1 Current-induced and interaction-driven Dirac oint drag of massless quasirelativistic Fermions Inti Sodemann Deartment of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 039 arxiv:60.069v [cond-mat.mes-hall] 30 Aug 06 We study the quasiarticle roerties of two-dimensional massless Dirac Fermions when the manybody states ossess a finite momentum density in the clean limit. The lack of Galilean invariance endows the many-body states at finite momentum density with qualitative differences from those of the system at rest. At finite carrier densities we demonstrate the aearance of a current-induced distortion of the seudosin texture in momentum sace that can be viewed as a drag of the Dirac oint and the origin of which lies entirely in electron-electron interactions. We discuss the otential observation of this effect in grahene. PACS numbers: 67.0.Jn,73.3.-b, b,7.80.V Introduction Momentum is not often regarded as a good conserved quantity in electronic systems due to the resence of disorder and momentum transfer from electronic degrees of freedom to the lattice. However, in recent years, the advancement in quality in selected materials has made increasingly relevant the case for including the momentum conservation in our icture of electron transort. This regime, often referred to as hydrodynamic, has received considerable theoretical attention in grahene [ 8], and recent exeriments have found evidence for hydrodynamic transort in high-quality samles [9, 0]. In this work we will focus on the zero-temerature limit of Dirac Fermions with a finite carrier density. The momentum conservation allows one to consider the ground states in different subsaces of the many-body Hilbert sace that differ by their total momentum density. In a Galilean invariant system these different subsaces can be maed into one another by a Galilean boost, and therefore there is no new hysics to the roblem at finite momentum density. In a quasirelativistic system like grahene, the kinetic energy is Lorentz invariant but the interactions are not, and therefore there exists no simle maing between the roblem at different momentum densities making it a nontrivial arameter in the roblem. We will develo a simle mean field theory of the quasiarticle roerties of a system of interacting massless Dirac Fermions system, such as those arising in grahene, and show that in order to minimize their exchange energy in the current-carrying many-body state the electrons seudosin orientation changes in a way that can be described as a current-induced drag of the Dirac the oint. noninteracting limit with finite momentum density Consider a system of noninteracting two-dimensional massless Dirac Fermions. We would like to find its ground state under the constraints of a given total electron number and momentum: N = d r ψ rψ r, P = d r ψ rψ r. () In order to obtain states that have a finite momentum and article density in the thermodynamic limit we introduce Lagrange multiliers µ and u and find the unconstrained ground state of the following free energy: F = H µn u P = d r ψ rh ψ r, h = vσ µ u. () where σ denotes the Pauli matrices in the seudosin sace [6]. At finite carrier density the Fermi surface can be shown to be an ellise described in olar coordinates by: F (θ) = µ v su cos θ. (3) Here θ is the olar angle measured from the axis defined by u, and s = ( ) for electrons (holes). The article number (n) and current densities (j) can be found to be: n j h<0 h<0 d (π) = n D + sµ 4πv ( β ) 3/, d sµ v σ = u (π) 4πv ( β ), 3/ (4) where β = u/v, n D is the density at the Dirac oint. Notice that j = (n n D )u, making manifest the interretation of u as the average velocity for charge transort. The current density will vanish at the Dirac oint. As we will see, this conclusion follows from electron-hole symmetry even in the resence of interactions. This is an striking roerty of Dirac Fermions at the Dirac oint, that, even when they are unable to relax their total momentum, they can reach an equilibrium state with zero
2 total current. This is imossible for Galilean Fermions where a finite momentum density is always accomanied by a finite current density. Symmetry considerations We briefly describe in this section the constraints imosed by certain symmetries of the roblem. Consider the following oerations: T ψ r T = iσ y ψ r, T it = i, Cψ r C = σ x ψ r, Sψ r S = σ z ψ r. (5) All of the above are exected to be good symmetries of the full Hamiltonian including interactions. They can be interreted as a article-hole conjugation (C), a time-reversal-like (T ) and sace-inversion-like (S) oerations [7]. The article number and total momentum are however not invariant under these symmetries and their transformation roerties are summarized in Table I. The momentum is invariant under C, and the density is invariant under C only at the Dirac oint. However the current is odd under C. This imlies that, at the Dirac oint, the current must vanish even when averaged over a subsace of the Hilbert sace