3 ISRAEL GIS for 2008 Integrated Population Census GIS was used as a main infrastructure for the 2008 Israeli integrated census of population The Integrated Census is based on geocoded demographic data from administrative sources, for the whole population, combined with socioeconomic data collected in sample surveys that also served for producing updated population estimates. Since the Geographic Infrastructure covers the entire country s land it has supported field work operations. 5 Israel Police Quality of Life Hot spots The Israeli Police has adopted a model for policing which includes hot spots policing strategy at street segments. Up to 10 segments were chosen in each police station based on lowrisk, highvolume events calls for service on quality of life problems, such as noise, parking, vandalism, and the like. The geographic model is simple: tracking the smallest geofenced area that produces a maximum number of incidents, as a function of the total area under the control of the police station. The targets: cooling down hot spot of quality of life and decreasing events frequency, both in order to improve the citizens quality of life. The map shows two hotspots in a particular Israeli city: The hotspot on the right marks a park with juvenile antisocial behavior The hotspot on the left is situated on a main street with noise problems Two parameters: total number of events, and the segment length This nationwide initiative uses advanced measurement and analysis system called Mifne to allow police officers to instantaneously detect and analyze hotspots.

6 Mifne System uses advanced geocoding maps that allow realtime analysis. Israel Police Quality of Life Hot spots Hotspots model :Data Analysis Using Mifne System For each street segment, police officers are provided with the major social concerns that affect the hotspot, along with possible solutions. The street segment hotspots are defined as those microareas with the largest concentration of incidents, thus providing the police a focused approach with achievable targets. For example: in a certain city, 1.4% of all street segments produced 22.5% of all events in that city. Solutions range from patrol, through informal advice and remedies using partnerships with municipal authorities. 7 ISRAEL KKLJNF: Using GIS to Manage Sustainable Natural and Planted Forests in Israel KKLJNF manage forests in Israel that provide important ecosystem services which benefit Israel s residents. GIS is a decision support system used to maintain, plan and protect the forests of Israel. Each forester on the ground is equipped with a GISenabled laptop. GIS, together with GPS and maps, significantly improves the sustainable management of the forests. This system provides foresters access to a rich database, consisting of rasters and vectors. Foresters use these tools to query, as well as to collect and manipulate required data.
