The Fourier series of the log-barnes function István Mező Department of Mathematics, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, No.29 Ningliu Rd, Pukou, Nanjing, Jiangsu, P. R. China arxiv:64.753v [math.ca] 4 Apr 26 Abstract In this paper we determine the Fourier series expansion of the log-barnes function. This is the analogue of the classical result of Kummer and Malmsten. Applying this expansion we get some integrals similar to the Espinosa-Moll log- Gamma integrals with respect to logg. During the course of the paper some interesting log-gamma integrals and a log-harmonic sum are evaluated. Key words: Barnes G function; Fourier coefficients; log-gamma integrals 99 MSC: 33B5 Raabe s formula and its extensions In 84 J. L. Raabe [26] proved that with the limiting case logγ(x+t)dx = log 2π +tlogt t (t ) Here Γ is the Euler Gamma function Γ(x) = logγ(x)dx = log 2π. () u x e u du (R(x) > ). During the studying of some definite integrals of the Hurwitz zeta function O. Espinosa and V. Moll [2,2] proved an extension of the Raabe formula (): log 2 Γ(x)dx = log 2π = γ2 2 + π γl L2 (γ +2L ) ζ (2) π 2 + ζ (2) 2π 2, address: istvanmezo8@gmail.com (István Mező). 2 where L = logγ(x)dx = log 2π, γ is the Euler constant and ζ is the Riemann zeta function. With this discovery a number of researchers started to look for exact values of the integrals of the powers of the log- Gamma function log Γ. Introducing the notation L n = log n Γ(x)dx, Amdeberhan et al. [4] reproduced the result of Raabe by an elementary argument, and reproved the Espinosa-Moll expression for L 2 using Parseval s identity and Kummer s Fourier series 2 [23, entries , ] or [27, p. 29] logγ(x) = 2 log(2π)+ when < x < and C = log(2π)+γ. In [4] it was also proved that C +logn πn sin(2nπx) + L n n! as n, and the authors called for expressions of L n in general. cos(2nπx) (2) 2n One year later Bailey and his co-authors [7] found an expression for L 3 and L 4 in terms of Tornheim-Witten zeta functions and its derivatives. They remarked that in principle their approach might be used to find L n in general. In our paper we would like to study analogous questions with respect to the Barnes G function, which is a higher order analogue of the Gamma function. 2 The Barnes G function The Barnes G function is defined by the functional equation G(z +) = Γ(z)G(z) (z C\{,, 2,...}) (3) with the normalization G() =. The origin of the Barnes function is in the works of Barnes [8,9,]. Later he defined a sequence of functions (the multiple gammas) as higher order analogues of the Γ and G functions []. However, before the papers of Barnes, Kinkelin [24] defined a function similar to G and applied it to evaluate some log-trigonometric integrals. The G function has applications in the theory of infinite sums involving the zeta function [7,8], in the theory of the Polygamma [,22], in the evaluation of Laplacians [28] and 2 I. Blagouchine [3] discovered that this expansion was known 5 years before Kummer by Malmsten and his colleagues. 2
in the evaluation of several integrals containing Gamma function [8]. The asymptotic behavior of G was discussed by C.-P. Chen [6], the asymptotics of logg is contained in [29], and other computational aspects were studied by Adamchik [2]. Additional applications are mentioned in [3]. A good resource with many important properties of G and logg is the book of Srivastava and Choi [27]. Citations to applications can also be found in this book on p. 38. The purpose of this paper is threefold: we study the integral G 2 = log 2 G(x)dx, find the Fourier expansion of logg and find the asymptotics of G n in general, where G n = log n G(x)dx (n ). 