1 HOMOLOGICALLY TRIVIAL SYMPLECTIC CYCLIC ACTIONS NEED NOT EXTEND TO HAMILTONIAN CIRCLE ACTIONS RIVER CHIANG AND LIAT KESSLER arxiv: v [math.sg] 27 Mar 209 Abstrat. We give examples of sympleti ations of a yli group, inuing a trivial ation on homology, on four-manifols that amit Hamiltonian irle ations, an show that they o not exten to Hamiltonian irle ations. Our work applies holomorphi methos to exten ombinatorial tools evelope for irle ations to stuy yli ations.. Introution.. Question. Does every homologially trivial sympleti yli ation exten to a Hamiltonian irle ation on lose onnete sympleti four-manifols that amit Hamiltonian irle ations? By a yli ation we mean an ation of a yli group Z n = Z/nZ of finite orer < n <. An ation is alle homologially trivial if it inues the ientity map on homology. A irle ation is always homologially trivial beause the irle group is onnete. An effetive sympleti ation of a Lie group G on a sympleti manifol (M,ω) is alle Hamiltonian if it amits a moment map, i.e., an equivariant smooth map Φ: M g suh that the omponents Φ ξ = Φ,ξ satisfy Hamilton s equation Φ ξ = ι(ξ M )ω, for all ξ g. Here ξ M is the vetor fiel that generates the ation on M of the oneparameter subgroup {exp(tξ) t R} of G. There are four-manifols that amit sympleti yli ations but not irle ations [6, 7]. Here we are only intereste in the sympleti manifols that amit Hamiltonian irle ations. Question. was aske by Jarek Kera at the Hofer 20 onferene in Einburgh in July 200. It remaine open sine then. In this paper we show that the answer is No. The novelty of our work is in the appliation of holomorphi methos to exten ombinatorial tools evelope for irle ations to stuy yli ations. In Setion 5 we give an example of a sympleti ation of Z 2, ating trivially on homology, on a sympleti manifol M that is obtaine from CP 2 with the Fubini Stuy form by six sympleti blowups, an show that it annot exten to a Hamiltonian irle ation, 200 Mathematis Subjet Classifiation. 53D35, 53D20, 57R7, 57S5.
2 2 RIVER CHIANG AND LIAT KESSLER though the manifol oes amit a Hamiltonian irle ation. Note that H (M;R) = {0}, hene every sympleti irle ation on M is Hamiltonian. In the onstrution of the Z 2 -ation, we start from a Hamiltonian irle ation on CP 2 blown up sympletially five times, that amits a Z 2 -fixe sphere, an perform a Z 2 - equivariant omplex blowup at a point in the Z 2 -fixe sphere that is not S -fixe. We use Nakai s riterion for the existene of a Kähler form in a ohomology lass, as well as the fat that the obtaine omplex manifol is a weak el Pezzo surfae of egree 3, an the results of Brue Wall [5] on holomorphi urves in ubi surfaes. We then apply the results of Li Liu [2], Taubes Seiberg Witten [30] an Karshon Kessler [8] to show that this Kähler form is obtaine by sympleti blowups, of ertain sizes, from the Fubini Stuy form on CP 2. IntheproofthattheationoesnotextentoaHamiltonianirleation, weshowthat the onfiguration of invariant spheres of negative self intersetion in the onstrute Z 2 - ation is ifferent from that of any Hamiltonian irle ation on the sympleti manifol. For this we use the eorate graphs assoiate to Hamiltonian irle ations on fourmanifols by Karshon[5] an Karshon Kessler Pinsonnault[9] haraterization of irle ations on sympleti blowups of CP 2. In Setion 6 we give an example of a homologially trivial sympleti ation of Z 2 on a sympleti manifol that is obtaine by three sympleti blowups from Σ S 2 with a sympleti ruling, where Σ is a Riemann surfae of positive genus. Weshow that it annot exten to a Hamiltonian irle ation, though the manifol oes amit a Hamiltonian irle ation. In this setion we use Holm Kessler [4] haraterization of Hamiltonian irle ations on sympleti four-manifols that are not simply onnete. We onlue our paper, in Setion 7, with remarks onerning the generator of the Z 2 -ation from Setion 5. Aknowlegements. We thank Yael Karshon an Leoni Polterovih for telling us about Kera s question. We thank them as well as Masanori Kobayashi an Kaoru Ono for helpful suggestions an stimulating isussions. We thank Shin-Yao Jow for teahing us how to o Claim 6.2 (iii). RC is supporte by MoST M an NCTS, Taiwan. 2. Hamiltonian irle ations an eorate graphs A Hamiltonian S -spae is a triple (M,ω,Φ) that onsists of a lose onnete sympleti four-manifol (M,ω) with a Hamiltonian S -ation an moment map Φ : M R, where we ientify the Lie algebra of S an its ual with R. The moment map Φ is a Morse Bott funtion whose ritial set orrespons to the fixe point set of the ation,
