THE SHETKARI SHIKSHAN MANDAL, SANGLI BHIVRABAI SAWANT COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND RESEARCH, NARHE, PUNE. (JSPM GROUP OF INSTITUTES) DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING A REPORT ON VISIT TO BHATGHAR DAM (GRAVITY DAM) Name of the student:- Roll no:-
BHATGHAR DAM
Visit to Bhatghar Dam (Gravity dam) 1 st February 2017: The students of TSSM s Bhivrabai Sawant College of Engineering, Narhe visited Bhatghar Dam which is a Rock filled Gravity Dam. The Department of Civil Engineering arranged the visit to the Dam site. The purpose behind arranging the site visit was to achieve practical knowledge and the implementations of the techniques studied. The students along with some of the faculty members departed from the college at around 8:30 am in the morning. And reached the destination at 11 am. The students were shown the instruments for the measurement of the Rainfall, Evaporation etc. The workers and the Engineers present at the location explained the operation of the Gates of the dam. There were provisions for the water to be conveyed to the Hydropower generation station. The students also saw the spillways and also various components of the Dam and also the provisions of the Energy dissipation of the water flowing downstream. The versatility of the dam is the gates installed to discharge the flood water over the spillway. These are the automatic gates also called as Visvesvaraya gates. The speciality of the gates is that the gates open automatically when the flood is to be discharged. The Engineers at the Dam location explained the working of the Automatic gates with the help of the small scale model. The purpose of the dam is for Irrigation and Hydroelectricity. Bhatghar Dam is a gravity dam on Yelwanti River near Bhor in Pune district.
AUTOMATIC GATES OVER BHATGHAR DAM MODEL OF AUTOMATIC GATES
Specifications of BHATGHAR DAM Construction of Dam was done between 1913 and Bhatghar Dam is situated in Seismic Zone III in Pune District at Bhor. It is a Stone Masonry Gravity Dam Length of Dam : 1625 m Type of Spillway: Ogee Spillway. Total Length of Spillway: m Crest Level of Spillway: m Spillway Capacity : 2285 cumec Design Flood: 2285 cumec Max Height above the Foundation: m Type of Spillway Gates: Radial No. of Gates: 81 No. of Automatic Gates (Visvesvaraya Gates): 45. Size of Spillway Gates: 3.04 x 2.43 m. Total Volume Content of Dam: 650 TCM. Operating & Maintenance Agency: WRD( Water Resource Dept) & GOM Brief Working of the Automatic Gates: As the name suggest that the gates are operated automatically when the water is to be discharged over the spillway during the period of flood. The Assembly consists of a Hollow Steel container on one side and Gate on the either side. When the water in the dam rises to the maximum level of gates the water in collected and the Hollow steel container floats and rises upwards and due to the weight of the gate, the gate goes downwards and the water is discharged over the spillway.
Salient Features of BHATGHAR DAM Maximum Water Level: m Full Reservoir Level: m Minimum Draw Down Level: m Gross Storage Capacity: m Live Storage Capacity: MCM Dead Storage Capacity: 4.65 MCM Submergence area: 3.79 thousand Hectares. Catchment Area: m 2 Water Allocated for Irrigation: MCM. Conclusion :- To understand the Generation of the Electricity, Hydraulics of Dams, the measurement & Analysis of the Rainfall and the Precipitation etc the Visit to the Dam was very helpful. The students were introduced to the controlling unit of the Dam gates; how they are operated under certain conditions etc. the various components of the dam etc were also shown to the students. The site visit was organised by the Staff members if the TSSM S BSCOER, Narhe department of Civil Engineering, we would like to thank all this staff members for organising the site visit.
