The moel uner consieration consists of the isentropic Euler equations to escribe the gas flow couple to the AC powerflow equations. A compressor station is installe to control the gas pressure such that certain bouns are satisfie. A numerical case stuy is presente that showcases effects of fast changes in power eman on gas pipelines an necessary operator actions. Though renewal energy has been evelope in recent years with great potential, its intermittent an unpreictable nature raises the ifficulty to balance the energy prouction an consumption [5, 16]. Eike Fokken University of Mannheim fokken@uni-mannheim.e Simone Göttlich University of Mannheim goettlich@uni-mannheim.e Oliver Kolb University of Mannheim kolb@uni-mannheim.e A frequent proposal is to use gas turbine plants to compensate for suen rops in power of renewable sources because these plants are relatively flexible in comparison to coal or nuclear plants. It is esirable to have a joint optimal control framework for power an gas sector of the energy system to moel this compensation. So far only steay-state flow in the gas network has been consiere [3,16,18], which may be too coarse for several applications. Therefore, we focus on an optimal control strategy for the instationary gas network moel [1] couple to a power gri [] via compressor stations, see for example [6, 13, 15]. The mathematical founation for the gas-to-power coupling has been recently introuce in [4], where conitions for the well-poseness have been erive an prove. Optimal control problem The gas ynamics within each pipeline of the consiere gas networks are moele by the isentropic Euler equations, supplemente with suitable coupling an bounary conitions. For the power gri, we apply the wellknown powerflow equations. The coupling between gas an power networks at gas-riven power plants is moele by algebraic eman-epenent gas consumption terms. To react on the eman-epenent influences on the gas network, controllable evices as compressor stations are consiere within the gas network. The aim is to fulfill given state restrictions like pressure bouns whereas at the same time the entire fuel gas or power consumption of the compressor stations is to be minimize. The network uner consieration is similar to the one presenet in [4] an is epicte in Figure 1. In aition, there is now a compressor with a time-epenent
2 Eike Fokken et al. control ut, which is use to satisfy pressure bouns. The optimal control problem is to minimize compressor costs while satisfying power eman an gas ynamics: min ut compressor costs s.t. isentropic Euler equations Subsection.1 gas coupling conitions Subsection. compressor equation Subsection.3 powerflow equations Subsection.4 gas-power-coupling Subsection.5 pressure bouns. Mathematically, this is an instationary nonlinear optimization problem constraine by partial ifferential equations, see [7] for an overview. To solve the problem, we make use of a first-iscretize-then-optimize approach an apply the interior point solver IPOPT [14]. The necessary graient information with respect to all controllable evices is efficiently compute via optimality conitions. Then, the unerlying systems can be solve time-step-wise backwars in time, where the sparsity structure is exploite. We remark that the cost function is given in Subsection.3, while the bouns on the pressure are introuce as box constraints within the numerical optimization proceure in Section 3. Within the Subsections.1.5, we now escribe the constraints of the optimal control problem in etail an focus on the technical etails. Re noes are PQ/eman noes, green noes are generators PV noes an the blue noe is the slack bus also a generator, with gas consumption of the form εp = a + a 1 P + a P. The circle symbol inicates a compressor station. S4 S8 N3 S N S5.1 The isentropic Euler equations The gas network is moele by the isentropic Euler equations, which govern gas flow in each pipeline between noes, ρ q t + q pρ + q ρ x = Sρ, q, 1 where ρ is the ensity, q is the flow, pρ = κρ γ is the pressure function. In our example we use γ = 1 an κ = c = 34 m s, that is, the isothermal Euler equations with soun spee c. The Euler equations must be met for x l e an t, where l e is the length of the pipe. Furthermore, S is a source term, Sρ, q = λq e q q ρ, where λ is the solution to the Prantl-Colebrook formula, 1.51 = log 1 λ Req λ + k e e The Reynols number Re is given by Req = e η q with ynamic viscosity 5 kg η = 1 ms. The roughness k e an iameter e of the pipes are all the same in our example an given by k e = m, e = m.. Coupling at gas noes At the noes we use the usual Kirchhoff-type coupling conitions: The pressure is the same near the noe in all pipes connecte to it an the flows must a up to zero where the sign for inflow is positive, the sign for outflow negative, ingoing pipes p pipe = p noe, q pipe = outgoing pipes q pipe. a b The example gas network we are using is a small part of the GasLib-4 network [8]. In Table 1 the only remaining parameter, the length l e of each pipe, is gathere. Note that no length is given for the arc connecting S an S17, because only a compressor is situate between these noes.