3 CYCLIC ACTIONS NEED NOT EXTEND TO CIRCLE ACTIONS 3 whih is a union of sympleti submanifols by the loal normal form theorem for Hamiltonian ations. Sine M is four-imensional, the ritial set ontains only isolate points an two-imensional submanifols. The latter an only our at the extrema of Φ. The maximum an minimum of the moment map is eah attaine on exatly one omponent of the fixe point set. An S invariant Riemannian metri, on a Hamiltonian S -spae (M,ω,Φ) is alle ompatible if the automorphism J: TM TM efine by, = ω(,j ) is an almost omplex struture, i.e., J 2 = I. Suh a J is S invariant, an we refer to it as a ompatible almost omplex struture. With respet to a ompatible metri, the graient vetor fiel of the moment map is (2.) graφ = Jξ M, where J is the orresponing almost omplex struture an ξ M is the vetor fiel that generates the S -ation. The vetor fiels ξ M an Jξ M generate a C = (S ) C ation. The losure of a non-trivial C orbit is a sphere, alle a graient sphere. On a graient sphere, S ats by rotation with two fixe points at the north an south poles; all other points on the sphere have the same stabilizer. A graient sphere is smooth at its poles exept in the following situation []: if the graient sphere is free (i.e., of trivial stabilizer) an the pole in question is an isolate minimum (or maximum) of Φ with both isotropy weights > (or < ). In partiular, a non-free graient sphere is smoothly embee. The existene of non-free graient spheres oes not epen on the ompatible metris (or almost omplex strutures); eah of these oinies with a Z n -sphere for some n >, whih is a onnete omponent of the losure of the set of points in M with stabilizer Z n. On the other han, a free graient sphere onneting two interior fixe points an break into two free graient spheres onneting to the maximum an minimum respetively, after a perturbation of ompatible metris in its neighborhoo. This is emonstrate in Figure 2., where the free graient spheres are epite as eges of label (as explaine in the following paragraph). For a generi ompatible metri on (M, ω, Φ), there exists no free graient sphere whose north an south poles are both interior fixe points [5, Corollary 3.8]. With eah Hamiltonian S -spae, we assoiate a eorate graph as follows. For eah isolate fixe point, there is a vertex labele by its moment map value. For eah fixe surfae S, there is a fat vertex labele by its moment map value, its size ω, an 2π S its genus g. The moment map value etermines the vertial plaement of a (fat or not) vertex. The horizontal plaement is one at liberty. For eah Z n -sphere, n >, there is an ege onneting the verties orresponing to its fixe points an labele by the integer n. We a eges labele for free graient spheres so that any vertex orresponing to an interior fixe point is attahe to one ege from above an one ege from below. We may a a number of reunant eges labele for free graient spheres from the

Effet on the free graient spheres after a hange of ompatible metri (or almost omplex struture). maximum of Φ to the minimum of Φ if is an isotropy weight (subjet to sign) for both the maximum an minimum. Two Hamiltonian S -spaes (M,ω,Φ) an (M,ω,Φ ) are isomorphi if an only if they have the same eorate graph without reunant eges for a generi ompatible metri [5, Proposition 4.]. Vertial translations of the graph orrespon to equivariant sympletomorphisms of the assoiate manifol, an flips upsie own orrespon to automorphisms of the irle Remark. The eorate graph efine here is the extene graph in [5, Setion 5], whih as eges of label to the graph in [5, Setion 2.]. For a generi ompatible metri, the extene graph without reunant eges is etermine by the graph [5, Lemma 3.9] Remark. Sine the Hamiltonian S -ation is require to be effetive, only eges of label an emerge fromafixe surfae. Two eges sharing thesame vertex have relatively prime ege labels sine they represent the isotropy weights at the fixe point (subjet to sign). Moreover, the sphere S orresponing to an ege of label n is a sympleti sphere whose size ω is /n of the ifferene of the moment map values of its verties. 2π S 2.4. Remark. In our figures, we often omit some of the labels. We omit the moment map labels; they are represente by the heights of the verties. We omit the genus labels: in Setions 3 an 5, the genus labels are 0; in Setion 6, the genus labels g = g(σ) are positive. We omit the size labels; the with of fat verties, or any horizontal spae of the graphs, oes not arry atual meanings. We omit the ege label for free graient spheres. A (parametrize) J-holomorphi urve is a map from a ompat Riemann surfae to an almost omplex manifol, f: (Σ, j) (M, J), that satisfies the Cauhy Riemann equation f j = J f.
