1 Course Specifications 1- Basic Information: Course Code: 213 :(بالنسبة لمرحلة البكالوريوس ) hours No. of contact Theoretical: 36 hrs Course Title: Pharmaceutical organic chemistry III Practical: 36 hrs Year/level 2 nd year 1 st semester (Mandatory course) 2- Course Goals: This course is designed to provide a basic knowledge and understanding of chemical characteristics of aromatic and polynuclear aromatic compounds; synthesis and electrophilic substitution reactions, covering chemistry of different classes of aromatic compounds such as (alkylbenzene, arylhalides, aromatic aldehydes, acids..etc) and structural elucidation of organic compounds using molecular spectra (UV, IR, H 1 NMR and mass). 3- Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs): a. Knowledge and understanding After completing the course the student should demonstrate knowledge and comprehensive understanding of :- a1. Nomenclature, preparation and description of different reactions of the aromatic compounds. a2. The difference between the aromatic compounds referred to different classes. a3. The relation between the chemical structure and the reactivity of aromatic compounds.

2 a4. The identification and elucidation of the chemical structure of aromatic compounds from its spectral data. b. Professional and Practical b1. Handle and dispose chemicals and pharmaceutical preparations safely. b2. Use the proper organic pathway for synthesis of aromatic compounds. b3. Synthesize and identify some aromatic compounds. c. Intellectual c1. Complete successfully written and oral assignments and examinations. c2. Select the appropriate methods for synthesis of aromatic compounds. c3. Analyze molecular spectra (UV, IR, H 1 -NMR and Mass) of organic compounds. c4. Solve spectroscopic problems (computer based exercise). c5. Conduct research studies and analyze the results. d.
