Int. Journal of Math. Analysis, Vol. 4, 2010, no. 21, A New Proof of Inequalities for Gauss Compound Mean Zhen-hang Yang Electric Grid Planning and Research Center Zhejiang Province Electric Power Test and Research Institute Hangzhou, Zhejiang, P. R. China, yzhkm@163.com Abstract. In this short note, by structuring an auxiliary function and using known identity and inequalities, a new, elementary and succinct proof of inequalities for Gauss compound mean is given. Lastly, two open problems are posed. Mathematics Subject Classification: 26D07, 26E60 Keywords: Gauss compound mean, Logarithmic mean, inequality 1. Introduction The well-known Gauss compound mean of positive numbers a, b > 0 with a b is the limit AGM(a, b) = lim a n = lim b n, n n where a 1 = a, b 1 = b, and for n N, a b a n+1 = A(a n,b n )= a n + b n (1.1),b n+1 = G(a n,b n )= a n b n. 2 For a mean value M, the t-modification is defined as M t (a, b) :=M 1/t (a t,b t ). For example, the power mean of a, b > 0 with a b defined by ( ) a t + b t 1/t A t (a, b) = if t 0,A 0 (a, b) = ab 2 is the t-modification of the arithmetic mean A(a, b); the t-order logarithmic mean defined by ( ) b t a t 1/t (1.2) L t (a, b) = if t 0,L 0 (a, b) = ab t(ln b ln a)
1014 Zhen-hang Yang is the t-modification of the logarithmic mean L(a, b) defined by (1.3) L(a, b) = b a ln b ln a. The connection between mean values and elliptic integrals is provided by Gauss s amazing result where AGM(1,r )= K(r) = π 2 F (1/2, 1/2; 1; r2 )= π 2K(r), π/2 0 (1 r 2 sin 2 x) 1/2 dx, r = 1 r 2 (0 r 1) [2]. This formula motivates the question of finding minorant/majorant functions for K(r) in terms of mean values. For a fixed x > 0 the function t L t (1,x),t > 0 increases with t by [10, Theorem 1.2 (1)]. The two-sided inequalities (1.4) L(a, b) < AGM(a, b) <L 2/3 (a 3/2,b 3/2 ). hold; the first inequality was pointed out by B. C. Carlson and M. Vuorinen [5] and was proved again by E. Neuman and J. Sándor [7], and the second one, due to J. and P. Borwein [3], proves a sharp estimate settling a question raised in connection with [10]. Combined with identity above, this inequality yields a very precise inequality for K(r). In addition, M. K. Vamanamurthy presented two open problems [10], one of them is: Is it true that AGM t (a, b) L(a, b) for some t (0, 1)? Two proofs of the first inequality of (1.4) were given in [5] and [7], which are not complicated, but the latter is more ingenious. By the way, J. M. Borwein and P. B. Borwein also gave a proof (see [3, Theorem 2.4 (iii)]), unfortunately, which is wrong. The proof of the second one given in [3] is complicated and not easy to read, in which many kinds of tools and methods are used. The purpose of this short note is to give another new, elementary and succinct proof of (1.4) by structuring an auxiliary function and using some known identity and inequalities. Lastly, by the auxiliary function two open problems are posed. 2. Lemmas The following lemmas are well-known or simple, but are useful. Lemma 1. [6]The following inequality ( ) a t + b t t a + b >, a,b > 0,a b, 2 2 holds if t>1 or t<0. It is reversed if 0 <t<1.
