1 COMPLETE MONOTONICITY OF FUNCTIONS INVOLVING THE q-trigamma AND q-tetragamma FUNCTIONS arxiv: v math.ca 1 Sep 013 FENG QI Abstract. Let ψ qx) for q > 0 stand for the q-digamma function. In the paper, the author proves that the functions ψ p x) + ψ p x) for p > 1 and ψ q x) lnq q x) for 0 < q < 1 are completely monotonic with respect to x 0, ). Applying these results, the author further establishes monotonic properties of four functions involving the q-digamma function ψ qx) and two double inequalities for bounding the q-digamma function ψ qx). 1. Introduction Recall from 1, Chapter XIII that a function f is said to be completely monotonic on an interval I if f has derivatives of all orders on I and 0 1) n f n) x) < 1.1) for x I and n 0. For more information about properties and applications of completely monotonic functions, please refer to 1, Chapter XIII and closely related references therein. It is common knowledge that the logarithmic derivative of the classical Euler s gamma function Γx), denoted by ψx) = Γ x) Γx), the derivatives ψ x) and ψ x) are called the digamma, trigamma and tetragamma functions respectively. As a whole, the derivatives ψ i) x) for i N are respectively called polygamma functions. Recall from, pp that the q-gamma function, the q-analogue of the gamma function Γx), is defined for x > 0 by 1 q) 1 x 1 q i+1 i=0 1 q i+x, 0 < q < 1 Γ q x) = q 1) 1 x q ) 1 q i+1) x i=0 1 q i+x), q > 1 1.) Γx), q = 1 and satisfies Γ q x) = q x 1 ) Γ1/q x). 1.3) The q-digamma function ψ q x), the q-analogue of the digamma function ψx), is defined for q > 0 and x > 0 by Γ q x) ψ q x) = Γ q x), q 1, 1.4) ψx), q = 1. The functions ψ q k) x) for k N, the q-analogues of polygamma functions ψ k) x), are called q-polygamma functions. In particular, the functions ψ qx) and ψ qx) are called the q-trigamma and q-tetragamma functions. 010 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 33D05; Secondary 6A1, 6A48, 6D07, 33B15. 2 F. QI From 1.), we obtain for x 0, ) that, when 0 < q < 1, q k+x ψ q x) = ln1 q)+lnq) 1 q k+x = ln1 q)+lnq) q kx 1 qk, 1.5) and that, when q > 1, k=0 ψ q x) = lnq 1)+lnq) x 1 i=1 k=1 q ix 1 q i. 1.6) The inequality ψ x) x) > 0, x > 0 1.7) was deduced or recovered in 3, Theorem.1 and 5, Lemma 1.1, employed in 1, Theorem 4.3, 3, Theorem.1, and 5, Theorem.1, and generalized in 4, Lemma 1. and Remark 1.3. In 7, 14, 15, among other things, the inequality 1.7) was generalized to complete monotonicity of the function ψ x) x). Recently, some other results in this field were published in 13, 16 and closely related references therein. In 1, pp , Lemma 4.6, the inequality 1.7) was generalized as ψ q x) q x) > 0 1.8) for q > 1 and x > 0. Applying this inequality, the following conclusion was established in 1, p. 8, Theorem 4.8: For q > 1 and 0 < a < b, we have exp { α e ψqx) ψ q x) 1 ) +1 } Γ qx) Γ q x 0 ) exp{ β e ψqx) ψ q x) 1 ) +1 } on a, b), with the best possible constant factors { Q q b), if b < α = 0, if b = and β = Q q a), where x 0 = x 0 q) is the unique positive zero of the function ψ q for 0 < q 1, and lnγ q x) lnγ q x 0 ) ψ Q q x) = q x) 1e ψqx) +1, x x 0, 1 ψ q x 0), x = x 0. For more information on the subject of q-gamma and q-polygamma functions, please refer to, 8, 10 and closely related references therein. The first aim of this paper is to extend and generalize the inequality 1.8) to complete monotonicity below. Theorem 1.1. The functions ψ q x) qx) 1.9) for q > 1 and ψ qx) lnq qx) 1.10) for 0 < q < 1 are completely monotonic with respect to x 0, ). The second aim is to, by Theorem 1.1, find monotonicity and inequalities below. Theorem 1.. The functions φ q x) = ψ q x)+ln, q > 1, 1.11) ϕ q x) = ψ q x)+ln exp lnq ), q > 1, 1.1)

