Utah State softball (16-5) is set for its first home series of the 2017 season this weekend, as it hosts UNLV (16-9). The Aggies and Rebels will open the series on Friday, March 17, at 3 p.m. The weekend will continue on Saturday, March 18, at 3 p.m., followed by a Noon game on Sunday, March 19. FOLLOW ALONG All regular-season home and Mountain West games will continue to be broadcast as a USU Athletics Production on the Mountain West Network. All video feeds will be available live and in archive form at utahstateaggies.tv. Live stats and play-by-play information will be available through GameTracker, while updates will also be provided through the team s social media outlets. Links to each option will be available online prior to every game PROMOTIONS Utah State softball will sponsor several in-game promotions through the 2017 season. At the conclusion of every Friday game, kids in attendance will have the opportunity to run the bases. Saturday games will feature $2 hot dogs from the concession stand, along with post-game autographs. During Sunday games, the Athletics department will sponsor softball bingo. For the team s two weekday home games, the first 50 fans in attendance will recieve a free small popcorn. Additional single-game promotions will be highlighted throughout the season. BARK IN THE PARK Friday s home-opener will mark Utah State s first Bark in the Park. Always a dog-friendly field, the Aggies want to give a special welcome to our four-legged friends as they take on UNLV at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field. The Rebels played in five preseason tournaments, three of which were hosted by UNLV. Most recently, UNLV went 3-2 at the Rebel Classic, where it defeated DePaul, New Mexico State and Portland State. The Rebels return six starters and 10 total letterwinners from last year s team that went on the year with an 8-16 Mountain West record. Junior outfielder Janine Petmecky leads UNLV at the plate, where she is batting.342 with a team-high 26 hits. Junior first baseman Alyssa Navarro is tops defensively, with 151 putouts. The Rebels have played five pitchers this season, but senior Morgan Ettinger leads the group with a 12-4 individual record and a 2.25 ERA. As a team, UNLV is batting.276, while combining for a 2.80 ERA and allowing 190 hits and 93 runs. Lisa Dodd is in her fifth season as the head coach of the Rebel program, where she has an overall record of The series between Utah State and UNLV dates back to The teams spent five years together in the Big West before meeting back up when Utah State joined the Mountain West for the 2014 season. UNLV holds the slight edge over the Aggies, leading the all-time series, Last season, the two teams met in Las Vegas, where the Aggies swept the three-game series against the Rebels. ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM Utah State has always seen success on its home field. All-time, Utah State is in home-opening games. The Aggies are 2-1 in home-openers in Steve Johnson s tenure, and are 6-3 in the first home series of each season since his first year in Utah State will play 15 games at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field this season, with four Mountain West series, along with a doubleheader against Utah Valley and a single game against BYU. EARLY IN THE LEAGUE Since joining the Big West in 1991, Utah State is 9-17 in the first conference games of the season. Now in their fourth year in the Mountain West, the Aggies are 3-0 in the conference-openers. This will be the third time that Utah State and UNLV have played each other in the conference-opening series, as the teams did so in Big West play in 1992 and THE HOTTEST START YET After going 16-4 to start the season, this year s Utah State team has secured the best 20-game start in school history. The new best topped the previous 20-game start record of 15-5 set by the 1986 squad. It only took Utah State 13 games to reach double-figure wins, doing so the quickest since 1986, when it also took 13 games. The 1978 squad holds the record for getting to 10 wins, doing so in 12 games. The Utah State team has recorded double-digit wins in all but two seasons in program history. LEADING THE NATION TO THIRD Five weeks into the season, Utah State is leading all NCAA teams in triples per game. With 12 triples on the year, the Aggies are averaging 0.57 per game. Just 21 games into the season, Utah State is just two triples short of last year s total. The 1981 team holds the program record with 26 triples on the season. Individually, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo leads the team and Mountain West, while ranking seventh in the nation, with four triples on the season. Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke and freshman outfielder Riley Plogger follow her with three each, which ranks 20th nationally. STEALING A SPOT IN THE RECORD BOOK While Utah State continues to rack up the stolen base numbers, two particular players stand out. Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke leads the team with 16 steals on the year. Combined with her 26 from the two previous seasons, Clarke is now the all-time record holder at Utah State with 42 stolen bases in her career. She set the single-season record a year ago, with 25. Her 16 this season also tie for fourth-place on the single-season record list. Joining Clarke on the record lists is sophomore outfielder Mia Maher. Maher is a perfect 14-of-14 on stolen bases this season, which ties for sixth on the single-season record list. With 10 steals as a freshman a year ago, Maher ranks ninth on the career stolen base record list with 24. As a team, Utah State has tallied 54 stolen bases this season. The program record is 67 in a year, set by the 1981 team. The Aggies had seven stolen bases against Siena, which set a new single-game record. Utah State Softball Notes 2 March 15, 2017

