A REMARK ON APPROXIMATION WITH POLYNOMIALS AND GREEDY BASES PABLO M. BERNÁ, ANTONIO PÉREZ arxiv: v1 [ath.fa] 5 Mar 2019 ABSTRACT. We investigate properties of the -th error of approxiation by polynoials with constant coefficients D (x) and with odulus-constant coefficients D (x) introduced by Berná and Blasco (2016) to study greedy bases in Banach spaces. We characterize when liinf D (x) and liinf D (x) are equivalent to x in ters of the deocracy and superdeocracy functions, and provide sufficient conditions ensuring that li D (x)=li D (x)= x, extending previous very particular results. 1. INTRODUCTION Let(X, ) be a real Banach space and let B=(e n ) n=1 be a sei-noralized (Schauder) basis ofxwith biorthogonal functionals(e n ) n=1, that is: (i) There exist a,b>0 such that a e n, e n bfor every n N, (ii) e k (e n)=δ kn for every k,n N, (iii) The sequence of projections P :X X given by P (x)= e n(x)e n, x X n=1 satisfy li n P (x) x =0 for every x X. In this case, the basis constant of B is K b := sup P <. N We say that B is onotone whether K b = 1. Along the paper we will refer to every such B siply as a basis. Of course, as increases P (x) offers a good approxiation of x by linear cobinations of -eleents of the basis, but it is natural to ask whether a suitable (and systeatic) rearrangeent can provide better convergence rates. A natural proposal is the Thresholding Greedy Algorith (TGA) introduced by S. V. Konyagin and V. N. Telyakov ([10]): given x X we first consider the rearranging function ρ :N Nsatisfying that if j < k then either e ρ( j) (x) > e ρ(k) (x) or e ρ( j) (x) = e ρ(k) (x) and ρ( j)<ρ(k). 2 2 PABLO M. BERNÁ, ANTONIO PÉREZ greedy su of x is then G (x) = e ρ( j) (x)e ρ( j) = e k (x)e k, j=1 k Λ (x) where Λ (x) = {ρ(n) : n } is the greedy set of x with cardinality. Related to this, S. V. Konyagin and V. N. Telyakov defined in [10] the concepts of greedy and quasi-greedy bases. Definition 1.1. We say that B is quasi-greedy if there exists a positive constant C q such that x G (x) C q x, x X, N. P. Wojtaszczyk proved in [12] that quasi-greediness is equivalent to the convergence of the algorith, that is, B is quasi-greedy if and only if li x G (x) =0, x X. + Definition 1.2. We say that B is greedy if there exists a positive constant C such that where x G (x) Cσ (x), x X, N, (1) } σ (x,b) X = σ (x) := inf{ x a n e n : a n F,A N, A =. n A Konyagin and Telykov [10] showed that, although every greedy basis is quasigreedy, the converse does not holds (see also [1, Section 10.2]). They also characterize greedy bases as those which are unconditional and deocratic. To define the last notion we have to introduce soe notation. For each finite subset A Nand every scalar sequence ε =(ε n ) with ε n =1for each n N (fro now on we will write ε =1, for siplicity) let us denote 1 A := e n and 1 εa := ε n e n. n A n A As usual, A stands for the cardinal of A. We then define the deocracy functions as h l ()= and the superdeocracy functions as h l ()= inf 1 εa, h r ()= sup 1 εa ( N). A =, ε =1 A =, ε =1 inf 1 εa, h r()= sup 1 εa ( N). A =, ε =1 A =, ε =1 Definition 1.3. We say that B is deocratic (resp. superdeocratic) if there exists C > 0 such that h r () C h l () ( resp. h r () C h l () ) for every N. Another characterization of greedy bases was ore recently provided by Ó. Blasco and the first author by eans of the best -th error in the approxiation using polynoials of constant (resp. odulus-constant) coefficients: D (x,b) X = D (x)=inf{ x α1 A : α R, A N, A =} D (x,b) X = D (x)=inf{ x α1 εa : α R, A N, A =, ε =1} Theore 1.4. [2, Corollary 1.8] Let B be a basis of a Banach space X. The following assertions are equivalent: (i) B is greedy; (ii) There is C> 0 such that x G (x) CD (x) for every x Xand N.
