6 Chemical Formulas wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww0 Player A Questions 1. How many elements are present in the 3Mg(OH) 2 3. How many molecules are present in the 3Mg(OH) 2 5. What is the number circled below called? What does this number indicate? 4Na 2 CO 3 2. How many total atoms are present in the 3Mg(OH) 2 4. The chemical formula for aluminum oxide is Al 2 O 3. How would the following be written as a chemical formula?: 4 molecules of aluminum oxide 6. What is the correct way to write the formula for the chemical compound shown below? A. 3HN B. NH 3 C. N 3 H D. NH 3 7. How many elements are present in the 2NaHCO 3 8. The chemical formula for a certain substance is shown here. 3C 6 H 5 OH How many total atoms are present in the substance represented by the chemical formula shown? 9. Which of the following accurately describes the number of each element found in the chemical formula? (NH 3 ) 2 CO 3 A. N= 2, H= 4, C= 3, O= 3 B. N= 2, H= 6, C= 1, O= 6 C. N= 6, H= 6, C= 1, O= 3 D. N= 2, H= 6, C= 1, O= The chemical formula for calcium carbonate is shown: CaCO 3 The 3 at the very end of the chemical formula for calcium carbonate means that there are three - A. atoms of oxygen. B. molecules of oxygen in calcium carbonate. C. atoms of calcium carbonate in each molecule. D. molecules of calcium carbonate Science Teaching Junkie, Inc. 6

7 Player B Answers total atoms; The number of atoms is shown by the subscript (small number written to the right and below the element s symbol). There are 2 atoms of manganese (Mn), and 8 atoms of oxygen (O) = molecules; The number of molecules is shown by the coefficient (large number written at the beginning of a chemical formula). 2 molecules of MnO 4 would look like this: The circled number is called a subscript. It indicates the number of atoms of an element; remember: sub means below a subscript is the small number written to the right and below an element s symbol and it indicates the number of atoms of that element. 7. C. 1 atom of calcium, 2 atoms of oxygen, and 2 atoms of hydrogen; answer choice A has the wrong number of calcium atoms, answer choice B has the wrong number of oxygen atoms, and answer choice D has the wrong number of oxygen and hydrogen atoms. 9. Ca = 1, C = 2, O = 6. The subscript written outside of the parentheses only goes with the elements written inside the parentheses the 2 gets multiplied by the 1 atom of carbon and the 3 atoms of oxygen. Because Ca has no subscript written after it, that means there is 1 atom. 4. 3H 2 SO 4 ; the number of molecules is shown by the coefficient written at the front of a chemical formula. 6. B. CH 4 ; answer choice A. 4CH would have 4 different molecules of CH; answer choice C. (CH) 4 would have 4 atoms of carbon and 4 atoms of hydrogen; answer choice D. HC 4 is not the correct format for writing a chemical formula. 8. B. molecules of calcium carbonate; the 2 is a coefficient. A coefficient indicates the number of molecules of a given chemical formula elements (C, H, S, and O); Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Each element symbol begins with a capital letter. A quick way to count elements in a chemical formula is to count the number of capital letters (and make sure that none of them are repeated only count each element once.) 1. 2 elements (manganese and oxygen). Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Each element symbol begins with a capital letter. 8 Chemical Formulas wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww0 Player B Questions 1. How many elements are present in the 2MnO 4 3. How many molecules are present in the 2MnO 4 5. What is the number circled below called? What does this number indicate? 2. How many total atoms are present in the 2MnO 4 4. The chemical formula for sulfuric acid is H 2 SO 4. How would the following be written as a chemical formula?: 3 molecules of sulfuric acid 6. What is the correct way to write the formula for the chemical compound shown below? A. 4CH 4Na 2 CO 3 B. CH 4 C. (CH) 4 D. HC 4 7. Which of the following accurately describes the number of calcium, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms in Ca(OH) 2? A. 2 atoms of calcium, 2 atoms of oxygen, and 2 atoms of hydrogen B. 1 atom of calcium, 1 atom of oxygen, and 2 atoms of hydrogen C. 1 atom of calcium, 2 atoms of oxygen, and 2 atoms of hydrogen D. 1 atom of calcium, 3 atoms of oxygen, and 3 atoms of hydrogen 9. Identify the number of atoms of each element involved in the chemical formula: Ca(CO 3 ) 2 8. The chemical formula for calcium carbonate is shown: 2CaCO 3 The 2 in front of the chemical formula for calcium carbonate means that there are two - A. atoms of calcium carbonate. B. molecules of calcium carbonate. C. atoms of calcium carbonate in each molecule. D. calcium atoms in each molecule. 10. The chemical formula for a certain substance is shown here: 2(CH 3 ) 2 SO How many different elements are present in the substance represented by the chemical formula shown? 2016 Science Teaching Junkie, Inc. 8

9 Player A Answers total atoms; The number of atoms is shown by the subscript (small number written to the right and below the element s symbol). There are 3 atoms of magnesium (Mg), and 6 atoms of oxygen (O), and 6 atoms of hydrogen (H) = molecules; The number of molecules is shown by the coefficient (large number written at the beginning of a chemical formula). 3 molecules of Mg(OH) 2 would look like this: 5. The circled number is called a coefficient. It indicates the number of molecules of a chemical formula; remember: in math, a coefficient is the number written in front of a variable, which gets multiplied by the variable(s) elements (Na, H, C, and O); Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Each element symbol begins with a capital letter. A quick way to count elements in a chemical formula is to count the number of capital letters (and make sure that none of them are repeated only count each element once.) 9. D. N= 2, H= 6, C= 1, O= 3. Answer choice A has the wrong number of hydrogen atoms, and carbon atoms. Answer choice B has the wrong number of oxygen atoms. Answer choice C has the wrong number of nitrogen atoms. 4. 4Al 2 O 3 ; the number of molecules is shown by the coefficient written at the front of a chemical formula. 6. D. NH 3 ; answer choice A. 3HN would have 3 different molecules of HN; answer choice B. NH 3 is not the correct format for writing a chemical formula, answer choice C. N 3 H would have 3 atoms of nitrogen and 1 atom of hydrogen total atoms; The number of atoms is shown by the subscript (small number written to the right and below the element s symbol). There are 18 atoms of carbon (C), 18 atoms of hydrogen (H), and 3 atoms of oxygen (O) = A. atoms of oxygen; The 3 is called a subscript. It indicates the number of atoms of an element; remember: sub means below a subscript is the small number written to the right and below an element s symbol and it indicates the number of atoms of that element elements (magnesium, oxygen, and hydrogen). Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Each element symbol begins with a capital letter.