5 CYCLIC ACTIONS NEED NOT EXTEND TO CIRCLE ACTIONS 5 When Σ = CP, the map f is alle a (parametrize) J-holomorphi sphere. By (2.) an the fat that a non-free graient sphere is smoothly embee, we an eue that eah Z n -sphere is J-holomorphi. This is a general phenomenon for embee non-free spheres by the following lemma: 2.5. Lemma. Let (M,J) be an almost omplex manifol suh that J is invariant uner an ation of a ompat Lie group G on M, i.e., σ g J = J σ g for all g G. Let S be an embee sphere in M. Assume that S is a onnete omponent of the fixe point set of a non-trivial subgroup {e} H < G. Then S is a J-holomorphi sphere. Proof. First, it follows from the loal normal form of a ompat Lie group ation on a manifol that TS = {v TM σ h v = v for all h H}. Sine eah of the maps σ h is J-holomorphi, for every w TS, the vetor Jw satisfies σ h (Jw) = J(σ h w) = Jw. Hene TS is lose uner J. As an almost omplex manifol of real imension two, (S,J TS ) is a omplex manifol, an the embeing of the sphere is J-holomorphi (with respet to this omplex struture). Equivariant sympleti blowups. Reall that we an think of a sympleti blowup of size δ = r 2 /2 as utting out an embee ball of raius r an ientifying the bounary to an exeptional sphere via the Hopf map. This arries a sympleti form that integrates on the sphere to 2πδ. For more etails see [3] an [26, Setion 7.]. If the embeing of the ball is G-equivariant entere at a G-fixe point, then the G-ation extens to the sympleti blowup, see etails in [7]. If the ation is Hamiltonian, its moment map naturally extens to the equivariant sympleti blowup. For all the possible effets of S -equivariant sympleti blowups at fixe points of a Hamiltonian S -spae (M,ω,Φ), see Figures 2.2, 2.3, an 2.4, together with Figures 2.3 an 2.4 turne upsie own [5] Remark. By [5, Proposition 7.2], a Hamiltonian S -spae amits an S -equivariant blowup of size δ > 0 entere at some fixe point if an only if one obtains a vali eorate graph after the blowup. That is, the (fat or not) verties reate in the blowup o not surpass the other pre-existing (fat or not) verties in the same hain of eges, an the fat verties after the blowup have positive size labels. For quantitative esription, see [7, Lemma 3.3]. 3. Blowups of CP 2 Sympleti blowups of CP 2. For eah nonnegative integer k, let M k enote a omplex blowup of the omplex projetive plane CP 2 at k points. We have a eomposition (3.) H 2 (M k ) = ZL ZE... ZE k,

As a smooth oriente manifol, M k is CP 2 #kcp 2, the manifol that is obtaine form CP 2 (with the stanar orientation) by k iterations of onnete sum with CP 2 (i.e., CP 2 with the opposite orientation) Definition. A blowup form on M k is a sympleti form for whih there exist pairwise isjoint embee sympleti spheres in the lasses L,E,...,E k Lemma. [8, Lemmas.5,.6] The set of blowup forms on M k is an equivalene lass uner the following equivalene relation: sympleti forms ω an ω on M k are equivalent if an only if there exists a iffeomorphism f: M k M k that ats trivially on homology an suh that f ω an ω are homotopi through sympleti forms. Any two ohomologous blowup forms on M k are iffeomorphi by a iffeomorphism that ats trivially on homology. This is a result of the work of Gromov an MDuff, [2, 2.4.A, 2.4.A ], [23], [26, Proposition 7.2], an [24]. For a blowup form ω on M k, the vetor ( [ω],l ; [ω],π 2π,..., [ω],π k ) efine by the pairing of its ohomology lass with the homology lasses (L;E,...,E k ) equals the vetor ( ω; 2π C 2π C ω,..., 2π C k ω), where C, C,...,C k are embee sympleti spheres in L, E,...,E k. We will say that the blow up form (or its ohomology lass) is

