The quntiztion of the Berry phse, nd the ssoited wvefuntion polriztion, mnifest themselves s remrkly roust physil oservles, suh s quntized Hll ondutivity nd disorder-insensitive photoni trnsport. Reently, novel lss of topologil phses, lled higher-order topologil phses, were proposed y generlizing the fundmentl reltionship etween the Berry phse nd the quntized polriztion, from dipole to multipole moments [ 4]. Here, we demonstrte the first photoni reliztion of the quntized qudrupole topologil phse, using silion photonis. In this nd-order topologil phse, the quntiztion of the ulk qudrupole moment in two-dimensionl system mnifests s topologilly roust orner sttes. We unmiguously show the presene of lolized orner sttes nd estlish their roustness ginst ertin defets. Furthermore, we ontrst these topologil sttes ginst topologilly-trivil orner sttes, in system without ulk qudrupole moment, nd oserve no roustness. Our photoni pltform ould enle the development of roust on-hip lssil nd quntum optil devies with higher-order topologil protetion. The Berry phse provides universl frmework whih reltes the roust quntiztion of physil oservles t the oundries of non-interting system to the topologil properties of the ulk. For exmple, in eletroni systems, the Berry phse dittes the presene of quntized zerodimensionl (D) hrges in one-dimensionl (D) insultors [5, 6], quntized hrge/spin urrents long the D-edges of D quntum Hll/spin Hll systems [7, 8], nd onduting D surfes in 3D topologil insultors [9]. In generl, this ulk-oundry orrespondene reltes the quntized hrge/urrents rried y the (n )-dimensionl oundries to the quntized eletri dipole moments of the n-dimensionl ulk []. Reently, this reltionship etween the hrge moments of the ulk nd their oundry mnifesttions hs een generlized from eletri dipole to multipole moments, leding to higher-order topologil phses [ 4]. For exmple, quntized qudrupole moment in D system leds to the presene of quntized hrges, whih re lolized t the D orners. This is in ontrst to the quntized dipole moment whih gives rise to D edge urrents, in D system. When formulted in terms of the Berry phse, the ulkoundry orrespondene lso pplies to neutrl osoni systems, tht is, the non-trivil topology of the ulk leds to the emergene of roust oundry sttes. In ft, topologilly roust, lolized D edge sttes in D systems nd propgting D edge sttes in D systems hve een relized using tomi [ 3], photoni [4 9] s well s phononi ltties [ ]. Motivted y the serh for higher-order topologil phses, the D qudrupole topologil phses with roust D orner sttes were reently oserved using mirowves [3 5] nd phononi met-mterils [6 8]. We report on the first optil reliztion of the qudrupole topologil phse, employing the integrted silion-photonis pltform. Using spetrosopi mesurements nd diret imging, we revel the existene of the lolized orner sttes nd show tht they re roust ginst ertin frition disorders whih re uiquitous in nnophotoni systems. Furthermore, y introduing qudrupole domin oundry in our system, we show tht the oserved orner sttes re not rtifts t the physil orners of the lttie. We note tht the orner sttes n lso emerge in systems without qudrupole moment [9, 3]. We study orner sttes ssoited with zero ulk qudrupole moment nd oserve tht they re not immune to frition disorders. Our qudrupole topologil system is relized using twodimensionl (D) lttie of nnophotoni silion ring resontors (Fig., see SI for detils on the devie frition). The unit ell (plquette) of this lttie onsists of four site rings rrnged into squre (shded lue in Fig.). These site rings re evnesently oupled to their nerest neighors using set of uxiliry rings, whih we ll link rings (shded green nd red). We ontrol the mgnitude of the oupling strength etween the lttie sites y djusting the gp etween the sitering nd the link-ring wveguides. Furthermore, the resonne frequenies of the link rings re detuned from those of the site rings y introduing n extr pth length. This llows us to mnipulte the sign (phse) of the oupling etween the site rings nd introdue syntheti guge flux threding eh squre plquette [5, 3]. Speifilly, when the link ring oupling two site rings long the x-xis is vertilly shifted, the photons hopping towrds the right trvel slightly longer pth ompred to those hopping towrds the left (Fig.). This pth length differene results in n effetive, diretion-dependent, hopping phse φ. We hoose φ = π suh tht the shifted link ring (shded red) introdues negtive oupling. In

