They include two species - Protitan major sp. nov. (V ) and Protitan cf. P. robustus which represented by a left lower jaw with p3 m3 as well as broken c1 and p2, a right lower jaw with p3 m3 of same indi2 vidual (V 13805). 6 4 : 339 Type A fragmentary right upper jaw with P4 M3 (V 13802). Referred specimen An isolated right P2 (V 13803) and broken left DP3 DP4 (V 13804). Locality and horizon Nearby Lumeiyi Village. Lunan County, Yunnan Province ;Lower part of Middle Eocene Lumeiyi Formation. Diagnosis A species of Protitan larger than other Known species of the genus, length of M1 M3 being mm. Etymology The species name shows it is the largest species of the genus so far Known. Remarks The described upper molars, especially the last two ones, are longer than wide, the size of which is larger than those of Metatelmatheriinae and smaller than Embolotheriinae in general, indicating that the material may belong to Epimanteoceratinae ( Granger and Gregory, 1943). There are at least ten genera within the last subfamily. Of them the Lumeiyi upper cheek teeth are close to those of Protitan mainly in having no hypocone (tetartocone) or hypocone ridge on P4. The size, however, is larger than any species else. So the Lumeiyi specimen should represent a new species2 Protitan major, the largest species of the genus.
