

From 2.6), we have Using 2.10), we obtain p ω 4n + 1) q n = f 2 9 f1 6f ) p ω 4n + 1) q n f 9 2 f 2 f 2 4 = f 6 2 f 2 4 f 4 f 2 4 = f 4 mod 2). 5.4) Comparing the coefficients of q 4n+1, from both sides of 5.4), we obtain 5.1). Similarly comparing the coefficients of q 4n+2, from both sides of 5.4), we arrive at 5.2). Again, on comparing the coefficients of q 4n+ from both sides of 5.4), we have p ω 16n + 1) 0 mod 2), 5.5) congruences 5.5) is also true for moduli 4, confirmed by Andrews et al. [2, Th..4]. Theorem 5.2. For all n 0, { 1 mod 2) if n is a pentagonal number, p ω 16n + 1) 0 mod 2) otherwise. 5.6) Proof. Comparing the coefficients of q 4n from both sides of 5.4) and then replacing q 4 by q, we obtain p ω 16n + 1) q n f 1 mod 2). 5.7) Using Euler s Pentagonal Number Theorem [, p. 12], we have p ω 16n + 1) q n k= q kk+1) 2 mod 2). 5.8) Theorem 5.. For all α, n 0, p ω 2 2α+4 n + 14 ) 22α mod 2), 5.9) p ω 2 2α+4 n + 26 ) 22α mod 2). 5.10)
7 PARTITION FUNCTIONS RELATED TO MOCK THETA FUNCTIONS 167 Proof. Equating the coefficients of q 4n+ from both sides of 2.5), we have p ω 4n + )q 4n+ + q ω q 4 ) = 1 2 q F q 4 ), 5.11) which yields p ω 4n 1) 1) n p ω n))q n = 1 2 qf q) = 4q f 4 6 f1 2f ) Thus, for all n 1, From 5.1), we have p ω 4n 1) p ω n) mod 2). 5.1) p ω 16n + 5) 0 mod 2), 5.14) which is the α = 0 case of 5.9). Suppose 5.9) is true for some α 0. Substituting 5.9) in 5.1), we obtain p ω 2 2α+1)+4 n + 14 ) 22α+1) mod 2), 5.15) which is 5.9) with α + 1 for α. This completes the proof of 5.9) by mathematical induction. Note that 5.2) is the α = 0 case of 5.10). Using 5.1) and mathematical induction, we obtain 5.10). Theorem 5.4. For all α, n 0, p ν 2 2α+5 n + 14 ) 22α+1 1 p ν 2 2α+5 n + 26 ) 22α+1 1 Proof. From [5, p.62, Eqn )], we have 0 mod 2), 5.16) 0 mod 2). 5.17) ν q) = qωq 2 ) + q 2 ; q 2 ) q 2 ; q 2 ). 5.18) Using 1.2) in 5.18), we obtain p ν n)q n = qωq 2 ) + q 2 ; q 2 ) q 2 ; q 2 ). 5.19) Extracting the coefficients of q 2n+1 from both sides of 5.19), we obtain p ν 2n 1)q 2n = q 2 ωq 2 ) 5.20) Thus, we have p ν 2n 1) = p ω n). 5.21) Using 5.21) in 5.9) and 5.10), we obtain 5.16) and 5.17). We close this section by briefly noting the following corollaries of Theorem 5.2 and Theorem.2.
8 168 S.N. FATHIMA and UTPAL PORE Corollary 5.5. For all n 0, { 1 mod 2) if n is a pentagonal number, p ν 2n + 1) 0 mod 2) otherwise. 5.22) Proof. This follows from 5.6) and 5.21). Corollary 5.6. For all n 0, p ν 80n + 55) 0 mod 20), 5.2) p ν 80n + 71) 0 mod 20). 5.24) Proof. The above congruences follow from.7),.8) and 5.21). Acknowledgement.