By Lemma 3.3, the blowup form on M k enoe by the vetor (λ;δ,...,δ k ) isunique upto aiffeomorphism that atstrivially onhomology. Weenote any of these sympleti manifols by (M k,ω λ;δ,...,δ k ). By Li Liu [2, Theorem A] an Taubes Seiberg Witten theory [30], for every sympleti form on M k with a stanar anonial lass, that is, for whih the pairing of the first Chern lass (TM k ) with (L;E,...,E k ) equals 2π(3;,...,), the lasses L,E,...,E k are represente by sympletially embee spheres. The next orollary follows. See [8, Remark 6.]. See also the isussion in Salamon [29, Examples 3.8, 3.9, 3.0] Corollary. [8, Remark 6.] Every sympleti form on M k with a stanar anonial lass is a blowup form. 3.5.Definition. Letk 3, anlet λ,δ,...,δ k berealnumbers. Thevetor (λ;δ,...,δ k ) is reue if (3.6) δ... δ k an δ +δ 2 +δ 3 λ. In [8, Theorem.9], Karshon an Kessler show, using the work of Li Li [20], that for a vetor (λ;δ,...,δ k ) with positive entries that is reue an that satisfies the volume inequality λ 2 δ 2... δ k 2 > 0, there exists a blowup form ω λ;δ,...,δ k. Hamiltonian S -ations on blowups of CP 2. The eorate graphs, or their upsieown version, of Hamiltonian S -ations on M, namely, CP 2 blown up at a point, with a blowup form ω λ;δ are shown in Figures 3. an 3.2; the integer n = 2l with l < λ/(λ δ ). Blowups of Σ S 2 Sympleti blowups of Σ S 2. Let (Σ,j) be a ompat onnete Riemann surfae of positive genus g = g(σ) > 0 enowe with a omplex struture j. We fix a smooth struture on the trivial bunle Σ S 2, an equip it with the prout omplex struture, in whih eah fiber is a holomorphi sphere. We fix basepoints S 2 an Σ, an enote F := [ S 2 ], B := [Σ ], the homology lasses in H 2 (Σ S 2 ;Z). For a non-negative integer k, let W k enote a omplex blowup of Σ S 2 at k points. Let E,...,E k enote the homology lasses of the exeptional ivisors. We say that a vetor (λ F,λ B ;δ,...,δ k ) in R 2+k enoes a ohomology lass Ω H 2 (W k ;R) if 2π Ω,F = λ F, 2π Ω,E j = δ j for j =,...,k, an 2π Ω,B = λ B.

By [5, Theorem 7.], (M,ω) amits an integrable omplex struture suh that the S -ation is holomorphi an the sympleti form is Kähler. Now perform a Z 2 -equivariant omplex blowup at a point p in the Z 2 -sphere in E 5 that is not an S -fixe point. Let π: M M be the equivariant omplex blowup map. Let Ẽ6 = π (p) be the exeptional ivisor an Ξ 6 be its Poinaré ual in H 2 ( M). Let Ω := π Ω 8 Ξ 6, where Ω is the ohomology lass of ω. We laim that Ω ontains a Kähler form. The first 7 lasses in (5.2) form a basis of the Piar group an therefore the Z 2 -ation inues the ientity map on homology. All 0 lasses in(5.2) minimally generate the effetive one (see, e.g., [3, Proposition ]). Substituting thevetor 2π(; 2, 4, 4, 4, 3 6, 8 ) as the pairing of Ω with (L;E,...,E 6 ), we verify that Ω 2 > 0 an that Ω,[C] > 0 for eah of these negative urves an hene for every irreuible urve. Therefore, by Nakai s riterion, Ω ontains a Kähler form. By averaging with respet to the holomorphi Z 2 - ation, (an sine the ation is ientity on homology), we obtain an invariant Kähler form ω in Ω. Note that the form ω is with a stanar anonial lass. Hene, by Corollary 3.4, the sympleti form ω is a blowup form on M = M 6. Hene we obtain a homologially trivial sympleti Z 2 -ation on M 6 with a blowup form ω ; 2, 4, 4, 4, 3. The ajuntion formula implies that the Z 6, 2 -fixe spheres in E, 8 E 5 E 6, an L E 4 are all embee. This shows that (M 6,ω ; 2, 4, 4, 4, 3 ) amits a Hamiltonian S -ation. 