with a definite momentum. This shows why current-carrying many-body state are not allowed at equilibrium even if the system has a net momentum. This fact originates hysically from the roerty that the grou velocity of a single article state in the conduction band at momentum oints in the oosite direction to that of a state in the valence band with the same momentum. Therefore, article-hole excitations connecting those states can change the current without changing the momentum. Away from the Dirac oint the only symmetry that leaves the article and momentum densities unchanged is the roduct T S, but the current is even under this transformation, hence quasiequilibrium current-carrying states at non-zero momentum are allowed. Mean-field theory of interacting current-carrying states In addition to the kinetic energy we consider an interaction term in the Hamiltonian: V = q αβ v q ψ +q,αψ q,β ψ,βψ,α, (6) where α, β are labels for the seudosin degree of freedom of the Dirac Fermion. For the Coulomb interaction we would have v q = πe /ɛq, and v q=0 = 0 from the neutralizing background. Let us consider the case of a finite density of holes [8] and assume that they form a many-body Slater determinant in which every momentum eigenstate is either emty or singly occuied: Ψ = ( ) u α ψ α O, (7) F S α TABLE I: Action of time-reversal (T ), charge-conjugation (C) and sace-inversion (S) on the density measured from the Dirac oint n n D, the current density j, and the total manybody momentum P. T C S n n D j P Where F S is the region in momentum that is singly occuied, and u α are the sinor coordinates arametrizing the orientation of the state occuied at momentum in the seudosin Bloch shere. We will minimize the energy under the constraint of fixed article number and momentum within this set of states, therefore our rocedure can be viewed as a form of Hartree-Fock theory at finite momentum. The free energy including interactions is: F = tr[g (vσ µ u + Σ /)], G f n n, Σ A v G. (8) where f = 0() if the state is emty (occuied) and n is the state corresonding to unit vector n in the seudosin Bloch shere that is occuied at momentum. More exlicitly, the free energy reads as: F = (v n µ u )f ( + n n ) v f f., (9) To gain insight into the roblem it is useful to view it as a classical two-dimensional magnet. The momentum would lay the role of the real sace site at which Heisenberg-like (n ) and Ising-like (f ) degrees of freedom reside. For urely reulsive interactions the Heisenberg seudosins are couled ferromagnetically, but there is a Zeeman-like field v that tries to in the seudosins antiarallel to and creates a vortex-like configuration the singularity of which is the Dirac oint. Variations of the energy functional with resect to f can be written as: δ f F = ε δf, ε vn µ u A v ( + n n ) f. (0)
3 3 Demanding δ f F to be non-negative determines the shae of the Fermi surface: f = θ(ε ). To vary F with resect to n we add a set of Lagrange multiliers to enforce its unit length constraint: F + λ /n. The variation is: δ n F = [v( K ) + λ n ] δn, vk v n f. () Demanding this variation to be zero rovides the following equation for the unit vector: n = K K, () Equations (0)-() define a self-consistent loo determining the disersion and the coherent combination of states being occuied. Substituting Eq. () into Eq. (0) leads to a more succinct exression for the disersion: ε = v K µ u v f. (3) The vector K is of central imortance to this work. It is the same term resonsible for the logarithmic corrections to the quasiarticle disersion at the Dirac oint when the system carries no current []. More crucially, K determines the location in momentum sace of the Dirac oint: D = K D. In the absence of current the selfconsistent solution to this equation will be D = 0 but in the current-carrying many-body state the fact that K =0 0 shows that the Dirac oint is dislaced in momentum, therefore the current induces a drag in the Dirac oint. The Dirac oint drag originates as a way for the system to save on the exchange energy cost imosed by the seudosin vortex in momentum sace. At zero current the Fermi surface symmetrically surrounds the Dirac oint and the seudosin vortex core is inned at its center at zero momentum. In the noninteracting limit, when the system is in a current-carrying many-body state, the Fermi surface is deformed and its boundary in momentum sace becomes closer to the vortex core. In the hole-doing case the states inside the Fermi surface are unoccuied, and the occuied states closer to the Fermi surface are resonsible for most of the exchange energy cost. Therefore, when interactions are turned on the vortex core is ushed further into the center of the region of un-occuied states to save some of the exchange energy cost by making the seudosins of states near the Fermi surface closer to arallel. This icture is illustratred in the inset to Fig FIG. : (color online) Dirac-oint drag magnitude as a function of the average charge transort velocity β = u/v. The