Leads Final Fall Division III Learfield Sports Directors Cup Standings; NESCAC Places Three Institutions in the Top Ten CLEVELAND Washington University (Mo.) is in first place with 372 points in the final set of fall standings of the Division III Learfield Sports Directors Cup. The Bears earned their spot atop the standings by scoring in five of the seven fall championships. They finished first in women s cross country, third in men s cross country, fifth in women s soccer, ninth in volleyball and 17 th in men s soccer. Middlebury (VT.) is in second place with 359 points. Middlebury placed second in both women s cross country and field hockey, ninth in women s soccer and volleyball and 13 th in men s cross country. In third place with 264 points is Amherst (Mass.). The Lord Jeffs finished in fifth place in field hockey and women s soccer, ninth in men s soccer and 11 th in women s cross country. The Knights from Calvin (Mich.) sit in fourth place with 262 total points. Calvin finished second in men s soccer, ninth in volleyball, 11 th in men s cross country and 13 th in women s cross country. Salisbury (Md.) rounds out the top five with 240 points, finishing fifth in field hockey and football, 17 th in women s volleyball and 33 rd in both men s and women s soccer. The New England Small College Athletic Conference is leading the way with three of its institutions still in the top 10. Following second place Middlebury (Vt.) is Amherst (Mass.) in third and Williams (Mass.) in sixth. To date, all seven fall NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: women s soccer - Messiah (Pa.); men s soccer - Ohio Wesleyan; volleyball - Wittenberg (Ohio); women s cross country - Washington (Mo.); men s cross country - North Central (Il.); field hockey - The College of New Jersey; football - Wisconsin Whitewater. The Learfield Sports Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women s and nine men s.