6, We laim that there is no Hamiltonian irle ation that extens the onstrute Z 2 -ation. Assume that there is suh a Hamiltonian irle ation. Note that the vetor (;,,,, 3, ) is reue. By Theorem 3.8, this irle ation on (M 6,ω ; 2, 4, 4, 4, 3 ) is obtaine from a Hamiltonian irle ation on (CP 2 #CP 2,ω 6, 8 ; ) 2 by performing five equivariant sympleti blowups of sizes /4, /4, /4, 3/6, /8 in this orer. By Lemma 2.5, for every S -invariant ompatible almost omplex struture J, the embee spheres of non-trivial stabilizers are J-holomorphi; hene the fat verties an the eges of label greater than in the eorate graphs orrespon to J-holomorphi spheres. After the last S -equivariant sympleti blowup that proues E 6 of size /8, we will get a J-holomorphi sphere in one of the following lasses: E 5 ; E E i E 5 for i = 2, 3, 4; E E i E 6 for i = 2, 3, 4, 5; L E i E j E k with i, j, k {2, 3, 4, 5} an i < j < k; L E i E j E k E l with i, j, k, l {2, 3, 4, 5, 6} an i < j < k < l. By the onstrution of the Z 2 -ation an the assumption that the irle ation extens the Z 2 -ation, there are Z 2 -fixe embee spheres in E, L E 4, an E 5 E 6. By Lemma 2.5 again, there are J-holomorphi spheres in these lasses. Note that E 5 (E 5 E 6 ) = ; (E E 5 ) (E ) = 2, an (E E i E 5 ) (E ) = for i = 3, 4; (E E 6 ) (E ) = 2, an (E E i E 6 ) (E ) = for i = 3, 4, 5; (L E j E k ) (E ) =, where j, k {3, 4, 5} an j < k, an (L E 4 E 5 ) (L E 4 ) = ; (L E j E k E l ) (E ) =, where j, k, l {3, 4, 5, 6} an j < k < l, an (L E 4 E 5 E 6 ) (L E 4 ) =. In eah of the above ases we have a ontraition to the positivity of intersetions of J-holomorphi spheres [27, Appenix E an Proposition 2.4.4].

We laim that Ω ontains a Kähler form. As before, by Nakai s riterion, an sine Ω 2 > 0, it is enough to show that Ω,[C] > 0 for every omplex urve C M. This follows from the following laim Claim. Consier the lasses F E,,, E, B E. (i) For eah of these lasses, its pairing with Ω is positive. (ii) Eah of the lasses ontains a Z 2 -invariant omplex urve. (iii) The lasses generate the effetive one of omplex urves in M. Proof. (i) follows from the efinition of Ω. (ii) follows from the blowup onstrution. For (iii), we only nee to verify that the proper transform of an irreuible urve on M, that passes through the point p with multipliity m, represents a non-negative ombination of
18 8 RIVER CHIANG AND LIAT KESSLER F E B E B E Figure 6.2. Speial onfiguration. these lasses. Reall that the lasses F E,, E, B E. generate the effetive one in M (before the thir blowup), an eah is represente by an S -invariant urve. This follows from [5, Proposition C.6 an Theorem 7.], or an inutive argument similar to the omputation below. Hene the proper transform an be expresse as D = D m = a(f E )+b +(E )+(B E ) m = a(f E )+b( )+(b m) +(E )+(B E ) with a,b,, 0. It remains to show that b m 0. Denote by π an π 2 the first an seon blowup maps at p an p 2 in the onstrution of M. We have m = D = mult p D D = mult p2 π 2 (D) π 2 (D) E = mult p π (π 2 (D)) π π 2 (D) B = (af +B) B a. Also, by positivity of intersetions of omplex urves in M, 0 D (F E ) = 2a+b. Combining these two inequalities, we have m b. The onfiguration of the generating lasses is illustrate in Figure 6.2. Again note that it is not a eorate graph for a Hamiltonian irle ation. By averaging with respet to the holomorphi Z 2 -ation, we get an invariant Kähler form ω on M in Ω. By [22, Lemma 3.5 Part 2] an [2, Theorem A], sine the Chern lass of ω is the same as that of a blowup form, it is a blowup form. This yiels a homologially trivial sympleti Z 2 -ation on ( M, ω) = (W 3,ω,; 3 5, 7 20, 3 0 ). The ajuntion formula implies that the Z 2 -fixe sphere in is embee.
