17 Continental Drift: Continents have moved over the earth s surface during geological time. First proposed by German astronomer / meteorologist Alfred Wegener circa Highly controversial; ridiculed, esp. in U.S. Finally accepted by mainstream geology in 1960s. Alfred Wegener