Those arcs have time-epenent in- an outgoing pressure p in, p out an flux values q in, q out. In general, the two separate flux values allow the moelling of fuel gas consumption of the compressor station, whereas we will consier an external power supply for the compressor an therefore have q in = q out. The power consumption is moelle as a quaratic function of the power require for the compression process. Denoting this as function P p in t, q in t, p out t, q out t, our objective function in the optimal control problem is of the form T P p in t, q in t, p out t, q out tt. 3 Note that the power consumption oes not influence the network ynamics an is therefore only of interest for the optimization proceure. For our investigations below it is sufficient to know that the consumption an therewith the costs increase if the ratio p out /p in increases. For the etails of the power consumption moel, we refer to [15, Section 3..3]. The influence of the compressor station on the network ynamics is moelle by the control ut of the pressure ifference: p out t p in t = ut..4 Power moel For the power gri we use the AC powerflow equations, P k = Q k = N V k Vj Gkj cosφ k,j + B kj sinφ k,j, j=1 N V k Vj Gkj sinφ k,j B kj cosφ k,j, k=1 4 where P k, Q k are real an reactive power at noe k, V k is the voltage amplitue, φ k is the phase an φ k,j = φ k φ j an B kj, G kj are parameters of the transmission lines between noes k an j or of the noe k for B kk an G kk. Each noe is either the slack bus in our case N1; V an φ given, a generator bus N an N3; V an P given or a loa bus N4 through N9; P an Q given. All in all for N noes we get N equations for N variables. The consiere power gri is taken from the example case9 of the MATPOWER Matlab programming suite [17]. The corresponing parameters are gathere in Table..5 Coupling Table : Parameters of the power gri a Busses Noe G B N N N N N N N N N b Transmission lines Ege From To G B TL14 N1 N TL45 N4 N TL56 N5 N TL36 N3 N TL67 N6 N TL78 N7 N TL8 N8 N. 16. TL89 N8 N TL94 N9 N The last ingreient is a moel for converting gas to power at a gas power plant. In our example, it will be situate between the noes S4 an N1 an convert a gas flow ε into a real power output P accoring to εp = a + a 1 P + a P. 5 The flow ε must be iverte from the pipeline network, hence the coupling conition at noe S4 must be change to p in = p out, q in = q out + ε. 6
4 4 Eike Fokken et al. The etails of simulation of such a combine network an the treatment of all arising mathematical issues can be foun in [4]. We now showcase a concrete example. 3 Numerical results 3.1 Problem setup As alreay note, we consier a small part of the GasLib- 4 network from [] consisting of 7 pipelines with a total length of 15km. This network is extene by a compressor station an aitionally connecte to a power gri with 9 noes by a gas-to-power generator. For this couple gas-power network, we simulate a suen increase in power eman within the power gri an stuy its effect on the gas network. The consiere compressor station is suppose to compensate part of the pressure losses in the gas network such that a given pressure boun is satisfie all the time, while power consumption of the compressor is minimize. To complete the problem escription, the following initial an bounary conitions are given: P t an Qt at loa noes, P t an V t at generator noes, V t an φt at the slack bus, pt at S5, qt at S5, px,, qx, for all pipelines. More precisely, the initial conitions for the power network are given in Table 3. These remain constant over time except for the power eman at noe N5, which changes linearly between t = 1 hour an t = 1.5 hours from.9 p.u. to 1.8 p.u. for the real power an from.3 p.u. to.6 p.u. for the reactive power, see also Figure. Table 3: Initial bounary conitions of the power gri Noe P Q V φ N N N N4 - - N N6 - - N N8 - - N For the gas network the incoming pressure at S5 is fixe at 6bar, the outflow at S5 is fixe at q = 1 m3 s ρ A e, where ρ =.785 kg m 3 an A e = π e 4. The fuel consumption parameters we use in equation 5 are given by a =, a 1 = 5, a = 1. Further, the pressure at S5 is suppose to satisfy a lower pressure boun of 41bar, i.e., p S5 t 41bar for all times t, where we consier a time horizon of T = 1 hours. As we will see below, the compressor station between noes S an S17 will have to run at a certain time, i.e., ut >, to keep this pressure boun. In general, a solution to the escribe optimal control problem consists of the control ut an the entire network state for all times t, i.e., P t, Qt, V t, φt for all noes in the power gri, px, t, qx, t for all pipelines in the gas network, fulfilling the given moel equations an the pressure constraint. 3. Discretization an Optimization Schemes To solve the escribe optimal control problem, we follow a first-iscretize-then-optimize approach. The moel equations of the power gri only require a iscretization in time, which means that the given bounary conitions an the powerflow equations 4 hol for iscrete times t j = j t with t = 15 minutes an j {,..., 48} in our scenario. The iscretization of the isentropic Euler equations within the pipelines of the gas network aitionally requires a spatial gri here with gri sizes x e 1 km an an appropriate iscretization scheme. Here we apply an implicit box scheme [1], which allows the application of large time steps as t = 15 minutes for the consiere spatial gri. Consiering the isentropic Euler equations as a system of balance laws of the form y t + fy x = gy, the applie scheme reas Y n+1 j 1 + Y n+1 j = Y n j 1 + Y j n t x + t fy n+1 j fy n+1 j 1 gy n+1 j + gy n+1 j 1 The numerical approximation of the balance law is thought in the following sense: Y n j yx, t for x [ j 1 x, j + 1 x, t [ n t, n + 1 t..
