Relating log-tangent integrals with the Riemann zeta function arxiv:85.683v [math.nt] 7 May 8 Lahoucine Elaissaoui Zine El-Abidine Guennoun May 8, 8 Abstract We show that integrals involving log-tangent function, with respect to certain square-integrable functions on, π/, can be evaluated by some series involving the harmonic number. Then we use this result to establish many closed forms relating to the Riemann zeta function at odd positive integers. In addition, we show that the logtangent integral with respect to the Hurwitz zeta function defines a meromorphic function and that its values depend on the Dirichlet series ζ h s := n s, where = n k. MSC. 4A 4A7 M6 6D5 L3 Introduction The theory of Riemann zeta function is a fascinating topic in number theory with many beautiful results and open questions. The Riemann zeta function is defined by ζs := n s for any complex complex number s in the half-plane Rs > and by analytic continuation on the whole complex plane, except for the simple pole Corresponding author, Mohammed V University in Rabat, Faculty of sciences, Morocco; lahoumaths@gmail.com Mohammed V University in Rabat, Faculty of sciences, Morocco; guennoun@fsr.ac.ma
at s =. The values of ζs at odd positive integers still present a mystery, except for ζ3 which was established in [] to be an irrational number. Moreover, Rivoal [3] and Zudilin [7] showed, respectively, that infinitely many of the numbers ζn+ n =,,... must be irrational, and that at least one of the eight numbers ζn + n =,...,9 must be irrational. In the same direction and in order to study some algebraic properties of the set {ζn+,n N}, the current authors [7] showed recently that these numbers appear, both explicitly and implicitly, in the value of integrals involving log-tangent function. More precisely, we showed that, for any square-integrable function f on, π/, the integral Lf := fxlogtanxdx can be approximated by a finite sum involving the Riemann zeta function at odd positive integers. In particular, for any polynomial P, we have [7, Theorem ] where P π x logtan xdx = c k P = degp+ k π k c kpζk+, P k +P k k+ and where P k x denotes the kth derivative of P at point x. Besides the theory of numbers, integrals involving log-tangent function have various important applications in many different fields of mathematics. In physics, logarithmic-trigonometric integrals also have some applications in the evaluation of classical, semi-classical and quantum entropies of position and momentum, see for example [4]. The purpose of this paper is to show that the integrals involving logtangent function can be evaluated by some series regarding the harmonic number. That is, for certain square-integrable functions f on, π/, we have where Lf = b n f := f,sin4n = 4 π b n f n, fxsin4nxdx n N
and where := n k = H n H n n N. Here, H n := n is the so-called harmonic number. Furthermore, by k combining this result with those obtained in [7], we will be able to express many different sums involving the Riemann zeta-function at odd integer in terms of variant Euler sums, α k h k k, where α k is a real sequence. These mentioned results will appear in Section. It is wortoting that Chen [6] studied the Euler series, when α k is a power sequences, by utilizing the following generating function h k k xk = +x 4 log x <. 3 x In Section 3, we provide a general study of the Dirichlet series ζ h s, or the h-zeta function, defined by ζ h s := n s Rs >. Finally, we conclude the paper with a brief discussion of the corresponding results and remarks. Recursive formulas involving zeta numbers Itiswell knownthatthefouriersystem { /,cos4nx,sin4nx } forms an orthonormal basis for the Hilbert space L [,π/] with respect to the inner product f,g = 4 π fxgxdx [ f,g L, π ]. It follows that any square-integrable function f on [, π/] can be expressed as the Fourier series fx = a f+ a n fcos4nx+ b n fsin4nx, 4 3
where a f := f,/, a n f := f,cos4n and b n f := f,sin4n. Let [ H odd := {f L, π ] π } : f x = fx almost everywhere and H even := [ {f L, π ] π } : f x = fx almost everywhere. It is not hard to check that H even is the orthogonal complement subspace of the closed subspace H odd in L [,π/] and that the system {sin4nx} forms an orthonormal basis for H odd. Recall that, for any square-integrable function f on, π/, Lf := fx logtan xdx. The function x logtanx belongs to H odd and the operator L is a linear functional on L [,π/], so we have [ L L, π ] = LH odd = R. Therefore, it suffices to study the linear functional L on the Hilbert space H odd. Clearly, if f H odd, then the Fourier expansion of f is reduced to It follows immediately that for any f H odd. fx = Lf = b n fsin4nx. b n flsin4n Lemma.. For any positive integer n, we have sin4nxlogtanxdx = n. 4
Proof. By using the Fourier expansion of log-tan function from [3, Th. ], namely and the fact that we have logtanx = k= cosk + x k + cosk+xsin4nxdx = sin4nx logtan xdx = k + k= = n k= = ψ 4n x, π, k ++n, k + n k ++n k + n +n where ψ is the digamma-function defined by ψx := x γ + k x+k k k + n k ++n k + k + n k= +ψ n ψ x > with the Euler-Mascheroni constant γ. Since, for eac N, we have ψ n+ = ψ + and ψ n = ψ +n, it follows that as required. sin4nxlogtanxdx = n, Hence, we are ready to state our main theorem., Theorem.. The equality logtanx = 4 π n sin4nx 5
holds in L [,π/] and, for any f H odd, we have Lf = b n f n, where b n f := f,sin4n. Specializing Theorem. for fx = logtanx, we obtain Lf = log tanxdx = 4 h n π n. We also know that Therefore, we must have log tanxdx = π3 8. h n n = π4 3. Note that this last formula can also be obtained by applying Parseval s identity. Now let / if x < π/4, fx = / if π/4 < x π/, if x = π/4. It is clear that f belongs to H odd, so we have fx = b n fsin4nx = π n n n= sin4nx. By Theorem., we obtain Lf = n π n = + π n+ = G, where G denotes Catalan s constant. From [6, eq. 9 p. 5], we know that n = 7 ζ It now follows that n n = 7 4 ζ3 πg and More generally, we have the following result. 6 n = 7 4 ζ3 π G.
