6 Newton s 1 st law of Motion Inertia: tendency of an object to resist change in motion EX: test dummies, they are moving because the car is moving, when the car stops fast (because it crashes) the dummies keep moving until they crash into the steering wheel or windshield

7 Newton s First Law of Motion Newton s first law of motion: an object at rest will remain at rest An object in motion will remain in motion if the net force on an object is zero, an object remains at rest; if the object is moving, it continues to move in a straight line with constant speed IN OTHER WORDS: If the net force on an object is zero, the velocity of the object does not change The motion of a an object only changes when there are unbalanced forces acting on it

8 Newton s First Law of Motion Newton s first law of motion: if the net force on an object is zero, an object remains at rest; if the object is moving, it continues to move in a straight line with constant speed

9 Newton s first law of motion The size of the force needed to cause a change depends on the object s mass Imagine trying to stop a bicycle moving towards you at 10 mph Imagine stopping a car coming towards you at 10mph The car has 100 times more mass and you need a greater net force to stop it

10 Newton s Second Law of Motion Acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the force applied F= (mass) x (acceleration) F=ma Unbalanced forces cause an object to speed up or slow down More mass requires more force to move it

11 Newton s Third Law of Motion Newton s third law of motion: For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