5 Optimal control of compressor stations in a couple gas-to-power network 5 Together with the algebraic equations moelling the compressor station an the coupling an bounary conitions, the iscretization process results in a system of nonlinear equations for all state variables of the couple gas-power network. For simulation purposes, the entire iscretize system is solve with Newton s metho. Note that the system can be solve time-step per timestep an that we exploit the sparsity structure of the unerlying Jacobian matrices. So far we can only compute the state of the consiere gas-power network for a given compressor control ut an evaluate quantities of interest like the power consumption of the compressor station or the pressure constraint within the time horizon of the simulation. For the given time iscretization, the compressor costs 3 are approximate by the trapezoial rule an formally containe in Ju, yu below. Next, we want to solve the iscretize optimal control problem, i.e., to fin control values ut j such that the pressure constraint is satisfie, while the power consumption of the compressor is minimize. For this purpose, we apply the interior point optimization coe IPOPT [14] to the reuce iscretize optimal control problem. In aition to our simulation proceure to evaluate quantities of interest for a given control, IPOPT further requires graient information of those quantities with respect to the control. Base on the consiere iscretization, such information can be efficiently compute by an ajoint approach, which we briefly escribe in the following. Therefore, we consier the iscretize optimal control problem in the following abstract form: min Ju, yu s.t. u R Nu, y R Ny, moel equations: Eu, yu =, constraints: gu, y. The vector u contains all control variables here the compressor control ut j for all times t j = j t [, 4] an y contains all state variables of the couple gaspower network of all time steps t j. The mapping u yu is implicitly given by our simulation proceure. Thus, IPOPT oes not have to care about the moel equations formally summarize in Eu, y, but only about the further constraints gu, y an minimizing the objective function Ju, y. Accoringly, we nee to provie total erivatives of J an g with respect to u. In the following, we consier the computation of these erivatives only for the objective function, since the proceure is ientical for the constraints, an we follow the escription given in [1]. First of all, the chain rule yiels Ju, yu = Ju, yu u u + Ju, yu yu. 7 y u While the partial erivatives of J with respect to u an y can be irectly compute, the erivatives of the states y with respect to the control u are only implicitly given. Deriving the moel equations Eu, yu = yiels = Eu, yu = u u Eu, yu+ Eu, yu y u yu an therewith formally 1 u yu = Eu, yu Eu, yu. 8 y u Even though the partial erivatives on the right-hansie of 8 can be irectly compute, one woul have to solve Nu systems of linear equations here. Instea of that, we insert 8 into 7 an get Ju, yu = Ju, yu u u 1 y Ju, yu y Eu, yu } {{ } =ξ T Eu, yu. u With the so-calle ajoint state ξ as the solution of the ajoint equation T T Eu, yu ξ = Ju, yu, 9 y y we finally have Ju, yu = Ju, yu + ξt Eu, yu. 1 u u u It is the fact that 9 is a single linear system an has a special structure, which can be easily exploite see for instance [9, 11], which makes the computation of erivatives via the presente ajoint approach very efficient. Nevertheless note that for given control variables u one still has to solve the moel equations to get yu, before one may compute the graient information via 9 an 1.
6 6 Eike Fokken et al. 3.3 Results We first iscuss the simulation with inactive compressor. In the course of the simulation, ue to the increase in power eman at noe N5, the power eman at the slack bus rises as well an leas to increase fuel eman at noe S4. This increases the inflow into the gas network, as can be seen in Figure 3. Also the pressure in the final noe S5 ecreases an violates the pressure boun after approximately 4 hours, see Figure 4. After the optimization proceure, the compressor station compensates part of the pressure losses in the gas network such that the pressure boun is satisfie all the time. Since the power consumption of the compressor station is minimize within the optimization, the pressure constraint is active after roughly 4 hours see again Figure 4, i.e., the compressor station applies as little as possible energy. power [p.u.] flow [m 3 /s] pressure [bar] Fig. 3: Inflow at the noe S5. inflow at noe S5 lower pressure boun compressor inactive optimize result Fig. 4: Pressure at the noe S5. power [p.u.].4. P emane at N5 Q emane at N P at slack Q at slack Fig. : Power an reactive power at eman noe N5 above an the slack bus below. 4 Conclusion The propose optimization moel allows to preict pressure transgressions within a couple gas-to-power framework. Simulation an optimization tasks are efficiently solve by exploiting the unerlying nonlinear problem structure while keeping the full transient regime. References 1. M. Bana, M. Herty, an A.
