5 Radon free air purification system Radon-free SuperKamiokande-like Air Factory kg -50 o C A( 222 Rn) in the LSM ~ 5-10 Bq/m 3 Fresh air (taken at 3000 m) Lab volume renewed 2 times/h Production of radon free air: 150 m 3 /h A( 222 Rn) ~ 0.1 Bq/m 3 Radon free air send around NEMO 3, EDELWEISS and some of the Ge detectors

6 NEMO 3: Neutrinoless Double beta decay search (A,Z) (A,Z+2) + 2 e - nature of neutrino dirac (ν ν) or Majorana (ν=ν) Mass scale of the neutrinos Detector is running since 2003 β 7 kg 100 Mo β Tracko-calo detector T 1/2 (ββ0ν) > y (90% CL) Expected sensitivity in 2009: T 1/2 (ββ0ν) > y (90% CL)

12 Physics Motivations Nucleon Decay Super Novae Neutrinos: burst & relic Solar & Atmospheric Neutrinos Neutrinos from Accelerators Super Beam, Beta Beam And also: Dark Matter (WIMP) indirect detection, High energy neutrinos,

13 Two examples of scenario for Water Cerenkov detectors a) 3 shafts of m 3 each, with a fiducial mass of 450 Ktons ( UNO-like scenario) b) 4 shafts of m 3 each, with a fiducial mass of 600 Ktons -> In both scenarios one additional shaft would be necessary for a Liquid Argon detector of about 100 ktons total mass

14 A MegaTon scale Detector 3 to 4 Water Cerenkov modules ( = 20 x Super K 500kT fiducial mass) equipped with a large number of Photodetectors (eg. 250,000 PMTs 12 ) a very well proved and robust technique which provided already remarkable physical results mainly in Nucleon Decay and Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics

15 Very intense MeV Neutrino Beams from CERN 6 He 18 Ne Super Beam based on a 4MW Proton Driver (eg. SPL) : ν μ and ν μ from pion decay Beta Beam (possibly in connection with the EURISOL project) ν e and ν e from heavy ions decay (Focused ν beam, energy very well Known, pure flavor composition) Neutrino flux of β-beam (γ=100) And CERN-SPL, Super-beam, 3.5 GeV at 130 km) (HEP-ph/ v1)

16 Main Physics potential non accelerator-based physics Nucleon decay - up to ~10 35 yrs (p e + π 0 ) - few yrs (p ν K + ) with a detection threshold below 6MeV Neutrino bursts from Super-Novae explosion 150,000 events from SN at 10kpc 50 events from Andromeda Relic Neutrinos from past Super-Novae explosions 250 events/10y/0.5mt (with pure water) 2500 events/10y/0.5mt (with Gd loaded water)

17 Superbeam + beta beam together 2yrs SUPERBEAM 4 ν flavours + K ν μ ν e 2 beams 1 detector BETABEAM ν e ν μ pure 5yrs π + /π 8yrs ν μ ν e ν e ν μ 5yrs 2 ways of testing CP, T and CPT : redundancy and check of systematics

20 Outlook - Fréjus has various avantages: right distance from CERN, easy access by train and car, horizontal access, possibility to dig large cavities,. - LSM participate to the ILIAS network of underground Lab - (with Gran Sasso, Canfranc, Boulby, Pyhasalmi) -Cooperation agreement with JINR Dubna -Activities in Dark matter, neutrino physics, Gamma spectroscopy and applications -2 projects in the futur: - 50,000 m 3 extension (dark matter, double beta) - Huge cavern for Megaton detector (proton decay, neutrino) Studies in progress (cavity shape, cost, ) Project of new office in Modane in 2008