Inequalities for Gauss compound mean 1015 Let us consider an auxiliary function D n : R R defined by ( D n (t) =b t t t bn a n n+1 bt n+1 a ) t n+1 (2.1) ln b n ln a n ln b n+1 ln a n+1 where a n,b n is defined by (1.1). A simple calculation yields D n (t) = (b n/a n ) t/2 +(a n /b n ) t/2 (a n+1 /b n+1 ) t ( 2 ( ) ) = b t a t n + b t t n an + b n n By Lemma 1, D n (t) > 0ift>1ort<0 and D n (t) < 0if0<t<1. From this we have Lemma 2. For any n N, The function D n defined by (2.1) is increasing on each of the intervals (, 0) and (1, ), and is decreasing on (0, 1). Lemma 3. [8, 11]For the identric mean defined by ( ) a I(a, b) =e 1 a 1/(a b), a,b > 0,a b, b b the identity ( ) A(a, b) I(a, b) =G(a; b) exp L(a, b) 1, a,b > 0,a b, is valid, that is (2.2) I = Ge A/L 1, where A(a, b) =(a + b)/2,g(a, b) = ab. Lemma 4. [1, 9]For a, b > 0 with a b, both the following inequalities (2.3) L(a, b)+i(a, b) < A(a, b)+g(a, b), (2.4) hold. I(a, b) > A 2/3 (a, b) Lemma 5. [4]The logarithmic mean defined L defined by (1.3) is increasing with respect to each of the variables. 3. Proofs Proof of first inequality of (1.4). By Lemma 2, since the function D n is continuous on (, ), then for 0 <t<1 we have (3.1) D n (1) <D n (t) <D n (0).
1016 Zhen-hang Yang But ( D n (1) = b 1 bn a n n+1 b ) n+1 a n+1 and D n (0) = 0, ln b n ln a n ln b n+1 ln a n+1 hence b n a n < b n+1 a n+1, ln b n ln a n ln b n+1 ln a n+1 which was first proved by E. Neuman and J. Sándor [7, Theorem 3.1] and implies L(a, b) < AGM(a, b). Proof of second inequality of (1.4). Next let us prove that (3.2) L(a 3/2,b 3/2 ) >L(A 3/2,G 3/2 ). In fact, (2.2) and (2.3) can be written as (3.3) ln I ln G = A/L 1=(A L)/L, (3.4) I G < A L, respectively. It follows from (3.3) and (3.4) that L(I,G)= I G ln I ln G = I G L<L(a, b). A L By (2.4) and Lemma (5) we have (3.5) L(a, b) >L(I,G) >L(A 2/3,G). Replacing a, b by a 3/2,b 3/2 and a 2/3,b 2/3 by a, b in (3.5) yield (3.2), which shows that L(a 3/2,b 3/2 ) > (AGM) 3/2, i.e., second inequality of (1.4) holds. 4. Open problems Consider the auxiliary function D n : R R defined by (2.1). By Lemma (2), we see that D n is continuous and increasing on (1, ). Also, D n (1) < 0 by (3.1) and D n (3/2) > 0 due to (3.2). So D n (t) has an unique zero point on (1, 3/2), i.e. there is only t (n) 0 (1, 3/2) such that D n (t (n) 0 ) = 0, and then D n (t (n) 1 ) < 0 for t (n) 1 (1,t (n) 0 ), D n (t (n) 2 ) > 0 for t (n) 2 (t (n) 0, 3/2). Since t (n) 0 (1, 3/2) then exist t 0i := inf{t (n) 0 : n N}, t 0s := sup{t (n) 0 : n N},
and, clearly, Inequalities for Gauss compound mean t 0i < 3/2, 1 <t 0s 3/2. Now we pose two open problems. Problem 1. Is t 0i equal to 1? Remark 1. If the answer is no, then there must exist t 1 (1,t 0i ) such that D n (t 1 ) < 0 for all n, whence which implies (4.1) L(a t 1 n,b t 1 n ) <L(a t 1 n+1,b t 1 n+1 ) for all n, L t1 (a, b) < AGM(a, b), where L t (a, b) is defined by (1.2). Furthermore, are there some concrete constants t 1 (1,t 0i ) such that (4.1) holds? Problem 2. Is t 0s equal to 3/2? Remark 2. If the answer is no, then there must exist t 2 (t 0s, 3/2) such that whence D n (t 2 ) > 0 for all n, which implies (4.2) L(a t 2 n,b t 2 n ) >L(a t 2 n+1,b t 2 n+1 ) for all n, AGM(a, b) <L t2 (a, b), where L t (a, b) is defined by (1.2). Furthermore, are there some concrete constants t 2 (4.2) holds? (t 0s, 3/2) such that Remark 3. Replace a t,b t by a, b in L t (a, b) and a, b by a 1/t,b 1/t in AGM(a, b). Then the (4.1) is equivalent to (4.3) L(a, b) < AGM 1/t1 (a, b) for 1/t 1 (1/t 0i, 1). This shows that the open problem presented by Vamanamurthy is equivalent to our open problem 1.