Corollary.3. Let r [,/4]. Then we have rπ logtanxdx = 7 4π ζ3+ π n cos4nrπ. Proof. Let / if x < rπ, f r x = if rπ x / rπ, / if / rπ < x π/. Clearly, f r belongs to H odd. Since, for eac N, we have b n f = 4 π rπ f r xsin4nxdx = 4 sin4nxdx π = cos4nrπ π n it follows from Theorem. and 5 that, Lf r = π n cos4nrπ = π n π n cos4nrπ = 7 4π ζ3 π n cos4nrπ. Finally, the fact that Lf r = r logtan xdx [ r, ] 4 completes the proof of Corollary.3. We should mention that Bradley [3] studied the transformation Tr := rπ logtan xdx, 7
for all r [,/]. He showed that T r = Tr [ r, ], which can also be deduced from our Corollary.3. Moreover, by using the identities listed in [3, p. 7], we can obtain several values of sums of the form k n i cos4nr i π r i for some rational numbers r i [,/4]andfor some integers k i. For example, by using the identity [3, A. 3], we obtain 3 5T = 5T +T, 4 and we can arrive at an alternative representation of the Apéry s constant ζ3 = h n 5cos n π 5cos n 3π + n. 7 n 5 5 Another interesting Euler sum is given in the following corollary. Corollary.4. Let m be a positive integer. Then we have ζ h m = m k+ ζm kζk+, where ζ h s := /n s Rs > and where ζ = /. Proof. From [, eq..3], we know that, for any positive integer m, the m th Bernoulli polynomial can be expanded as B m x = m m! π m sinπnx x <. nm In other words, we have, for all x [,π/, B m π x = m m! π m By applying Theorem., we obtain sin4nx. nm B m π x logtanxdx = m m! π m 8 nm. 6
On the other hand, we find from that B m π x logtanxdx = Note that m B k m = m! m k! B m k, where B m k is the m kth Bernoulli number k Bk πk m ζk+. k+ B m k = m k! m k ζm k, π m k with ζ = /. Now we have B m π x logtanxdx = m m! π m m k+ ζm kζk+. Thus, by combining this last equation with 6, we obtain as required. n m = m k+ ζm kζk+, It is wortoting that Corollary.4 can be rewritten as n m = m+ 4 ζm+ m k+ ζm kζk+ m. It is not hard to see that our Corollary.4 is a generalization of Chen s formula 5. For some historical background of this kind of recursive formulas, it is worth mentioning that Euler [8] proved the following formula m H n n = m+ζm+ ζk+ζm k m, m In addition, Georghiou and Philippou [9] showed that H n n m+ = m k= k ζkζm+ k m N. 9
Another well-known recursive formula for zeta-function at even positive integers is given in [5, p. 67] as n n+ζn = ζkζn k n. For more relevant explicit Euler sums, the reader is advised to see [4, 5]. Next we show another explicit formulation of. Theorem.5. For any polynomial P such that P x = Px, we have P deg P+ π x logtanxdx = 4 k π k Pk ζ h k, where P k x denotes the kth derivative of P at point x. Proof. It is clear, from the functional equation of P, that P is of odd degree, say m m N. Thus, by using integration by parts, it is easy to see that P π x sin4nxdx = π m k nπ k Pk. Since the polynomial P /πx is in H odd, it follows that its expansion is m P π x k = 4 sin4nx nπ k Pk = 4 m k π k Pk Finally, we apply Theorem. to complete the proof. sin4nx n k. We note that another way to prove Theorem.5 is by employing the following fact. Each polynomial P ofdegree m such thatpx = P x can be written as Px = m π m m! m k π k Pk B k x x. Then we apply 6 to prove Theorem.5. Next if we take Px = E m x to be the m th Euler polynomial, we obtain the following inversion formula of Corollary.4.