3 The Fourier series of xlogγ(x) and logg(x) D. Connon [9] and before Koyama and Kurokawa [25, Theorem ] found a Fourier-like expansion of logg as logg(x) = ζ ( ) 4π 2π 2 n sin(2nπx)+ ( C 3 ) cos(2nπx)+ (4) 2 2π 2 2 n2 logn n 2 cos(2nπx)+ 4 B 2(x)+(x )logγ(x), where B 2 (x) = x 2 x + is the second Bernoulli polynomial and, as before, C = 6 log(2π) + γ. (We must note that The Koyama-Kurokawa Fourier series was expressed for the second multiple Gamma function Γ 2.) One can then deduce the pure Fourier representation of log G by considering this expansion for xlogγ(x). This is not entirely elementary, so we now deduce the Fourier series of xlogγ(x). To fix the notation we consider the Fourier coefficients of a function f(x) as a n = 2 b n = 2 f(x)cos(2nπx)dx (n ), f(x)sin(2nπx)dx (n ). Then f(x) = 2 a + a n cos(2nπx)+ b n sin(2nπx) ( < x < ). The generalization of Parseval s identity will be important to us. This states [2, p. 343] that if (a n,b n ) and (α n,β n ) are the Fourier coefficients of f and g, respectively, then 2 f(x)g(x)dx = 2 a α + (a n α n +b n β n ). (5) 3
One more ingredient we will need in the course of the proof, which is the following easily provable lemma. Lemma The series identities m=, m n m 2 n = 3 (n ), 2 4n 2 hold true. Here m=, m n m(m 2 n 2 ) = 5 4n H n (n ) 3 n 2 is the nth harmonic number. H n = n Having these tools we are going to present the Fourier series of xlogγ(x). Theorem 2 For any < x < where with Here xlogγ(x) = a 2 + a n cos(2nπx)+ b n sin(2nπx), a = ( ) 2π 2 log, A 4 a n = 4n C π 2 n 2 logn 4π 2 n 2 π 2T n (n ), b n = γ +log(n) H n 2πn is the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant. Proof. By definition, T n = i=2 (i n) A = e /2 ζ ( ) + 2πn 2 (n ) a n = 2 xlogγ(x)cos(2nπx)dx (n ). log(i) i 2 n2. (6) Todeterminea n wecanapply(5)withg n (x) = xcos(2nπx)andf(x) = logγ(x).sincethe Fourier coefficients of logγ(x) are known by (2), we can concentrate on the (α n,m,β n,m ) Fourier coefficients of g n (x). It is not hard to see that α, =, α n,n = 2 (n ), and the other α s are zero. Moreover, β m,m = 4πm (m > ), β n,m = m (n m). π(n 2 m 2 ) 4
Thus, by (5) a = xlogγ(x)dx = 2 log(2π)+ m= 2 log(2π) π 2 ( 2m m= + B +logm πm A+logm m 2. ) m = π( 2 m 2 ) The sum on m equals to Aπ 2 /6 ζ (2). The derivative of zeta at x = 2 can be expressed by ζ ( ) using the functional equation of ζ. Thus We continue with a n : a n = m=, m n ( 2m + C +logm πm a = ( ) 2π 2 log. A 4 4n C +logn 4π 2 n 2 π 2 ) m + π(n 2 m 2 ) m=, m n ( 2m C +logm m 2 n C +logn ) = πn 4πn Simplifying this expression by using Lemma, and after defining T n as above, we arrive at the expression for a n presented in the statement. The expression for b n can be given by considering the (α n,m,β n,m ) Fourier expression of xsin(2nπx) together with the second statement of. The details are left to the reader. The pure Fourier expansion of the log-barnes function now follows. Theorem 3 For any < x < where with T n is as in (6). logg(x) = a + a n cos(2nπx)+ b n sin(2nπx), a = 2 2log(A) 4 log(2π), a n = ( ) logn C 2π 2 n 2 2 4n T n (n ), π 2 b n = ( ) 2πn 2n γ log(4π2 n) H n (n ) Proof. Theorem 2 and Connon s formula (4) directly gives the statement if we apply the expansion [5, p. 338] B 2 (x) = cos(2nπx). π 2 n 2 5
