Organic Chemistry I (CHE275) is the first course in a two-semester sequence. This course covers the fundamental principles behind the structures and properties of organic molecules, and how these structures and properties control different classes of chemical reactions between the molecules. Specifically, we will study the details of the electronegativity of the atoms and the electron distribution on a three-dimensional carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen (and a few others) skeleton. These details will be related to the chemical properties and reactions that determine which specific electron departs from which atom, and where it is incorporated in which new atom, leading to breaking and forming covalent bonds, and thus breaking and making molecules. The course will cover the first 13 Chapters of the text with a different weight of emphasis. Particularly, an extensively expanded Chapter 1 (much of which is only touched on lightly in general chemistry) and added materials will be emphasized to build the fundamentals for proficiency for studying the rest of the organic chemistry.

2 Course Outline and Calendar Weeks Chapter Note: 1. Aug 28-Sept Sept & 2 (Sept 4 labor day, no class) 3. Sept Sept Sept Knowledge integration a Exam 1 (Ch 1-3) on Sept 28 b 6. Oct Oct & 6 8. 3 Homework, Examinations and Grading. Four Take-home exams: 20% (5% each) Four In-Class exams: 15, 20, 20, 20% Paper and online Homework: 5% There will be no makeup examinations. Students with valid reasons for missing an examination will need to provide written and signed (if appropriate) documentation to the instructor for individual evaluation. For a big class like this one, there will be no extra credit mechanism. Regrade requests must be submitted within one week after the return of the exam, the request must be submitted by an to myself and all the TAs with cell phone pictures (or scans) attached of your exam, with a brief description of your concerns. Page 3 Homework. Both paper and online homework will be given. Late homework may not be accepted. If accepted, there will be a points reduction. Online homework is available and to be accessed on blackboard. Academic Honesty. Complete academic honesty is expected of all students. Any incidence of academic dishonesty, as defined by the SU Academic Integrity Policy (see will result in both course sanctions and formal notification of the College of Arts & Sciences. All assignments turned in must be the work of the individual student and cannot be copied from another student's work, the text, or any other source. Any evidence of copying homework, or cheating during or after the examinations will result in an F grade for the entire course, and in referral to the academic integrity office. If I do not report these, I am violating the integrity policy myself. Disability Accommodation: Students with any sort of disability who may need special accommodations should see me right away. In order to obtain authorized accommodations, students should be registered with the Office of Disability Services (ODS), 804 University Avenue, Room 309, and have an updated accommodation letter. Accommodations and related support services such as exam administration are not provided retroactively and must be requested in advance. SU s religious observances policy, found at recognizes the diversity of faiths represented among the campus community and protects the rights of students, faculty, and staff to observe religious holy days according to their tradition. Under the policy, students are required to notify their instructors of any work that may be missed before the end of the second week of classes. For fall and spring semesters, an online notification process is available through MySlice/Student Services/Enrollment/My Religious Observances from the first day of class until the end of the second week of class.