3 DEDICATED TO THE CAUSE Softball parents travel notoriously well to attend games, but among those in attendance at this weekend s series against UNLV are two moms who will travel a combined 12,706 miles to Logan. Senior second baseman Kylie-Rose Dickson s family will travel from Wailuku, Hawaii, a 2,959-mile trip. Freshman catcher Allanah Alvarado s mother, Jennifer, has been in the United States on a three-week trip from Rossmoyne, Western Australia, 9,747 miles from Logan. She attended the Aggies tournaments in St. George and Cedar City, and will conclude her trip after this weekend s series. TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN WEST Utah State continues to lead the conference in several categories. The Aggies hold the top position in two of the three major categories, as the team leads the way in ERA (2.23) and fielding percentage (.971). Utah State is also tops in triples (12), stolen bases (54),. The team has also allowed the fewest runs (65) and doubles (18), while posting a conference-low opposing batting average (.236) and committing the fewest errors (17). Individually, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo leads the league in triples (4), while senior 2B/3B Victoria Saucedo has hit the most home runs (7) and junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke leads in stolen bases (16). MAKING THEIR MARK Along with high ranks among the Mountain West, Utah State also continues to climb the national rankings. This week, Utah State leads the NCAA in triples per game (0.57) and ranks seventh in stolen bases per game (2.57). Additionally, Utah State is 19th in slugging percentage (.507), 20th in batting average (.334), 37th in winning percentage (.762), 39th in fielding percentage (.937) and 45th in earned run average (2.23). At the individual level, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo is seventh in triples (4), followed by junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke and freshman outfielder Riley Plogger in 20th (3). Senior 2B/3B Victoria Saucedo ranks 26th nationally with seven home runs. Sophomore outfielder Mia Maher and Clarke both rank in stolen bases per game at seventh (0.82) and 18th (0.76), respectively. MULTI MULTI-BASE HITS The Aggies had a weekend of hot hitting at the Beehive Classic in Cedar City last week. In the five games, Utah State tallied 29 extra-base hits with 16 doubles, six triples and seven home runs. Senior 2B/3B Victoria Saucedo led the team with 22 total bases in the tournament, behind three home runs and two doubles. Freshman outfielder Riley Plogger had 19 total bases, as she hit three doubles, two triples and her first-career home run. Three players hit two triples on the weekend, while junior catcher Brina Buttacavoli hit a team-high four doubles. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYONE In the Beehive Classic last weekend, Utah State freshmen Allanah Alvarado and Riley Plogger both hit their first-career home runs. Alvarado gt in the home run column with just the second hit of her young career in USU s 13-4 win over Wagner. Plogger s out-of-the-park blast came later that game, as her home run ended the game as she put the Aggies up by more than eight runs. KEEPING IT CLEAN Utah State s defense is currently leading the Mountain West with a.973 fielding percentage. The team has tallied 423 putouts while committing a conference-low 17 errors. Junior catcher Brina Buttacavoli, junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke and freshman outfielder Riley Plogger are three of 20 players in the conference who have not made any errors on the field this season. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS Utah State softball has been picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league s nine coaches. The fourth-place selection is the highest preseason ranking the Aggies have had in their years in the Mountain West, and the highest overall since the team s fourth-place ranking in the 1994 Big West preseason poll. Fresno State was picked to repeat as conference champions, followed by San Diego State and San José State in the top three. Nevada was picked to finish fifth, while Colorado State and Nevada tied for sixth place. New Mexico followed in eighth, while Boise State rounded out the poll. LAST TIME OUT Utah State posted a 4-1 record at the Southern Utah-hosted Beehive Classic last weekend, as the Aggies recorded wins against Southern Utah (12-1 (6)) and Wagner (13-4 (5), 14-5), while splitting a pair of games against Bradley (7-5, 0-4). Utah State utilized four pitchers on the weekend, where senior April Brown led the team with a 2-0 record. Together, the four posted a 3.39 ERA with 16 strikeouts and 11 walks. At the plate, junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke led the Aggies, batting.600 (12-of-20). On the weekend, the team combined for 29 extra-base hits, with 16 doubles, six triples and seven home runs. Senior first baseman Paxton Provost was tops defensively with 23 putouts. UP NEXT Utah State faces a split week of competition next week. The Aggies will host Utah Valley for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 22. Action against the Wolverines will begin at 1 p.m. The team will then return to the road to continue Mountain West play in a three-game series at Nevada. Utah State will open the weekend against the Wolf Pack on Friday, March 24, at 5 p.m. (MT), with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, March 25 and a Noon meeting on Sunday, March 26. From Salt Lake International Airport: Take I-80 East out of the airport to 215 North, which will run into I-15 North. Follow I-15 North to exit 362 (Highway 89-91) at Brigham City. Follow Highway 89 into Logan, where it becomes Main Street. Stay on Main Street until you reach 1000 North and turn right. Follow 1000 North east until it runs into the campus. 