3 GEISA-11 SYSTEM GENERAL CONTEXT The performance of the new generation of hyperspectral Earth atmosphere sounders, such as AIRS in the USA and IASI in Europe, depends ultimately on the accuracy to which the spectroscopic parameters of the optically active atmospheric gases are known, since they constitute an essential input to the forward radiative transfer models that are used to interpret their observations. GEISA is a computer-accessible Spectroscopic Database designed for accurate forward atmospheric radiative transfer calculations using a lineby-line (atmospheric) layer-by-layer approach. spectral range 10-6 _ 35,877 cm _ 0.28 µm GEISA: Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques ; Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information

21 Monitoring the evolution of the ozone layer has become a subject of major concern both by the scientific community and the general public from a wider perspective, including the close relationship between the ozone layer changes and the global climate change. There are several instruments on board satellites which have been designed for retrieving ozone and other trace gases in the atmosphere, providing daily images of the global total ozone column (TOC) with uniform spatial coverage. In this context, the Meteorological Operational satellite program MetOp from EUMETSAT has foreseen a series of three polar-orbit platforms. Two of them, MetOp-A and MetOp-B have already been launched. Among the instruments aboard Metop s are the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME-2) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). Both sensors retrieve total ozone column and ozone profile information with a high spatial and temporal resolution: GOME-2 instrument obtains the total ozone from the backscattered solar ultraviolet visible (UV VIS; 240 to 790 nm) radiance emerging at the top of the atmosphere, the IASI instrument retrieves it from the thermal infrared radiance (TIR)
