We believe Banks Peninsula can be developed into an internationally significant UNESCO Geopark, celebrating distinct indigenous values, the land itself and all our Banks Peninsula stories. For Banks Peninsula we wish to develop the Geopark in a holistic sense, incorporating and blending elements of geology, flora and fauna, archaeology, oral traditions, mātauranga maori, history and sustainability, with our engagement and educational strategies reflecting these relationships. 2 While we would expect to further develop the vision for a Banks Peninsula Geopark in conjunction with our community, as we move forward with the application for UNESCO status we would envisage it being based on a number of potential and interconnected elements: 1 Celebrating our Land, Tikanga and Stories. 2 Creating an identity of international significance founded both on the geological, ecological, archaeological, and cultural features, and on the community and sustainability of Banks Peninsula. 3 Promoting the awareness of Geosites, as icons of national and international significance. 4 Stimulating interest in, and assisting with, the continuance of diverse scientific studies in the region and communicate this knowledge. 5 Educating, promoting and relating the history of the region, and recognising its significance in New Zealand. 6 Bringing together Banks Peninsula's communities, by providing a framework for social, economic, cultural, environmental, and sustainable development. 7 Achieving UNESCO accreditation as a UNESCO Geopark in the Global Geopark Network. Develop further avenues for communication rather than "a focus on reporting mātauranga Māori (indigenous knowledge) alongside our state of the environment reporting. Reporting as a communication strategy may not be achieving the best communication outcomes. Suggestion to work strategically with key community groups and organisations to find ways to convey this information through other mediums or blend this information into ongoing projects, i.e. more sign postings in significant areas stating what is at the site, why is it important and what is being done to look after it (by ECAN, locals, farmers, management etc). We believe that biodiversity is an important aspect to consider within our environment. Fundamental and somewhat underpinning biodiversity is geodiversity (the variation in rocks and soils), following this greater protections should be placed on not only managing the impacts to biodiversity but also looking at the influences on that biodiversity, for example not all rock exposures of Banks Peninsula are derived from the same rocks / source regions, these variations provide natural variations to substrates, and bio / geo-chemical variations creating niche environments. Extension of biodiversity to include and reflect landscape values and site specific qualities (geodiversity). Biodiversity and biosecurity of Banks Peninsula and the goals ECAN, CCC, and community groups wish to achieve can be effectively communicated through the Banks Peninsula Geopark platform. Key messages, information and behaviours can be delivered through the varying mediums of the Geopark, including sign posts, pamphlets, visual media etc, and developed in conjunction with ECAN and partners. 5 Banks Peninsula should be viewed as an area that is of significance within the realm of biodiversity. Much biodiversity stress / focus is on the Canterbury Plains, yet health of waterways, remnant bush, rocky outcrops, estuaries, tidal, nearshore and offshore environments of Banks Peninsula need a greater level of acknowledgement, protection and education. Coastal environment hazards - fill in gaps of databases. On Banks Peninsula many bays are exposed to tsunami hazards, limitation of current lidar and DTM/DEM's is limiting science/ research on inundation and exposure. A Banks Peninsula Geopark can become a vital tool in engaging and communicating hazards and risks to communities and visitors to Banks Peninsula. Engage communities,homeowners and schools in the intended program to obtain greater buy in, and property owners activelycontributing to the campaign starting with their own property. Use various platforms to engage and educate public and visitors on the target, how they can be involved, or make a difference. A Banks Peninsula Geopark can become a vital tool in engaging and communicating pest control to communities of and visitors to Banks Peninsula. 