1 GPS Safety Summary This Product Safety Summary is intended to provide a general overview of the chemical substance in the context of ICCA Global Product Strategy. The information on the Summary is basic information and is not intended to provide emergency response information, medical information or treatment information. The summary should not be used to provide in-depth safety and health information. In-depth safety and health information can be found on the (extended) Safety Data Sheet (e)sds for the chemical substance. Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate General Statement Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate is a colourless organic liquid with a mild odour. The multi-constituent substance has a very low vapour pressure and is miscible with most common organic solvents. It is not classified as dangerous for human health and for environment, based on available data. Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate (also referred to as DBE or dibasic esters) is used as solvent in a wide range of applications for industrial, professional and consumer purposes, such as coil and can coating formulation, resins for foundry cores, paint stripping, formulation for pesticides, insecticides, printing inks Biodegradable and non-flammable, it is used as an eco-friendly alternative to many traditional chlorinated or highly flammable solvents. Dibasic esters are formulated in suitable concentrations for consumer applications, according to appropriate regulations, to ensure safe use of the final product, in the conditions of use written on the product packaging. Chemical Identity Name: Brand name: EC Chemical name (IUPAC): Synonyms: CAS number(s): Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate Rhodiasolv RPDE Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate DBE; Dibasic esters Not applicable (multi-constituent substance) see CAS numbers of the constituents in the table below EC List number: Molecular formula: Not applicable (multi-constituent substance) Dibasic esters GPS Safety Summary Rev 0 October /6

2 Identity of the constituents: Parameter Dimethyl glutarate Dimethyl adipate Dimethyl succinate EC number CAS number Molecular formula C7H12O4 C8H14O4 C6H10O4 Molecular weight (g/mol) Uses and applications Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate is used as an alternative to traditional solvents in a large range of industrial and professional applications. For example, DBE can replace chlorinated solvents in cleaning operations or may be used instead of highly flammable solvents in order to reduce environment impact for coil coating. The substance is traditionally used for coil and can coating for paint formulation, and as a key solvent in resins for foundry cores. It is also in use in a number of new applications in order to meet Health, Safety and Environment regulation such as paint stripping, pesticides and insecticides formulations, printing inks. Dibasic esters are also used as solvent in consumer products, such as paint thinners, adhesives or household cleaners. 3 Health Effects Human Health Safety Assessment Effect Assessment Acute Toxicity Oral/inhalation/dermal Irritation / corrosion Skin/eye/respiratory tract Sensitisation Toxicity after repeated exposure Oral/inhalation/dermal Genotoxicity / Mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Toxicity for reproduction Result Not classified for acute toxicity for all three routes of exposure. Not irritating to skin and eyes. Not classified as sensitising to the skin, based on animal data. Low toxicity after repeated exposure by inhalation, oral and dermal routes, not resulting in classification. At high concentrations, possible effects on the olfactory epithelium. Not classified either for mutagenicity or genotoxicity. No data available. No adverse effect on fertility and on development based on in vivo experimental study results. All these results are based on available data. Regarding toxicological hazard, reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate is not classified according to EC 1272/2008 regulation criteria. Environmental Effects Environment Safety Assessment Effect Assessment Aquatic Toxicity Fate and behaviour Biodegradation Bioaccumulation potential PBT / vpvb conclusion Result Harmful to fish and algae. Not harmful to invertebrates. Result Readily biodegradable. Not potentially bioaccumulative. The substance is considered to be neither persistent and bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) nor very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vpvb). Based on available data, reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate is considered as harmful to aquatic life, but since it is readily biodegradable and not potentially bioaccumulative, it is not classified as dangerous for the environment, according to EU regulation (EC) 1272/2008. 4 Exposure Human health Reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate is manufactured in industry in closed processes which ensure that the risk is controlled. Where there is a risk of exposure to the substance, during (un)loading, sampling, analysis or maintenance operations and particularly in case of batch processes and spray applications, the exposure should be kept as minimum as possible and at a safe level (strictly below exposure limits, when applied) by the use of appropriate risk management measures as suitable collective and personal protective equipment, good industrial hygiene practices and risk communication through appropriate training of workers. In end-use products like household cleaners or paint thinners, DBE is formulated to comply with requirements of the most stringent regulations for all applicable consumer uses to ensure that final products are used safely in the conditions of use written on the packaging. Environment Based on its physico-chemical properties, reaction mass of dimethyl adipate and dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate has a low potential for bioaccumulation and is readily biodegradable. It would be expected to mainly partition into the aquatic compartment and not to adsorb on soil. Emissions in the air are not expected as the substance has a low potential for volatility. On industrial manufacturing and professional sites, effluents that may contain the substance must be directed to a waste water treatment plant where it will be rapidly and completely removed due to its ready biodegradability. Due to its ecological properties, an indirect exposure of humans to dibasic esters via the environment is not expected. Risk Management Recommendations Human health For industrial and professional uses of dibasic esters and as recommended for the use of any chemical product, workers must be well informed and trained and must refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Where there is a risk of exposure to DBE (during (un)loading, mixing, sampling, analysis or maintenance operations and particularly in case of batch processes and spray applications), it must be controlled by handling the substance under an adequate and efficient ventilation. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn (safety goggles, gloves, protective suit) as recommended in the SDS. In case of exposure to vapours or aerosol, a respirator with approved filter should be used. General industrial hygiene measures are required to ensure safe handling of the substance: Use well-maintained PPE; wash hands and skin following contact; do not eat, drink or smoke at the workplace. For consumer uses, dibasic esters are formulated in suitable concentrations according to appropriate regulations, to ensure safe-use of the final products, in the conditions of use written on the product packaging. Dibasic esters GPS Safety Summary Rev 0 October /6

5 Environment All industrial aqueous releases that may contain the substance must be directed to a waste water treatment plant or incinerated in compliance with local regulation. Disposal, treatment or recycling of industrial waste must comply with applicable regulations to preserve environment.