19 CYCLIC ACTIONS NEED NOT EXTEND TO CIRCLE ACTIONS 9 Note that the manifol (W 3,ω,; 3 5, 7 20, 3 ) oes amit a Hamiltonian irle ation, whose 0 eorate graph is shown on the right of Figure We laim that there is no Hamiltonian irle ation that extens the onstrute Z 2 -ation. Note that the vetor (,; 3, 7, 3 ) is reue. By Theorem 4.2, an extening Hamiltonian irle ation woul have been obtaine from a Hamiltonian irle ation on (Σ S 2,ω, ) by S -equivariant sympleti blowups of sizes 3/5,7/20,3/0, in this orer. There is exatly one Hamiltonian S -ation on (Σ S 2,ω, ), whose eorate graph is shown in Figure 4. with l = 0. Therefore, a Hamiltonian S -ation on (W 3,ω,; 3 5, 7 20, 3 ) is obtaine from this ation by one of the following sequenes of equivariant blowups of sizes 3/5,7/20,3/0 (up to a hange of ompatible metri (or 0 almost omplex struture)). Type I: two blowups at one fixe surfae an one at the other (performe simultaneously); Type II: a blowup at a fixe surfae, followe by a seon blowup at the interior fixe point reate at the first blowup (to get a Z 2 -sphere in ), an a thir blowup at one of the fixe surfaes; Type III: the first an the seon blowups are eah at a fixe surfae (either the sameone, orifferentones), followebyablowupattheinteriorfixepointreate at the first blowup (note that the seon an the thir blowups an be performe simultaneously); Type IV: the first an the seon blowups are eah at a fixe surfae (either the sameone, orifferentones), followebyablowupattheinteriorfixepointreate at the seon blowup. The other options are rule out ue to size restritions. In partiular, if the seon blowup is at the interior fixe point reate at the first blowup, obtaining a Z 2 -sphere in, then one annot perform an S -blowup of size 3 0 left of Figure 6. (by the blue eges). at one of its poles, as shown on the By the proof of [5, Theorem 7.], for eah type of the Hamiltonian S -ations, the omplex struture J obtaine from the prout omplex struture on Σ S 2 by S - equivariant omplex blowups at the same points, in the same orer, is ompatible with the sympleti form. Note that an exeptional ivisor is a J-holomorphi sphere, an so is the proper transform of the exeptional ivisor of a previous blowup. By Lemma 2.5, a Z 2 -sphere is also J-holomorphi. In partiular, we will have a J-holomorphi sphere in in Types I, II, an III; a J-holomorphi sphere in that is not fixe by Z 2 in Type IV (as shown in Figure 6.3 or its upsie-own). However, bytheonstrution ofthez 2 -ationantheassumption that thehamiltonian irle ation extens the Z 2 -ation, there is a Z 2 -fixe embee sphere in. By

Its intersetion with a ifferent J-holomorphi sphere in (e.g. one that is not Z 2 -fixe), or with a J-holomorphi sphere in is negative. Therefore, an extening Hamiltonian irle ation of eah of the four types woul have yiele a ontraition to positivity of intersetions of holomorphi urves. 6.4.Remark. Theaboveonstrutionanbegeneralizetoproueasympleti Z r -ation on W r+ with a blowup form, that oes not exten to a Hamiltonian irle ation, for an even integer r > 2. Start from the same Hamiltonian S -ation on (Σ S 2,ω, ) as before. Perform a sequene of r S -equivariant sympleti blowups so that the resulting eorate graph is as the one illustrate on the left of Figure 6.4 for r = 4. Next perform a Z r -equivariant omplex blowup at a point in the Z r -sphere in E r that is not an S -fixe point. The resulting onfiguration of Z r -invariant omplex urves on W r+ is illustrate in Figure 6.5 for r = 4. Assume that the blowup sizes δ,...,δ r an δ r+ satisfy ertain onitions; for example, we take δ i = 22r i + 2 2r for i r, an δ r+ = 2 r. Sine r is even, Z 2 < Z r. Similar arguments as before show