9 Tēnā koutou ECAN We would like to provide a level of background information on the proposal of Banks Peninsula as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Geopark ( In recent months, UNESCO New Zealand has formally acknowledged Geoparks as a protective measure for our landscapes, and that this internationally designated status has a place within the New Zealand environment. What is a UNESCO Geopark? In 1998, UNESCO the UN agency, Ecological and Earth Sciences Division, developed the Global Geopark Network, to reconnect human society at all levels to the planet we all call home and to celebrate how our planet and its 4,600 million year long history has shaped every aspect of our lives and our societies. Similar in some ways to UNESCO s renowned World Heritage status, a Geopark is a single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Unlike a World Heritage site, Geopark status is not a legislative designation, and does not imply restrictions on any economic activity. Currently 127 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 35 countries have been granted this special status from UNESCO, with none currently within Oceania. For more information go to: What is the process to choose a new Geopark? In January 2018 UNESCO New Zealand announced that it would begin a nomination process for two New Zealand Geoparks. Aspiring Global Geoparks must first submit an Expression of Interest to the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO. Preferred applicants will be invited to develop a full dossier, including a comprehensive business plan for submission and evaluation to UNESCO. Why should we consider Banks Peninsula? Banks Peninsula has a complex and varied history, with respect to its geology, flora and fauna, along with unique climatic, cultural and historical features. With these aspects framed in and around a runanaga driven concept for the project, we believe Banks Peninsula can be developed into an internationally significant UNESCO Geopark, celebrating distinct indigenous values, the land itself and all our Banks Peninsula stories. There is an existing body of research on the significance of being awarded UNESCO Geopark status and the impacts a Geopark can have on a region and community, particularly through geotourism. Dr Geoff Hicks (Natural Sciences Commissioner, New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO) has

10 explored many of these advantages by in a recent UNESCO New Zealand video ( In it Dr Hicks outlines the economic, social and environmental benefits, not just for local communities but how they can contribute to a broader communities, creating employment, opportunities and recognition, and highlighting the way that a Geopark can promote and develop a region in a sustainable way. How has the Geopark concept developed on Banks Peninsula? Applying the Geopark concept to Banks Peninsula was first conceived in 2011, following the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence. Since this time, researchers from the University of Canterbury, supported by Frontiers Abroad Aotearoa (an organisation that supports graduate students from the US to experience our unique geological environment), have been undertaking background studies to develop the fundamentals of a Geopark and have begun to consult interested stakeholders in the Banks Peninsula community. Te Rūnanga o Koukourarata has now become a primary driving force behind the project, and has brought together Ōnuku Rūnanga, Wairewa Rūnanga, Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke,( the Te Pataka o Rakaihautu Papatipu Rūnanga) in an MOU, to work together to explore a proposal to establish a UNESCO Geopark. In developing the Geopark concept we have been visited by representatives of two developing Geoparks (in Indonesia and Hungary) and an Australian Geopark (Kaniwinika) and by Professor Cynthia Burek, of the Angelsey / GeoMon Geopark ( What is our current status? A Geopark is comprised of a series of Geopoints, which are grouped together to form a Geosite. For Banks Peninsula we wish to develop the Geopark in a holistic sense, incorporating and blending elements of geology, flora and fauna, archaeology, oral traditions, mātauranga maori, history and sustainability, with our engagement and educational strategies reflecting these relationships. We have undertaken audits throughout Banks Peninsula and have identified key Geosites that we see as the initial Geosites to be developed. These have been selected basis that they: 1) Cover a range of blended elements (geology, flora and fauna, archaeology, oral traditions, mātauranga maori, history and sustainability) 2) Span varying areas of Banks Peninsula, both geologically, topographically, ecologically, and traditionally (runanga) 3) Are located on publicly accessible land 4) Already have current levels of supporting information, documentation, and prepared resources A Banks Peninsula Geopark Organisation We envisage developing a Geopark on Banks Peninsula as an umbrella organisation, in effect linking aspects at multiple levels i.e. governmental (both central and local), rural and commercial, and

11 extending all the way down to grass root community projects. The Geopark would also provide a unified and coordinated approach for the management of assets (i.e. with/through DOC, CCC, ECAN, TRONT), enabling community led initiatives and projects to further protect and preserve the environment, and boost economic development by helping to market Banks Peninsula as an internationally recognised destination.