A REMARK ON APPROXIMATION WITH POLYNOMIALS AND GREEDY BASES 3 (iii) There is C>0 such that x G (x) CD (x) for every x X and N. The striking feature of this theore copared to (1) is that, while li σ (x) = 0 for every x X, the ters D (x) and D (x) do not necessarily converge to zero if x 0. Indeed, we have the following exaples: [2, Theore 3.2],[3, Theore 1.4] If X = H is a (separable) Hilbert space and B is an orthonoral basis, then li D (x)= li D (x)= x, for every x H. (2) [2, Proposition 3.4] If X=l p (1< p< ) and B is the canonical basis, then li D (1 B )= li + + D (1 B)= 1 B, for every finite B N. (3) In the present paper, we ai to delve into this aspect. Let us briefly explain the structure of the paper. In Section 2 we show that D (x) and D (x) do not converge to zero as + for any x 0. In Section 3 we prove the ain result of the paper (Theore 3.2), naely a characterization of those bases B for which there is a positive constant c>0 such that c x liinf + D (x) lisup D (x) x + for every x X, in ters of the deocracy and superdeocracy functions. We also provide a quite general condition ensuring that li + D (x)= x for every x X. In Section 4 we deal with the notion of alost-greedy bases. We study how this property can be also characterized in ters of polynoials of constant or odulus-constant coefficients, extending a recent result of S. J. Dilworth and D. Khurana in [6]. Let us point out [1] as our basic reference for notation and fundaental results on greedy basis. 2. THE LIMIT OF ERRORS D (x) AND D (x) IS NONZERO Since D (x) D (x) x for every N and every x X, it is only necessary to study lower bounds of D (x). Proposition 2.1. Let B =(e n ) n=1 be a basis of a Banach spacex. Then, for every x X 1 sup e 4K n(x) liinf b n N D (x). Proof. Let x X. Note that for every finite set A N, α R and ε = 1 it holds that e n x α1 εa sup (x α1 ηa) n N e n sup n N e n(x α1 εa ) sup n N e n (x) α. 2K b 2K b Let us also fix δ > 0 and n 0 N with the property that e n (x) δ for every n n 0. If A satisfies A >n 0, then there is j Awith j > n 0, and so x α1 εa e j (x) α 2K b α δ 2K b.
4 PABLO M. BERNÁ, ANTONIO PÉREZ In particular, cobining both lower estiations we get that for A >n 0 x α1 εa α δ +sup n N e n (x) α e sup n(x) δ. 4K b n N 4K b Therefore, for >n 0 D (x) sup e n (x) δ. n N 4K b 3. MAIN RESULT: EQUIVALENCE WITH THE NORM The issue of when liinf D(x) (resp. liinf D (x)) is equivalent to x is going to be deterined by the behaviour of the superdeocracy functions (resp. deocracy functions), see Section 1 for the definitions. Along the present section we are going to focus on proving the results for superdeocracy case, naely for h l (), h r () and the error D (x). The arguents for the case h l (), h r and the error D (x) are copletely analogous. First of all, we recall a trivial estiates of the superdeocray functions for any basis: h l (k) K b h l (), h r (k) K b h r () for every k. These relations together with the trivial inequality h l () h r ()( N) yield that there are three possible cases: h l () and h r () are bounded. h l () is bounded and h r () + as +. h l (),h r () + as +. Definition 3.1. The functions h l () and h r() (resp. h l () and h r ()) are said to be coparable if they are both bounded or divergent to infinity. The ain result of the section is the following theore. Theore 3.2. Let B be a basis of a Banach spacex. The following assertions are equivalent: (i) There is a positive constant c>0 such that c x liinf + D (x) lisupd(x) x for every x X. + (ii) h l () and h r () are coparable. Moreover, if B is onotone and h l () + as +, then li + D (x)= x. (4) (The theore also holds if we replace D (x), h l (), h r () respectively by D (x), h l (), h r ().) Before going into the proof let us ake a few observations: Fro Theore 3.2 we recover (2) and (3). Indeed, if H is a (separable) Hilbert space and B is an orthonoral basis ofhthen h l ()=h l ()=1/2. On the other hand, forx=l p with 1 p< and B is the canonical basis, it holds that h l ()=h l ()=1/p. For X=L p [0,1] we have that the Haar basis B is onotone (see [7, Theore 5.18]) and satisfies h l () = h l() 1 1/p for 1 p <. Hence, it satisfies that li D (x) = li D (x)= x for every x X.