Consequently, the double inequalities ψ q 1)+lnq)x ln < ψ q x) < ln lnq exp q 1 +lnq)x ln lnq)qx for 0 < q < 1 and ψ q 1) lnq ln exp lnq ) < ψ q x) < ln lnq q 1 lnq ln exp lnq ) 1.15) 1.16) for q > 1 hold on 0, ), where the constants ψ q 1) and ln lnq q 1) in 1.15) and the scalars ψ q 1) lnq and ln lnq q 1 lnq in 1.16) are the best possible.. Proof of Theorem For q > 1, using the expression 1.6) gives ψ q x) q x) lnq) = 1+ c j q,x)c i j q,x) i )c i q,x),.1) where i= c i q,x) = ilnq 1 q iq ix > 0. In order to prove complete monotonicity of the function 1.9), by definition, it suffices to show { 1) k dk ψ q x) } qx) k lnq) 0, k 0..) For k = 0, the inequality.) is equivalent to 1.8). For k 1, it is equivalent to 1) k i= k c j q,x)c i j q,x) x k 1) k In order to prove.3), it is sufficient to verify that is, 1) k 1) k k c j q,x)c i j q,x) x k 1) k+1 i k ji j)lnq) k+ q i1 x)+j q j 1)q j q i ) i=1 i=1 i ) k c i q,x) x k..3) 1) k i ) k c i q,x) x k, i 3, 1) k i ) 1)k+1 i k+1 lnq) k+1 q i1 x) 1 q i, i 3,

Thus, the inequality.3) is proved. Hence, the function 1.9) is completely monotonic for q > 1 on 0, )... For 0 < q < 1, taking the logarithm and differentiating on both sides of 1.3) reveal ψ q x) = lnq) x 3 ) 1/q x),.7) ψ q x) = lnq 1/q x),.8) q x) = ψ k) x), k..9) ψ k) Therefore, when 0 < q < 1, we have ψ 1/q x) 1/q x) = ψ qx) lnq qx) 1/q on 0, ). As a result, the function 1.10) is completely monotonic for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ). The proof of Theorem 1.1 is complete. 3. Proof of Theorem In 8, p. 145, Theorem 4.4, it was deduced for k N that ) ψ q k 1) x+1) ψ q k 1) x) = lnq) dk 1 q x k 1 1 q x, 0 < q < ) Substituting.8) and.9) into 3.1), we easily procure that ) ψ k 1) 1/q x+1) ψ k 1) 1/q x) = lnq) dk 1 q x k 1 1 q x
5 COMPLETE MONOTONICITY OF q-polygamma FUNCTIONS 5 for 0 < q < 1, k, and x > 0. Replacing q by 1 q ψ k 1) q x+1) ψ q k 1) x) = lnq) dk 1 k 1 Similarly, combining.7) with 3.1), we obtain 1 q x 1 in the above identity leads to ), q > 1, k. 3.) ψ q x+1) ψ q x) = lnq)qx q x, q > 1, x > ) 1 For 0 < q 1, we have expφ q x) = expψ q x) = exp ψ q x)+ lnq)qx q x expψ q x) = expψ q x+1) expψ q x), 1 where the last equality is obtained by 3.1) and 3.3). Further differentiating gives dexpφ q x) = ψ q x+1)expψ qx+1) ψ q x)expψ qx), d{ψ qx)expψ q x)} = { ψ q x) q x)} expψ q x). Complete monotonicity of the function 1.9) in Theorem 1.1 implies the positivity of the function 1.9) for q > 1 on 0, ), that is, the inequality 1.8). Hence, the function ψ qx)expψ q x) is increasing, and so dexpφqx) > 0 for q > 1 on 0, ). As a result, the function expφ q x), and thus φ q x), is increasing for q > 1 on 0, ). For 0 < q 1, we also have expφ q x) = expψ q x) lnq)x = exp ψ q x)+ lnq)qx q x 1 lnq)x expψ q x) lnq)x = expψ q x+1) lnq)x expψ q x) lnq)x, where the last equality is deduced by using 3.1) and 3.3). Further computation gives and dexpφ q x) = ψ q x+1) lnqexpψ qx+1) lnq)x ψ q x) lnqexpψ qx) lnq)x d{ψ q x) lnqexpψ qx) lnq)x} = { ψ qx) qx) lnq } expψ q x) lnq)x. Complete monotonicity of the function 1.10) in Theorem 1.1 implies the positivity of the function 1.10) for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ). Hence, the function {ψ qx) lnqexpψ q x) lnq)x} is increasing, and so dexpφqx) > 0 for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ). As a result, the function expφ q x), and thus Φ q x), is increasing for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ). For 0 < q < 1, utilizing.7) yields Φ q x) = lnq) x 3 ) 1/q x) lnq)x+ln
