1 Course Specifications 1- Basic Information: Course Code: 102 :(بالنسبة لمرحلة البكالوريوس ) hours No. of contact Theoretical: 36 hrs Course Title: Pharmaceutical organic chemistry I Practical: 36 hrs Year/level 1 st year 1 st semester (Mandatory course) 2- Course Goals: This course in organic chemistry is essential for further studies in Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry, and natural product, It is highly recommended for those studying biochemistry, biomedicinal sciences, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry so it is considered to be a life-long learner for continuous improvement of professional knowledge and skills. It is designed to introduce students to the roles of Organic Chemistry. It covers in detail the (Nomenclature, methods of preparation and chemical characteristics of different classes of aliphatic organic compounds viz: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkadienes, alkyl halides, Organometallic compounds, Alcohols, Aldehyde and Ketones. 3- Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs): a. Knowledge and understanding After completing the course the student should demonstrate knowledge and comprehensive understanding of :- a1. The principles behind the bonding nature of organic chemistry and how this related to the compound reactivity.

3 4- Course Content: Theoretical course Hours Lectures 1- Introduction to the types of organic chemical reactions (SN 1, 6 4 SN 2, free radical and Elimination Reactions). 2- Chemistry of aliphatic hydrocarbons ;( nomenclature, 12 8 preparation and reactions of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes). 3- Chemistry of alkyl halides and organometallic compounds 6 4 (structure, nomenclature, preparation and reactions). 4- Chemistry of alcohols (structure, nomenclature, preparation 3 2 and reactions). 5- Chemistry of aldehyde and ketones(structure, nomenclature, 9 6 preparation and reactions).