solid line is the rediction for the model screened interaction in grahene and the dashed line is for the bare Coulomb interaction. The dotted line is the linear in β aroximation from Eq. (6). Uer inset: seudosin orientation near the ellitical Fermi surface in the noninteracting current-carrying state. Lower inset: rearrangement of the seudosins roduced by interactions that accomanies the Dirac oint drag. The red dot indicates the origin in momentum, = 0, and the Dirac oint is located where the dotted lines meet. In the case of grahene we have a Dirac Fermion degeneracy of four, accounting for valley and sin multilicities, and the icture we just described would be essentially relicated for each of these Dirac Fermions. Also, we would like to note in assing that the couling of the electron seudosin to the current-density fluctuations in grahene has been studied near equilibrium and shown to lead to an interesting enhancement of the Drude eak and the lasma frequencies which are also related to its lack of Galilean invariance []. Perturbative estimates for the Dirac oint drag In this section we will comute erturbatively in the strength of the Coulomb interaction the Dirac oint drag. In order to assess the imact of screening we emloy the following simlified model for the screened Coulomb interaction: v q = πe q + πe ν F (4) where ν F = g F /(πv) is the density of states of the noninteracting system at zero current, and g = 4 accounts for the sin-valley degeneracy. To estimate K eturbatively we evaluate it from Eq. () relacing in the right hand side the Fermi surface and the seudosin orientation of the noninteracting system: n 0 = ˆ. We obtain thus the Dirac oint drag to first order in the screened Coulomb interaction, K 0 K =0, to be:
4 4 K 0 = αµû u [ β + αg β ( + αg) (αgβ) ], (5) where α = e /v is the effective fine structure constant of grahene. The erturbative exression in the case for the bare Coulomb interaction can be conveniently obtained from that above by taking g 0. Figure deicts the behavior of the Dirac oint drag as a function of β. The following is a good linear in β aroximation to Eq. (5): K 0 αβµû 4v( + gα) + O(β ). (6) Another quantity of interest is the energy at the Dirac oint in the current-carrying many-body state which can be estimated to first order in the screened Coulomb interaction to be: ε 0 ε D + µ + u D = v D f, ε 0 U 0 αµ [ ( + αg log β gα + gα β + gα + ( + gα) (gαβ) )] (7) where U 0 = /A v is a Hubbard-tye on-site energy scale which is indeendent of µ, u. To leading order in the interaction strength we can re-exress ε 0 and K 0 in terms of the density n and the current density j, which are quantities directly accessible to exeriment, by using the noninteracting exressions in Eq. (4). At a fixed current density the arameter β increases as the density aroaches the Dirac oint as n n D. However, in realistic grahene samles disorder-induced charge inhomogeneities become more rominent as the Dirac oint is aroached [3, 4]. Assuming n n D > 0 cm, which should be sufficient to ignore charge fluctuations in high-quality samles such as those on boron-nitride substrates [5], and a current of I = ma traversing a -µm -wide samle, leads to an estimate β < 0.6. From Eq. () this leads to an estimate of K Å. Therefore the effect is small but erhas within reach of high resolution angle-resolvedhotoemission-sectroscoy if it could be realized for samles in the resence of large current densities. Finally, we wish to emhasize that the icture we described requires essentially a local validity of the hydrodynamic descrition, not a global one. In a samle with, clean regions the electron-electron collision mean free ath could be smaller than the imurity or honon collisions mean free aths, hence validating hydrodynamics locally. The feasibility of achieving this regime has been recently demonstrated in exeriments [9, 0]. Thus, in the steady state of current flow there would be clean regions in the hydrodynamic regime with local values of the thermodynamic otentials µ and u. Provided that the variation of such quantities is sufficiently smooth on the scale of the Fermi wavelength we exect our icture to hold. Local sectroscoic measurements in such clean regions could examine the drag of the Dirac oint we describe. Summary We have described a many body aroach to the current-carrying many-body states in the clean limit that is nonerturbative in the current but relies on the conservation of momentum for alying a quasiequilibrium treatment. More secifically, we have studied quasiarticle self-energy effects in the current-carrying many-body states of interacting massless Dirac Fermions. An interesting drag of the Dirac oint arises as a mean for the system to reduce exchange energy. Although numerically small, the effect might be observable in high quality grahene samles in the regime of large current densities and small carrier densities and sufficiently away from the Dirac oint to ignore disorder-induced charge inhomogeneities.
