Holds Top Spot in the Final Winter Division III Learfield Sports Directors Cup Standings CLEVELAND Williams holds the lead after the final winter Division III Learfield Sports Directors Cup Standings with total points. The Ephs scored a winter-high of points after placing second in men s basketball, third in women s swimming, ninth in women s basketball and men s swimming, 12 th in men s track and field and National Collegiate (NC) skiing, 18 th in women s track and field and 23 rd in wrestling. Amherst (Mass.) returns to the top-five with points, including points scored this winter. The Lord Jeffs captured the women s ice hockey championship and had four other top-10 finishes women s basketball (third), men s swimming (fifth), women s swimming (sixth) and women s track and field (seventh). They also finished 40 th in men s track and field. Washington University (Mo.) moves up to third after tallying a total of points. The Bears recorded winter points after claiming the women s basketball title and recording points in men s basketball, men s and women s swimming and women s track and field. In fourth place with points is Wisconsin Stevens Point. The Pointers jumped from 21 st since the last standings after winning the men s basketball championship and placing fifth in the women s basketball tournament. They also finished strong in men s and women s swimming, men s and women s track and field and wrestling, giving them a total of winter points Rounding out the top five is Middlebury (Vt.) with 512 total points, including points this winter. The Panthers ranked fifth in men s ice hockey, seventh in men s swimming, 10 th in NC skiing, 17 th in men s basketball, 18 th in women s swimming and 55 th in men s track and field. The nine winter Division III championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: Washington University (Mo.) (women s basketball), Wisconsin Stevens Point (men s basketball), Kenyon (Ohio) (men s swimming), Emory (Ga.) (women s swimming), Norwich (Vt.) (men s ice hockey), Amherst (women s ice hockey), North Central (Ill.) (women s track and field), Wartburg (Iowa) (men s track and field) and Augsburg (Minn.) (wrestling). Clarkson and Middlebury had the highest finishes for Division III institutions in the NC sports of women s ice hockey (eighth) and skiing (10 th ), respectively. The Learfield Sports Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women s and nine men s. The first Division III spring standings will be released Thursday, May 27, Please note, standings published midseason are unofficial. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season.