22 STEVE JOHNSON Head Coach Fourth Season Wartburg College 97 USU Record: (.424) Career Record: Same Steve Johnson is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah State softball team, after being named the ninth head coach of the Aggie program on June 26, Johnson led the 2016 team to the program s best record in 20 years. The Aggies finished the year with a record, the best team record since 1996, while going in Mountain West action. The Aggies 12 Mountain West wins are the most conference victories since the 1996 team posted a Big West record. Utah State finished tied for third in the conference, their highest finish since joining the Mountain West and the highest overall conference finish since This is also the first time since the 1996 campaign that Utah State finished with a record above.500. Over the course of the 2016 season, the Aggies set new program records in runs scored (281), doubles (86), home runs (50), total bases (701), RBIs (259), slugging percentage (.492) and on base percentage (.383). On an individual level, three players set or tied single-season records. Outfielder Sarah Chow hit a program-best eight triples on the year, while outfielder Jazmin Clarke shattered the stolen base record with 25 during the season. Third baseman Victoria Saucedo tied the home run record, hitting 12 during her junior season. Three Aggies earned all-mountain West honors in 2016, as Clarke, Saucedo and outfielder/pitcher Alleyah Armendariz were each named to the second team. Additionally, 12 members of the USU roster earned academic all-conference honors and five were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In 2015, Johnson coached the Aggies to a record, going in Mountain West action. The Aggies ended the season on a threegame winning streak in a sweep over Boise State. Overall, the Aggies hit.254 on the year, ending the season with 439 hits and 252 runs scored. The Aggies also saw an increase in doubles from 58 in 2014 to 81. As a team, Utah State set two then-records from the plate in 2015, with 229 RBIs and 40 home runs. Individually, outfielder Hailey Froton bested her own single-season RBI record (48), while claiming the career record (132), while Armendariz tied the single-season home run record, hitting 12. Four Utah State players earned all-mountain West honors following the 2015 campaign, as Froton and pitcher Noelle Johnson earned first-team honors and Armendariz and Chow were named to the second team. The four all-conference recognitions are the most for a Utah State team since 1993, when four players earned all-big West honors. Off the field, five student-athletes received academic all-mountain West honors, while three were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In his first season at Utah State in 2014, Johnson led the team to an record. Included in that record was a 6-18 conference record in Utah State s first year in the Mountain West. 23 helping Noelle Johnson to break the USU single-season strikeout record (218). Johnson also coached Froton to the then-single-season RBI record with 41. The Aggies ended the 2014 season with a.251 batting average, improving from.237 the previous year. USU hit 32 home runs while advancing to 537 total bases. Along with Saucedo s all-conference honors, nine players earned academic all-mountain West accolades, while four were named Mountain West Scholar Athletes. Johnson took over the Utah State program after five years at Auburn as the assistant head coach. Working primarily with the Tigers hitters, slappers and infielders, Johnson helped Auburn advance to three Southeastern Conference Tournaments and NCAA Regional appearances in four years. In 2011, Auburn was ranked in both the ESPN and NFCA top 25 polls, spending 12 weeks in the NFCA poll and reaching a high of No. 21. Auburn also registered its first-ever series win over a top-five team, taking two-of-three games from No. 4 Georgia. The 2012 Tigers hit the most home runs (46) since the 2005 squad hit a program-record 68. Johnson made his head coaching debut at the Division II level, spending the seasons at UNC Pembroke, where he compiled a record. Johnson led the Braves to a overall record in 2008 and the Peach Belt Conference Championship, going 17-1 in league action. He also led UNC Pembroke to the program s first ever NCAA Region- al appearance in 2008, earning NFCA South Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors in That season, the Braves set or tied 33 school records, including most wins in a season (46) and most conference wins (17). UNCP players earned a total of six all-region awards and three All-America honors under Johnson s tutelage in While at Pembroke, Johnson s teams broke 73 school records and had 39 players earn Peach Belt Academic Honor Roll accolades. Prior to his stint at UNC Pembroke, Johnson served as an assistant coach at South Dakota State from Johnson began his professional coaching career as the head coach at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from Johnson earned his undergraduate degree in U.S. history and secondary education from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, graduating cum laude in Johnson earned a graduate degree in athletic administration from South Dakota State University in A native of West Des Moines, Iowa, Johnson is married to the former Heather Wesemen and the couple has one daughter, Collette (2).