A REMARK ON APPROXIMATION WITH POLYNOMIALS AND GREEDY BASES 5 If B is superdeocratic (resp. deocratic), then it satisfies Theore 3.2.(ii) (resp. Theore 3.2.(ii) for h r () and h l ()). However, there are easy exaples showing that converse is not true. For instance, the canonical basis ofl 2 1 l 4 satisfies that h l ()=h l () 1/4 and h r ()=h r () 1/2. Exaple of basis not satisfying Theore 3.2.(ii): Let us consider X = l 1 and let B = (x n ) n=1 be the difference basis, which in ters of the canonical basis (e n) n=1 is given by x 1 = e 1, x n = e n e n 1, n=2,3,... By [4, Lea 8.1], it holds that h l ()=h l()=1and h r ()=h r()=2. Exaple of basis satisfying li D (x) = x for every x X, but liinf D (x) is not even equivalent to x : LetX=c be the space of convergent sequences and let B=(s n ) n=1 be the suing basis, defined as s n :=(0,...,0,1,1,...), n N. }{{} n 1 By [4, Lea 8.1] we know that h l () 1 and h r (), so Theore 3.2.(ii) does not hold. On the other hand, B is onotone and h l () h r () by the sae reference. Thus, li D (x)= x for every x X. Condition Theore 3.2.(ii) is not preserved for dual bases: If(e n ) n=1 is the canonical basis ofl 1, let us consider the sequence x n = e n (e 2n+1 + e 2n+2 )/2, n Nand the space X := span{x n : n N} l1. This is known as the Lindenstrauss space [8] and the sequence B =(x n ) n=1 is actually a onotone basis for X (see [11, pg 457]). In [4, Section 8.2] it is shown that h l (). On the other hand, in the sae reference it is proved that the dual space X with the corresponding dual basis B satisfies h l () 1and h r () ln() Proof of the ain result. Proposition 3.3. Let B be a basis of a Banach spacex. Then, sup liinf A N f inite, η =1 + D (1 ηa) (1+K b ) liinf + h l (), (5) sup li inf D (1 A ) (1+K b ) liinf h l(). (6) A N + + f inite Proof. We explain the arguent for (5), as the proof of (6) is copletely analogous with the obvious replaceents. Let us fix a finite set A Nand η {±1} A, and let us take λ R satisfying We can then find 0,n 0 N with the following properties: λ < liinf + D (1 ηa). (7) λ 1 ηa α1 εb for every α R, ε =1 and B N with B 0, A {1,...,n 0 }.
6 PABLO M. BERNÁ, ANTONIO PÉREZ Let C N be a finite set with C 0 + n 0. Then, 1 εc P n0 (1 εc )=1 εc where C := C\{1,...,n 0 }. Notice that C 0, so in particular λ 1 ηa 1 (ηa) (εc ) = 1 εc Id P n0 1 εc (1+K b ) 1 εc. Thus, we have the relation λ (1+K b ) liinf + hε l (). Taking supreus on λ according to (7) we conclude that li inf + D (1 ηa) (1+K b ) liinf + hε l (). Theore 3.4. Let B be a basis of a Banach space X. Assue that there is a constant C > 0 satisfying suph r (n) C suph l (n). n N n N Then, for every x X 1 C+ K b (1+C) x liinfd (x) lisup D (x) x. (8) Proof. Let us fix x X. We just have to show that the left hand-side of (8) holds. For, let 0<δ < 1 and 0,n 0 Nsuch that P n (x) x δ x for every n n 0, h r (n 0) C(1 δ)h l ( 0). Given α R, A N with A 0 + n 0 and ε {±1} A, we are going to establish two lower bounds for x α1 εa. Since A (n 0,+ ) 0 we can find n n 0 such that A (n,+ ) = 0. Thus, applying the operator Id P n to x α1 εa we have that x α1 εa 1 K b + 1 (Id P n)(x) α1 ε(a (n,+ )) 1 ( α h K b + 1 l ( 0 ) δ x ). (9) As A n 0 we can find n n 0 with A [1,n] = n 0, so that x α1 εa 1 K b ( Pn (x) α1 ε(a [1,n]) ) 1 K b ( x (1 δ) α h r (n 0 ) ) (10) 1 δ K b ( x C α h l ( 0 ) ) (11) Note that the lower estiations (9) and (11) are respectively increasing and decreasing linear functions f(t) and g(t) on t = α. Moreover these functions have a unique point of intersection t 0 > 0 which can be easily checked to satisfy Thus t 0 = x h l ( 0) (1 δ)(1+k b)+δ K b C(1 δ)(1+k b )+K b. (12) x α1 εa ax{ f( α ),g( α )} f(t 0 )=g(t 0 )= x 1+K b [ ] (1 δ)(1+kb )+δ K b δ. C(1 δ)(1+k b )+K b