4 The integral G 2 It was known even by Barnes that G = See [27] for the details on G. Our aim is to find logg(x)dx = 2 4 log(2π) 2logA. G 2 = log 2 G(x)dx. In principle, to find G 2 we could use Parseval s identity together with Theorem 3 but there are so many terms under the square that this work would be very long. Instead, we will use the trivial identity log 2 G(x) = 4 and determine the integrals ( log 2 G(x)G( x)+log 2 ) G(x), (7) G( x) log 2 G(x)G( x)dx, and log 2 G(x) G( x) dx which are interesting in themselves. In the evaluation of these integrals three quantities appear which we could not trace back to more elementary expressions. These are the following. Here ζ H (2) = U = V = n=2 Z(t) = H n logn n , Z 2 (t)dt , ζ(2n+) n+ E 2n ζ(2n+) n+ t2n+2 ( t < ), while E n is defined in (9). The notation ζ H(2) will be explained later in a separate subsection. The Clausen function is an odd function with /n 2 sine-coefficients. During the course of the below proof we shall need the Fourier coefficients of xcl 2 (x), where Cl 2 (x) = sin(nx) n 2 is the Clausen function. The following lemma contains this information. (The proof is omitted.) 6
Lemma 4 The Fourier-cosine coefficients of xcl 2 (2πx) are a = ζ(3) π, a n = ( Hn π n 3 ) 2 2n 3 (n > ). We now evaluate the following log-barnes integrals. Theorem 5 We have that π 2ζ H log 2 G(x) G( x) dx = 2logC(γ +2log(2π))+ ζ (2) 2π 2 + ζ (3) 2π 2 + (8) (2)+ 3ζ(3) π 2 ( γ 2 +log(2π) )+ 3π2 72 γ2 2 γ 6 (log2 log(π)), and log 2 G(x)G( x)dx = L (γ +)2 +2(γ +)E 2 + γ + 27 (44logA 8γ 44ζ ( 3) 57)+U +V. Proof. We start with the evaluation of the first integral, and we use formula (4.5) of [8] which states that log G(+x) G( x) = xlog sin(πx) π 2π Cl 2(2πx). By the basic recursion (3) we can easily get the following expression log 2 G(x) G( x) = log2 Γ(x)+x 2 log 2 sin(πx) + sin(πx) π 4π 2Cl2 2 (2πx)+2xlogΓ(x)log + π π logγ(x)cl 2(2πx)+ x π Integrating on x [,] we have that log 2 sin(πx) log Cl 2 (2πx). π G(x) G( x) dx = I + +I 6. We evaluate these six integrals one by one. The first we already know: The second integral is I = L 2. I 2 = x 2 log 2 sin(πx) dx = π 3 log2 π + x 2 log 2 (sin(πx))dx 2logπ x 2 log(sin(πx))dx. The appearing two integrals are not elementary either; the first after an integral transformation can be evaluated by a result of Borwein and Straub [5, Example 5.]: x 2 log 2 (sin(πx))dx = 3π log2 (2)+ π 2 log(2)ζ(3), 7
while the second one can be found in [2, (5.7)]: Hence x 2 log(sin(πx))dx = 3 log2 ζ(3) 2π 2. I 2 = 3π log2 (2π)+ π 2 log(2π)ζ(3). The value of I 3 can be given by Parseval s identity: I 3 = Cl 2 π2 4π 2 2 (2πx)dx = 72. In the integral I 4 appears the sum of special interest we denoted by ζ H (2). 2 2logπ I 4 = 2 xlogγ(x)log sin(πx) dx = π xlogγ(x)logsin(πx)dx 2logπ ( ζ (2) 2π log(2π) γ 2 ) xlogγ(x)dx = +2 x log Γ(x) log sin(πx)dx. Here the exact value of E = xlogγ(x)dx was used [2]. In the literature [2, Example 7.3] we could find logγ(x)logsin(πx)dx = 2 log2log(2π) π2 24, but not x log Γ(x) log sin(πx)dx, what we would need. Fortunately the generalized Parseval identity (5) combined with Theorem 2 helps. Recalling that for log sin(πx) the Fourier sine-coefficients are all zero, and the cosine-coefficients are a = log2, a n = 2n (n > ), we have that xlogγ(x)logsin(πx)dx = ( 2π ) 4 log2log π2 A Cζ(3) + (3)+ 2π 2 2π 2ζ 2π 2 where we used Lemma. Hence H n logn n 2, I 4 = π2 π 2ζ H (2) 24 ( ) 2π 2 log(2π)log + γζ(3) + ζ (3) A 4 π 2 π 2ζ(3)log(2π)+ π. 2 In the determination of I 5 there is no additional difficulty: I 5 = π logγ(x)cl 2 (2πx)dx = 2π 2(Cζ(3) ζ (3)). 8