6 6 F. QI = ψ 1/q x)+ln 3 lnq = ψ 1/q x)+ln exp ln1/q) 1/q) x ln 1 q. Replacing 1 q by q in the above equation leads to increasing monotonicity of the function ϕ q x) for q > 1 on 0, ). For q > 1, employing.7) gives φ q x) = ψ 1/q x) ln 1 ) x 3 ) +ln q = ψ 1/q x) ln 1 ) x+ln exp ln1/q) q 1/q) x ln 1 q. Substituting 1 q by q in the above equation reduces to increasing monotonicity of the function Θ q x) for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ). 3.. From 1.5), it is easy to see that In addition, for q 0,1), we have { } lim ln x lnq)x lim ψ qx) = ln1 q), q 0,1). 3.4) x = lim x ln exp lnq)q x q x = ln ln 1 ). q Combining them with increasing monotonicity of Φ q x), we acquire ψ q x) lnq)x+ln < ln ln 1 ) ) lnq ln1 q) = ln q q 1 for q 0,1) on 0, ), which is equivalent to the right-hand side of 1.15). From 3.1) for k = 1 and the limit for 0 < q < 1, it follows that ψ q x)+ln lim x 0 + ψ q x) = 3.5) = lnexpψ q x)+ln } { = ln expψ q x) { } lnq)q x = ln exp q x 1 qx) expψ q x) = ln { exp ψ q x+1) expψ q x) } ψ q 1) 3.6) as x 0 +, so the limit lim x 0 + Φ q x) = ψ q 1) for 0 < q < 1. Combining this with increasing monotonicity of Φ q x), we acquire Φ q x) > ψ q 1) for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ), that is, ψ q x) lnq)x+ln > ψ q 1), 0 < q < 1, x 0, ). The required inequality in the left-hand side of 1.15) is proved. For 0 < q < 1, by using 3.1) for k = 1, we have Θ q x) = ψ q x)+ lnq)qx q x 1 lnq)qx q x 1 lnq)x+ln exp lnq ) = ψ q x+1)+ln explnq/qx 1) 1 q x explnq)q x /q x 1) ψ q1) lnq 3.7)
7 COMPLETE MONOTONICITY OF q-polygamma FUNCTIONS 7 as x 0 +. Since Θ q x) is increasing on 0, ), we obtain that ψ q x) lnq)x+ln exp lnq ) > ψ q 1) lnq for 0 < q < 1 on 0, ), which is included in the left-hand side of 1.15). For q > 1, by a similar argument as in 3.7), we have ϕ q x) = ψ q x+1)+ln explnq/qx 1) 1 explnq)q x /q x 1) ψ q1) lnq as x 0 +. Furthermore, from.7) and 3.4), it follows that ϕ q x) = ψ 1/q x)+lnq) x 3 ) +ln as x. Hence, we have exp lnq = ψ 1/q x) 3lnq +ln q x ln 1 1 q ) exp lnq ψ q 1) lnq < ϕ q x) < ln lnq q 1 lnq ) ) 3lnq +lnlnq) = ln lnq q 1 lnq for q > 1 on 0, ). The required double inequality 1.16) is proved. For q > 1, the limits 3.5) and 3.6) are still valid, then lim x 0 + φ q x) = ψ q 1) for q > 1, and so φ q x) > ψ q 1) which is contained in the left-hand side of 1.16). The proof of Theorem 1. is complete. 4. Remarks Finally we remark some closely related concerns. Remark 4.1. It is easy to see that lim φ qx) = lim ϕ q x) = lim Φ q x) = lim Θ q x) = ψx)+ln e 1/x 1 ). 4.1) q 1 q 1 q 1 q 1 It is known that the function 4.1) is increasing and concave on 0, ) and that a ln e 1/x 1 ) < ψx) < b ln e 1/x 1 ) 4.) if and only if a γ and b 0, where γ = stands for Euler-Mascheroni s constant. See 9, 11 and closely related references therein. The inequality 4.) may also be derived from taking the limit q 1 in 1.15) or 1.16). We conjecture that the functions φ q x), ϕ q x), Φ q x), and Θ q x) should be concave on 0, ). Remark 4.. From the proof of Theorem 1., it may be obtained that the functions ψ q x)eψqx) for q 1 and ψ q x) lnqeψqx) lnq)x for 0 < q 1 are increasing with respect to x 0, ). In 5, Lemma 1. and 6, pp. 41 4, it was obtained that the function ψ x)e ψx) is increasing and less than 1 on 0, ). Can one find bounds for the above two functions? Acknowledgements.