A REMARK ON APPROXIMATION WITH POLYNOMIALS AND GREEDY BASES 7 Taking the infiu of x α1 εa on α R and A satisfying the conditions above, we deduce that [ ] li inf k + D k (x) inf D x (1 δ)(1+kb )+δ K b k (x) δ. k 0 +n 0 1+K b C(1 δ)(1+k b )+K b Finally, aking δ 0 + we get the desired conclusion. Proof of Theore 3.2. To check (i) (ii), note that using Proposition 3.3 we then deduce that sup h r()= sup 1 ηa N A N f inite, η =1 sup liinf A N f inite, η =1 + D (1 ηa ) (1+K b ) liinf + h l (). It is clear fro this inequality that h l () and h r () are then coparable. To see the converse (ii) (i), note first that if h l () and h r () are coparable, then there exists C> 0 such that sup h r () sup C h l () (13) N N and so Theore 3.4 applies. The second stateent of the theore follows also fro Theore 3.4 since B being onotone eans that K b = 1, and condition li h l ()=+ eans that (13) holds for every C>0. 4. ALMOST-GREEDINESS AND POLYNOMIALS WITH CONSTANT COEFFICIENTS Definition 4.1. Let B =(e n ) n=1 be a basis of a Banach space X. We say that B is alost-greedy if there exists a constant C> 0 such that where x G (x) C σ (x) σ (x,b) X = σ (x) := inf{ x e n (x)e n : A N, A =}. n A This notion was introduced by S. J. Dilworth, N. J. Kalton, D. Kutzarova and V. N. Telyakov in [5], together with two characterizations. First, that a basis is alost-greedy if and only if it is quasi-greedy and deocratic. The second characterization is given in the next theore. Theore 4.2 ([5, Theore 3.3]). Let B be a basis of a Banach spacex. Then, B is alost-greedy if and only if for soe (resp. every) λ > 1, there exists a positive constant C λ such that Indeed, C λ 1 λ 1. x G [λ] (x) C λ σ (x), for every x X, N. As in the case of greedy basis, we can replace the error σ (x) by the -th error of approxiation by polynoials with constant (resp. odulus-constant) coefficients. Theore 4.3. Let B be a basis of a Banach space X and let λ > 1. The following assertions are equivalent: (i) B is alost-greedy. (ii) There is C>0 such that x G [λ] (x) C λ D (x) for every x Xand every N. (iii) There is C>0 such that x G [λ] (x) C λ D (x) for every x Xand every N.
8 PABLO M. BERNÁ, ANTONIO PÉREZ Proof. Iplication (i) (iii) (ii) are clear using Theore 4.2 and the inequalities σ (x) D (x) D (x). To show that (ii) (i) we follow the ideas fro the proof of Theore 4.2: using the hypothesis, we argue that B is deocratic and quasi-greedy. To see that it is deocratic, let N and A,B Nwith A =and B =[λ]. Let us consider a set E A,B with E =+[λ], let δ > 0 and consider the eleent x=1 A +(1+δ)1 E\A. Then, 1 A = x G [λ] (x) C λ D (x) C λ 1 B\A +(1+δ)1 B A. As δ > 0 is arbitrary, taking supreu over A and infiu over B we deduce that h r () C λ h l (λ) C λ K b h l (), where in the last inequality we have used the estiations entioned at the beginning of Section 2. Let show now that the basis B is quasi-greedy. For, take N and r N {0} such that [λr] <[λ(r+ 1)]. Then, x G (x) x G [λr] (x) + G [λr] (x) G (x). Note that G [λr] (x) G (x) contains at ost [λr]<λ suands of the for e n (x)e n, so that G [λr] (x) G (x) ( λ sup e n sup e n ) x. n N n N On the other hand, using the hypothesis Thus, the basis is quasi-greedy. x G [λr] (x) C λ D (x) C λ x. Recently, S. J. Dilworth and D. Khurana provided the following characterization of alostgreedy bases in the sae spirit of Theore 1.4. In order to present it we have to introduce soe notation: if A,B N are finite sets, we will write A<B if axa<inb. H (x) := inf{ x α1 A : α R, A =and either A<Λ (x) or A>Λ (x)} where recall that Λ (x) is the -th greedy set associated to x introduced in Section 1. Theore 4.4. [6] Let B be a basis of a Banach space X. Then, B is alost-greedy if and only if there exists C> 0 such that x G (x) C inf H n(x) for every x X and N. 1 n Inspiring on the previous theore, we can prove the following result which is again strinking as D (x) H (x) and so liinfh (x) x when h l () and h r () are coparable by Theore 3.2. Corollary 4.5. Let B be a basis of a Banach space X. Then, B is alost-greedy if and only if there exists C> 0 such that x G (x) CH (x) for every x X and N. (14) Proof. If B is quasi-greedy then 14 holds by Theore 4.4. To see the converse we use the aforeentioned characterization of alost-greedy bases as those being quasi-greedy and deocratic. The fact that B is quasi-greedy follows fro the hypothesis and the trivial inequality H (x) x. Let us show that B is deocratic. Let A,B N be finite subsets of cardinality, and take E N also with E = and oreover A < E and B < E. Fixed δ > 0 consider the eleents x=1 A +(1+δ)1 E and y=1 E +(1+δ)1 B. Then, 1 A = x 1 E = x G (x) CH (x) C x 1 A = C(1+δ) 1 E.
A REMARK ON APPROXIMATION WITH POLYNOMIALS AND GREEDY BASES 9 Analogously, 1 E = y 1 B = y G (y) CH (y) C y 1 E = C(1+δ) 1 B. Since δ > 0 was arbitraty, we conclude that h r () C 2 h l () for every N, and so the basis is deocratic. REFERENCES [1] F. ALBIAC AND N. J.