Corollary.6. For any positive integer m, we have ζm+ = 8 π m+ m ζ h k m k+ ζm k +. Proof. By applying Theorem.5 to the Euler polynomial E m, we obtain E m π x logtanxdx = 4 For each k m, we have m E k m = m! m k +! E m k+ It follows that L E m π = 4m! m k+ π m k+ = 6 m m! π m+ k π k ζ hke k m. ζm k +. m k+ m ζ h k m k+ ζm k+. On the other hand, by see [7, Th. ], we have E m π x logtanxdx = m m! ζm+. π m m+ Combining this equation with7, we complete the proof of Corollary.6. Itiswellknownthatζn = r n π n n N,wherer n = n+ B n n /n! is a rational number. However, no such representation in terms of π is known for the zeta function at odd arguments. It is conjectured that the number ζn+/π n+ is transcendental for every integer n N. In view of Corollary.4 and Corollary.6, we can deduce that the numbers ζn+ and ζ h m, where nand marepositive integers, have the same algebraic properties. This means that if A denotes the set of all algebraic numbers in [,], we have ζn+/π n+ A for all n N if and only if ζ h m/π m+ A for all m N. In addition, if we let α n := ζn+ π n+ and β n := ζ hn π n+ n, 7
then we have, by Corollary.4, β n = n k+ r n k α k n N and, by Corollary.6, α n = 8 n+ n n k+ r n k+ β k n. Furthermore, for any integer n, we have the following recursive formula n 4 n k+ r n k+ β k k+ r n k α k =. Now, by 6 and the fact that ze xz e z = n= B n x zn n! z < π, we have e xz logtanxdx = eπz πz = eπz πz πz n n! n 4 n ζ z n B n π x logtan xdx for all z <. We compare this last equation with [7, p. ] to obtain n n+ ζn+z n = π tanh π z for all z <, Therefore, if we put z = ix/π, we have where Sx := 4 tanx = Sx Cx n 4 n ζ z n. x < π, 8 n+ α n x n and Cx := β n x n.
Note that we can also deduce Corollary.4 and Corollary.6 directly from 8. Clearly, the integral / e xz logtanxdx exists for any complex number z. Moreover, we have e xz logtanxdx = eπz π n + z z C. 9 The case that z = ik k Z is included as z tends to ik; that is, e 4ikx logtanxdx = lim z ik e πz π n + z = ih k k. The proof of 9 is based on the expansion of the function x expxz as in 4; namely, expxz e πz = πz + z π cos4nx n + z π nsin4nx n + z. Then Theorem. helps complete the proof of 9. On the other hand, the authors showed in [7, p. ] that e xz logtanxdx = eπz + 4z = eπz + z +iz iz ψ +ψ ψ +iz ψ ψ i π π tanh z, where ψ is the digamma function. Therefore, we obtain the following identity π ψ z +iz ψ i π π π tanh z = tanh z 3 Analytic continuation of ζ h s n + z. Let s = σ+it σ,t R be a complex number, we define the h-zeta function by ζ h s := n s, 3
where := n /k. Since = log4n/ + γ/ + O/n as n tends to, then ζ h is analytic in the half-plane σ >. On the other hand, it follows from the generating function 3 that, for any real x >, Thus, for all σ >, we have That is, for all σ >, we have n e nx = tanh x 4 log. 4 log tanhxx s dx = 4 = 4 s n e 4nx x s dx x s dx n se x = 4 s ζ h sγs. Since and ζ h s = 4s Γs log tanhxx s dx. log tanhx 4e 4x as x log n n B n tanhx = logx+ x n n n! n = logx+ n r n x n n = log x+4logx w n x n +4 c n x n n= for all x < π, where and where n c n = n w n = n n n r n n N k n k kn k 4 r k r n k, n =,3,...,
it follows that the integral log tanhxx s dx is absolutely convergent for all σ >. Moreover, we have log tanhxx s dx = for all σ >. Therefore, ζ h s = 4s Γs s where 4s s 4 3 Γs Ks := w n s+n +4 w n 4s s+n + Γs log tanhxx s dx. n= n= c n s+n, Since K is a regular function, ζ h s has an analytic continuation to the whole complex plane, except at the pole s = of order and at simple poles s = n n N. Moreover, the residue of ζ h s at s = equals ψ// = log+γ/, where γ := lim n H n logn =.577 denotes the Euler- Mascheroni constant. For each positive integer n, the residue of ζ h s at s = n is equal to w n 4 n n! = B n //4n. Similar to the Riemann