1 GEOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF NEW JERSEY Fall Newsletter 2013 GANJ XXX Igneous Processes During the Assembly and Break- Up of Pangaea: Northern New Jersey and New York City Annual Conference and Field Trip October 11 th and 12 th, 2013 Campus Center - Green Dolphin Lounge College of Staten Island/CUNY, Staten Island, New York In 2013, the Geological Association of New Jersey (GANJ) will present its thirtieth (30th) annual conference and field trip. Despite the old admonishment to never trust anyone over thirty (30) we trust you will find a great program and field trip has been put together for this year. As noted in the Spring newsletter, we will discuss and see igneous rocks of New York City and northern New Jersey and how they mark tectonic events such as terrane accretion and separation. Speakers for this year are experts on the igneous rocks of northern New Jersey and New York City. They will discuss the geologic details of many of the familiar features in this area, such as the Staten Island serpentinite, the Palisades Sill, and the Watchung Mountains. Our keynote speaker is Jeffrey Steiner, Ph.D., of the City College of New York (CCNY). Dr. Steiner will be speaking on the source of the Palisades Diabase and the Orange Mountain Basalt. Following Dr. Steiner s presentation will be GANJ s annual dinner and business meeting with the election of GANJ officers for The dinner and business meeting will be in the Campus Center Park Café. Saturday s field trip has stops on Staten Island and in northern New Jersey. We will see serpentinite on Staten Island, features of the famous Palisades Sill by the Hudson River, enjoy the view of the New York City skyline from the First Watchung Mountain (Orange Mountain Basalt) while having lunch, see the Preakness Basalt (Second Watchung Mountain), and do some collecting at the renowned New Street Quarry in Paterson, NJ (Orange Mountain Basalt). If you plan to collect, please bring eye protection, boots (no open-toed shoes) and hard hats. Information on the meeting and field trip is also available on the web at Please note that you may register for the meeting online at Directions to the College of Staten Island/CUNY and the Campus Center Green Dolphin Lounge, information on parking, and information on accommodations in the area are on Page 7. Professional Development/Continuing Education Credits If attendance at the GANJ annual meeting is considered by your school or other organization as an acceptable professional development activity, GANJ will provide annual meeting certificates of attendance. Four (4) hours will be credited for the Friday presentations and six (6) hours for Saturday s field trip. If you will need a certificate of attendance, note this with your registration form. 1
2 GANJ XXXI The study of geology in urban areas is being discussed as the theme for GANJ XXXI in If you are interested in contributing or have suggestions for presentations or field trip stops, please contact Nurdan Aydin, GANJ President- Elect (naydin@njcu.edu). Meeting sponsorship GANJ invites support of the annual meeting through sponsorship ($ to $500.00). Sponsors receive recognition in the proceedings volume (1/2 page, $250.00; full page, $500.00) and on the GANJ web site for a year. More important is the opportunity to support geologic education in New Jersey. If interested, please contact a board member. Advertisements GANJ also accepts advertisements from geologically-oriented entities (e.g., universities, environmental consulting firms and laboratories, well drilling firms, etc.). For $15.00, a copy of your business card will be included in the annual meeting proceedings. If interested, please contact a GANJ board member. Register and purchase guidebooks by credit card online In addition to registration, you may also purchase guidebooks from the GANJ web site.
