Using satellite images to calculate land use and land cover statistics National Administrative Department of Statistics DANE Colombia April /DANEColombia /DANEColombia
Background (1)
Objective Explore the usefulness of Big Data from satellite land images for the updating and improvement of statistic information. To assess the feasibility of applying remote sensing methods for the estimation of land consumption rate, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based spatial analysis for the calculation of the relationship between land consumption and population growth in metropolitan areas Indicator ODS 68.
Methodology Changes detection Data collection and pre-procesi ng Population data collection Satellite images collection Image pre-proces sing Image classification Edition rules Accuracy assessment Change detection matrix Rates calculation Indicator calculation Population growth rate Urban land consumptio n rate Ratio of the rates
Imagery collection Criteria: Availability Quality (percentage of cloud cover) Acquisitions at the same time of the year Spatial coverage Similar spectral bands Landsat Landsat 2010 Landsat 2015

Moving forward The Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD) is collaborating with the project and providing technical support, using its pool of experts to replicate the gains in other countries and SDG indicators.. World Population data -WorldPop Google Earth Engine platform MODIS and Landsat images

Moving forward
Comments Big Data from satellite imagery is a powerful tool to increase the potential applications of statistics and to improve the quality of statistics data. This integration allows the exploration of new methodologies and the improvement of those already available. The benefits generated by the use of remote sensing, create the opportunity to make the information more traceable and allow the design of different types of multitemporal studies. This project is a good example for the use of open source software and satellite images, which are both available on the web for free.