zeta function, ζ h s vanishes at the negative even integers. It is interesting to mention that the h-zeta function is closely related to the Hurwitz zeta function. Their first connection is that, for all σ >, ζ h s = ζs, n n. Recall that the Hurwitz zeta function is defined for all σ > and for all x > by ζs,x = n+x s, n= and it can be extended by analytic continuation to the whole complex plane, except at the simple pole s = with residue. Also, it is well known that [6, p. 69], for all σ <, ζs,x = Γ s π s π sin s cosπnx n s 5 π +cos s c n s+n + 4s Γs Ks, sinπnx. n s
Hence, by Theorem., we have, for all σ <, ζ s, π x logtanxdx = Γ s π cos π s s ζ h s. However, the right-hand side of the equality above exists for all σ <. Therefore, for each σ >, we have ζ h s = π s Γs cos πs ζ s, π x logtan xdx. Note that the case when s = n+ n N can be treated as ζ + = n n π n n! ζ n, π x logtan xdx. Note also that can also be shown by applying Theorem. with [, Proposition ]. In fact, for any positive integer n, so we have ζ n, π x logtanxdx = ζ n, π x logtan xdx, ζ n, π x logtanxdx = ζ n, π x ζ n, π x logtan xdx. It now follows from [, Proposition ] and Theorem. that, for odd integers, ζ n, π x logtanxdx = i n n! π n = n n! π n Li n e 4ix logtanxdx h k k n+. It is worth remarking that ζ h s can be extended analytically by using. Indeed, Let z be a complex number such that z. For each < x <, we write ζz,x = x z +ζ z,x. Then it follows from that the integral ζ z, π x logtan xdx 6
exists for all Rz <. From [,.58, eq. 3, p. 53], we have logtanx = logx+ k x k ζk x, π, k π so, by using integration by parts, we obtain, for all Rz <, z π x logtanxdx = π log π z +π z +π ζk k kk + z. However, the right-hand side of the equality above converges absolutely for anycomplexnumber z notequaltooddpositiveintegers i.e. z,3,5,..., and this defines an analytic continuation of the function z z π x logtanxdx. On the other hand, the function ζ z,x is defined on the half-plane Rz > by ζ z,x := It follows that, for all Rz >, n+x = e y y z dy < x <. z Γz e ye xy ζ z, π x logtanxdx = e y y z Γz e y Then, by 9, we obtain for all Rz >, where ζ z, π x logtanxdx = π wy = Γz n + y π. e π xy logtanxdxdy. wye y y z dy Note that the right-hand side integral in is absolutely convergent for all Rz. Consequently, the function Gz := ζ z, π x logtan xdx 7
can be continued analytically to the half-plane Rz, except at the poles z = n n N, by Gz = π z + π log π z + π π Γz ζk k kk + z wye y y z dy. Finally, we can define the h-zeta function on the whole complex plane by { /n s if σ >, ζ h s := s π s sinπs/γ sg s if σ and s n n N. 4 Concluding Remarks The value distribution of the h-zeta function can be an interesting topic to pursue. Besides, it is important to study the algebraic aspects of the numbers ζn+ as we have shown in Corollary.4 and Corollary.6 that the h-zeta function appears in several integrals involving the Riemann zeta-function and the Hurwitz zeta-function. For the sake of completeness, we present the following interesting example. For each σ >, let Hs := Using integration by parts, we find that Hs = 4 s which implies that, for all σ >, logtanhxx s dx. Hs = 4 s Γs ζ e x x s e 4xdx, s,. On the other hand, the analogue of the Parseval s formula for the Mellin transforms see for example [, p. 484] yields Hs ds = log tanhxx σ 3 dx π Rs=σ 8
for all σ >, which is equivalent to 8π Rs=σ s, Γs ζ ds = Γσ ζ h σ for all σ >. In particular, when σ = 3, we have ζ3 = 9 4 costlog 3 7 coshπt ζ +it dt. Wehaveseenthattheh-zetafunctionvanishesats = nn =,,,... and that ζ is closely related to the numbers ζn+ n N. Hence, it is natural to ask if ζ h s satisfies certain functional equation. Maybe, by answering this question, one can find a closed form for the numbers ζn+.
