Project started on 1 st of September, 2016, ends on 30 th of April, months Based on data available so far 1
Marine ecosystems typology 2
Data sources Marine ecosystem typology - national: Initial assessment of marine environment, Natura 2000 mapping, Program BG 02 project Проучвания на състоянието на морската околна среда и подобряване на програмите за мониторинг, разработени съгласно РДМС (ISMEIMP). industry related regional projects (South stream, Burgas- Alexandropoulis), research projects; - international: EUSeaMap for benthic broad scale habitats (previously known as predominant), remote sensing, Corine Land Cover dataset (for coastal lagoons-x2), FP7 research projects- PERSEUS, COCONET. Marine ecosystem condition - WFD monitoring in coastal water bodies, MSFD monitoring in shelf and open waters, experts opinion Marine ecosystem services - provisioning- national statistic, research projects and articles, experts opinion - regulation and maintenance-research projects and articles, developed new approaches, experts opinion; - cultural- national statistic, research projects and articles, experts opinion 3
Mapping areas and data sources 4
The problems and challenges Typology: MSFD benthic broad scale habitats vs EUNIS-L2 5
International Scientific Conference Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem Services -Science in Action , Sofia
International Scientific Conference Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem Services -Science in Action , Sofia
Typology- Differentiate EUNIS Coastal, Medio- and infralittoral 8
Areas comparison EUNIS-L2 FEMA EUSeaMap Difference Types km2 % km2 % km2 A A A A A A TOTAL
Problems in Ecosystem conditions assessment and mapping WFD vs MSFD monitoring. How to define status? WFD MSFD Area 1 nmile coastal at the level of Costal, shelf, open waters water bodies Indicators Biological and physico-chemical quality elements- water body and benthos. Specified in Ordinance H4. One out-all out approach Ecosystem approach- 11 Descriptors. From Biodiversity to adverse effects of eutrophication, pollution, bottom integrity, marine litter and underwater noise. Scales 5 levels for BQE, 2 for PCQE High, Good, Moderate, Poor, Bad 2 levels- Good and Not good Environmental Status Ecological Status Data availability Regular monitoring since 2010 Limited- few sampling stations, single values mainly related to research projects of IO-BAS and IBER-BAS. B02 ISMEIMP project set up monitoring program and indicator values. 10
Map of data availability 11
Problems in Ecosystem services assessment and mapping - in Methodology- adopted CICES framework (The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services) which links with the framework of the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounts. - revised as many classes are not relevant in marine environment and to also include specific for the Black sea basin potential services as using H 2 S & methane in fuel cells, salt production, oil and gas production. - data availability- national statistic, scientific papers, research and development projects, etc. Data availability- mainly on Provisioning, Nutrition- fish catchments, aquaculture etc. Scaling- related to the 2-levels in MSFD approach and 5 levels scoring in methodology. Mapping- needed to adapt without loosing performance in assessment. Regulation & Maintenance and cultural servises need to be derived from scientific publications and various of undefined sources- based mainly on experts assessment. 12
Example of Provisioning services- Fish catch- Landings in kg 13
Conclusions: - EUNIS Ecosystem typology- needed further in-situ studies to verify distribution of all subtypes; - Ecosystem conditions- collect more in-situ data for ecosystem conditions according to the MSFD criteria and refinement of the ecosystem condition indicators; - Ecosystem services: needed more relevant data and adjustment of the ecosystem services indicators framework. 14
