Physics in Darmstadt Physics in Darmstadt is organized in 3 institutes Applied Physics Condensed Matter Physics Nuclear Physics

Institute of Applied Physics New laser systems Semiconductor lasers Trapping and cooling of atoms (Bose Einstein Condensates) Quantum Cryptography

Institute of Condensed Matter Physics Soft matter: polymers, emulsions, gels, rubber, sediments, biologically produced materials etc. Structure on mesoscopic scales Understanding of macroscopic properties (viscosity, elasticity, electric conductivity etc.) and their dependence on external parameters (pressure, temperature) in terms of the microscopic structure

Institute of Nuclear Physics Nuclear Structure Nuclear Astrophysics Accelerator Physics Quantum Chaos Heavy Ion Physics (GSI/FAIR, LHC)

Superconducting Darmstadt Electron Linear Accelerator (S-DALINAC) Superconducting cavities: field gradients > 5 MV/m Energy tunable between 2 and 130 MeV Polarized source Built largely in the frame of PhD and MSc projects

1st example of an IREP project: Measurement and simulation of a neutron detector ball Kinematics of an electron scattering coincidence experiment Examples of spectra

1st example of an IREP project: Measurement and simulation of a neutron detector ball Measure electron scattering on nuclei with magnetic spectrometer Measure neutron decay from excited states in coincidence Position sensitive detector system Scattered electrons Ball of liquid scintillator detectors covering a large solid angle Target

1st example of an IREP project: Measurement and simulation of a neutron detector ball Gamma/neutron separation Possible with digital electronics? Measure response with gamma and neutrons sources Simulate with Monte Carlo Codes (GEANT4)

2nd example of an IREP project: Wavelet analysis of nuclear giant resonanecs Giant resonances: collective excitations of the nucleus High-energy resolution measurements show fine structure How to extract the physics information from this fine structure?

2nd example of an IREP project: Wavelet analysis of nuclear giant resonanecs Wavelet functions Wavelet coefficients

Wavelet Scale (MeV) Counts (x10 ) 3 2nd example of an IREP project: Wavelet analysis of nuclear giant resonances Characteristic scales 208 Pb(e,e ) E o = 50 MeV = 93 o Power Spectrum Wavelet Power (a.u.) Excitation Energy (MeV)

How can I find an IREP project in physics?