Lemma 4 helps us to find I 6 = x π sin(πx) log Cl 2 (2πx)dx = ζ(3)log(2π) + π2 π 2π The expression under (8) is now can be completed by adding the six integrals and making the possible simplifications. The second statement of the theorem can be established via the expression [8, eq. (5.5)] log(g(x+)g( x)) = (γ +)x 2 Z(x). Then using that log(g(x + )G( x)) = logγ(x) + log(g(x)g( x)), squaring and calculating the resulting integrals one by one, it is possible to prove the second statement of the theorem. One sum arises in the integral of x 2 Z(x), and this is x 2 Z(x)dx = ζ(2n+) (n+)(2n+5) = 54 (44logA 44ζ (3) 8γ 57), as one can deduce from [7, p. 55, (2.4)]. Now employing (7) we arrive at our main achievement, the wanted expression for G 2. Theorem 6 We have that ( 4G 2 = loga ) 3 γ +6log(2π) + ζ (2) 6 π 2 3 ζ ( 3)(+γ)+ ζ (3) 2π + ( 2 π 2ζ(3) 2γ + )+ 2 +3logπ +3log2 7π 2 8 γ2 3 57γ log2 (2π)+ 3 log(2π)+u +V + ζ H (2). π 2 That there are some unidentified constants in the expression of G 2 shows the probable complexity of this quantity. 5 Some additional remarks 5. The harmonic zeta function In the evaluation of G 2 the sum ζ H(2) = n=2 H n logn n 2 appeared. The harmonic zeta function, studied first by Apostol and Vu [6], is defined as ζ H (s) = H n n s (R(s) > ). 9
(Actually, they defined a more general function having the generalized harmonic numbers in the nominator). Hence the notation ζ H (2) already can be understood (apart, of course, from the minus sign left out for the sake of simplicity). Apostol and Vu considered the analytic extension of the ζ H function to the whole complex plane, minus discrete singularities described entirely in the paper. No functional equation for this kind of Dirichlet function is known, however, this would be necessary to find a closed form of ζ H (2) (in terms of zeta function values). This sum appears probably very few times in the mathematical literature. Nevertheless, we could find an expression for it which involves the log-gamma function: n=2 H n logn n 2 = π2 6 ( ) π 2 8 γ2 2 +log2 (2π) +π 2 γlog ζ (3)+ 2 ζ (2) 2π 2 xlog 2 Γ(x)dx, ( A 2 6 2π ) Cζ(3) where, as everywhere in the paper, C = log(2π) + γ, and A is the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant. The proof can be established by using the generalized Parseval identity with f(x) = xlogγ(x) and g(x) = logγ(x). 5.2 An integral of e x logγ(x) Before going forward to the evaluation of G 2 we remark some corollaries of our results. Considering the Fourier coefficients a and b of xlogγ(x) we can see that xlogγ(x)sin(2πx)dx = γ 4π. xlogγ(x)cos(2πx)dx = 8 C 2π 2 2π 2 logn n 2. During our work we have found another integral evaluation: 2 ( ( ( ( )) i e x logγ(x)dx = C 3 coth +R ψ e 2)) 2π 4 logn +4n 2 π 2, where ψ = Γ is the Digamma function [23,27]. The proof of this integral can be established by the Fourier expansion of e x together with (5). We note Γ that E n = x n logγ(x)dx (9) can be evaluated for any n via zeta values [2]. However, we cannot get our above integral by dividing E n with n! and summing over n because of the complex structure of the expression for E n.
5.3 The asymptotics of G n We mentioned in the first section that Amdeberhan and his coworkers [4] made the observation L n n!. Their approach (considering the Taylor expansion of logγ(x) around x = ) can be used to present the asymptotics of G n. Theorem 7 We have that asymptotically G n ( ) n n!. It is worth to note that in [4] a finer description is given for L n /n!, namely, L n n! i= ( ) i+ c i i n as n. Here the coefficients c i can be determined. It would be interesting to find a similar asymptotic expansion for ( ) n G n /n!. Acknowledgement The author is grateful to Mr. Donal Connon for his valuable comments and discussions on my work.