that we obtain a Z r -invariant blowup form ω = ω,;δ,...,δ r+ on W r+, an that for any invariant ω-ompatible almost omplex struture J there are J-holomorphi spheres, Z r -fixe in E r E r+ an Z 2 -fixe ini i+ for i < r 2. The sympleti manifol (W r+,ω)oes amit a Hamiltonian S -ation, as shown on the right of Figure 6.4 for r = 4. The main iffiulty is to etermine the generators of the effetive one of omplex urves. Note that the effetive one may not be finitely generate for a omplex blowup of CP 2 at 9 points or more. 7. Further Remarks A sympleti ation of a finite yli group Z/Z n is a Hamiltonian ation with the moment map being ientially zero. However, this oes not mean the ation is generate by a Hamiltonian iffeomorphism. The generator of the ation is a perioi map of perio ninsymp(m,ω),orinthetorellipartofsymp(m,ω)iftheationishomologiallytrivial. It woul be very interesting to know whether any of our Z 2 -ations is generate by a Hamiltonian iffeomorphism an therefore orrespons to a Z 2 -subgroup in Ham(M,ω). This is a har question: we o not have an answer but we give two remarks onerning the example in Setion Remark. Let G = Z/pZ be a finite yli group of prime orer p. Consier a G-ation generate by a Hamiltonian iffeomorphism on a lose sympleti manifol M. Let F be the fixe point set of the G-ation. Denote by SB the sum of Betti numbers. Then SB(F) = SB(M), while homology is taken with Z/pZ oeffiients. Inee, SB(F) is boune above by SB(M) for any yli ation of prime orer p, not neessarily generate by a Hamiltonian iffeomorphism[4, Chapter 3]. On the other han, let σ enote the Hamiltonian iffeomorphism generating the yli ation. The graph of σ an the iagonal interset leanly in M M. Then Arnol s onjeture implies that SB(F) is boune below by SB(M), using Floer homology for lean intersetions [28]. The Z 2 -ation on ( M, ω) onstrute in Setion 5. has 3 fixe spheres an 3 fixe points. Hene SB(F) = 9 = SB( M = M 6 ). It oes not onlue whether this Z 2 -ation is generate by a Hamiltonian iffeomorphism.
22 22 RIVER CHIANG AND LIAT KESSLER 7.2. Remark. The generator of the Z 2 -ation onstrute in Setion 5. efines a nontrivial sympletomorphism σ: ( M, ω) ( M, ω), where M = M 6 an ω = ω ; 2, 4, 4, 4, 3. 6, 8 We laim that this map is smoothly isotopi to the ientity. The iea goes as follows: For any 0 < δ 8, one an perform a Z 2-equivariant sympleti blowup of size δ at the same point p in the Z 2 -sphere S in E 5 in M. The inue Z 2 -ation on the blowup M efines a iffeomorphism (in fat a sympletomorphism with a ifferent sympleti form) σ δ : M M, whih is smoothly isotopi to σ. For δ suffiiently small, one fins an isotopy of equivariant embeings of δ-balls in the loal normal form of the S -invariant sphere S. Hene σ δ is isotopi to the generator σ p0 : M M of the Z2 -ation inue by a Z 2 -equivariant blowup of size δ at the north pole p 0 of S. If δ is suffiiently small, one an perform an S -equivariant sympleti blowup of size δ at the S -fixe point p 0 [5, Theorem 7., Proposition 7.2], to get a Hamiltonian S -ation on M; the element π in S efines a sympletomorphism σ S : M M, whih is smoothly isotopi to σp0 an hene to σ. Sine S is onnete, σ S is isotopi to the ientity. We o not know whether the sympletomorphism σ is sympletially isotopi to the ientity. If it is, it woul present a yli subgroup in Ham( M, ω) whih oes not embe in a irle subgroup of Ham( M, ω). This is ue to the fat that Ham( M, ω) oinies with the ientity omponent of Symp( M, ω) when H ( M) is trivial. If it is not, it may be sympletially isotopi to a Dehn Seiel twist, or it may provie another example of a sympletomorphism that is smoothly, but not sympletially, isotopi to the ientity.
