1 SURFACE WAVES OF NON-RAYLEIGH TYPE by SERGEY V. KUZNETSOV Institute for Problems in Mehanis Prosp. Vernadskogo, 0, Mosow, 75 Russia Abstrat. Existene of surfae waves of non-rayleigh type propagating on some anisotropi elasti half-spaes is proved. Conditions for originating the non-rayleigh type waves are analyzed. An example of a transversely isotropi material admitting a surfae wave of the non- Rayleigh type, is onstruted.. Introdution. In our previous paper [] it was shown that some anisotropi elasti materials exhibit property of non existene of the genuine Rayleigh waves: ux ( ) = C k kmke k = ir( γ ν x n x t) (.) where C k are omplex oeffiients determined up to a multiplier by the tration-free boundary onditions; m k are omplex eigenvetors of the Christoffel equation, whih will be introdued further; these eigenvetors orrespond to omplex roots γ k of the harateristi polynomial; r is the (real) wave number; ν is an outward normal to the boundary Π ν of the half-spae along whih the surfae wave propagates; n Πν is the unit vetor determining diretion of propagation of the surfae wave, and is the phase speed. The terms u ( ) k k x mke ir( γ ν x n x t) (.) are alled partial waves. As was shown in [], the existene of the forbidden diretions or forbidden planes along whih the genuine Rayleigh wave annot propagate is due to appearing the Jordan bloks in a speially onstruted -matrix assoiated with the Christoffel equation. The following analysis reveals that the situation regarded in [] appears to be more ompliated. The Jordan bloks in the regarded matrix lead to a qualitative hange of the struture of the partial waves (.) and, while the genuine Rayleigh wave at the situation onsidered in [] does not exist, there remains an exponentially attenuating with depth surfae wave of the non-rayleigh type.

2 . Basi notations. Equation (.) an be written in the equivalent form: k k det ( γ ν n) C ( nγ ν ) ρ I = 0 (.4) The left-hand side of Eq. (.4) represents a polynomial of degree with respet to γ k. REMARK.. It an be shown, see [], that if the phase speed does not exeed the so alled lower iting speed ( ): <, (.5) then all the roots of Eq. (.) are omplex with Im( γk ) 0. The inequality (.5) ensures that three partial waves (.) with Im( γ k ) < 0 attenuate with depth in a lower half-spae at ( ν x) < 0. Only attenuating with depth partial waves, as being physially reasonable, will be onsidered further.. Six-dimensional formalism. Following [], a more general representation for the partial wave than (.), will be onsidered: v ( x ) e (.) where x = irν x is the dimensionless omplex oordinate, v ( x ) is an unknown vetor funtion, and the exponential multiplier in (.) orresponds to propagation of the plane

3 wave front along the diretion n with the phase speed. Substituting representation (.) into Eq. Diret analysis of system (.) is rather diffiult, and redution to the first-order system an simplify it. The existene of the nontrivial solution of Eqs. 8 Equation (5.5) is known as the dispersion equation despite the fat, that the phase speed determined by this equation does not depend upon the wave number, or the wave frequeny.. Surfae waves of non-rayleigh type in transversely isotropi media. Let the unit vetors e k, k =,, form an orthogonal basis in R, and vetor e is normal to the Πν -basal plane of a transversely isotropi medium. This ensures that vetor e and ν oinide. The orresponding elastiity tensor has the following omponents: (.) where 44 = ( ) and the elastiity tensor is assumed to be positive-definite. (.), was obtained in [] by appliation of the three dimensional omplex formalism. It an be shown, that Eq. (.) has the unique positive root in the interval 0; ( ) ρ. Combining Eqs. (5.) with (.) and substituting the orresponding values of the elastiity onstants and the phase speed into Eqs. (.0), (4.8), we arrive to PROPOSITION..