Eh unit ell onsists of four lttie sites with nerest-neighor ouplings, of mgnitude γ. One of the ouplings (shown s red) is negtive whih introdues guge flux φ = π per unit ell. The unit-ells re oupled to neighoring ells using oupling strength ±κ. Shemti of the implementtion of the D lttie with ring resontors. The unit ell (shded gry) is omposed of four site rings (shded lue), whih re evnesently oupled y four link-rings (shded green nd red). We ontrol the mgnitude of inter- nd intr-ell ouplings y djusting the gp etween the site nd the link ring wveguides. To engineer the negtive oupling, the position of the link rings (shown in red) re vertilly shifted. The link rings (shded green) orresponding to positive ouplings re not shifted. Inset shows mirosope imge of the plquette. unit ell, we rrnge the link rings suh tht φ for only one oupling term, while keeping the mplitude of oupling equl to γ. This results in net guge flux π threding the unit ell (Fig.). To implement topologil system with quntized qudrupole moment [], we relize D rry of these unit ells, oupled to their nerest neighors with oupling strength ±κ. Throughout the lttie, we hnge the sign of the inter-ell oupling κ, suh tht uniform guge flux π penetrtes ny plquette, mde of rry of site rings (see Figs.,, nd Fig.). When γ/κ <, tht is, when the inter-ell oupling is stronger thn the intr-ell oupling, the lttie hosts degenerte mid-gp sttes lolized t eh of the four orners (Fig.,e). These sttes re hrterized y topologilly invrint integers nd proteted ginst ertin disorders, due of the presene of sptil inversion symmetry, nd the two mirror symmetries (out x nd y xis) of the lttie whih do not ommute s result of the non-zero guge flux []. In the other se, tht is when γ/κ >, the lttie is topologilly trivil nd there re no sttes in the ndgp (Fig.h). In our experiment, we frite 5 5 rry of these unit ells, s shown in Fig.. We design the system to e in the topologil regime with the oupling strengths γ nd κ estimted to e 4.8() GHz nd 9.(8) GHz, suh tht γ/κ.7. To proe the presene of orner sttes in the lttie, we frite wveguide oupler t eh of the orners (Fig.). This llows us to ouple the lttie to lser nd mesure the power sorption, s funtion of the lser frequeny detuning (δν) from the ring resonne frequeny (ν) (see Supplementry Informtion for further detils). Furthermore, we use mirosope ojetive nd n infrred mer to diretly imge the sptil intensity profile in the lttie, s we sweep the lser frequeny. The mesured sorption spetr t the four orner sites re shown in Fig.d. We oserve very nrrow sorption peks inditing the presene of four isolted mid-gp sttes in the lttie (Fig.). Figure f shows the mesured sptil intensity profile in the lttie, integrted over the sorption peks. In greement with numeril simultion (Fig.e), we see the orner modes re remrkly lolized t the orner sites. However, ontrry to the theoretil predition (Fig.,), the sorption peks re shifted with respet to eh other, inditing tht the orner modes re not degenerte in frequeny. This is due the nnofrition proess whih introdues very strong disorder in the ring resonne frequenies. The upper ound on the stndrd devition in the ring resonne frequenies ws mesured to e 33 GHz whih is very signifint ompred to the nd-gp κ 58 GHz. In ddition, there is smll disorder in the oupling strengths γ nd κ whih ws estimted to e 3% of the men vlues, nd lso disorder of. (rdin) in the guge flux φ. Remrkly, even in presene of suh strong disorder whih is omprle to the nd-gp, the orner sttes re still present nd very lolized whih exhiits their topologil protetion. We note tht the zero energy in these mesurements orresponds to the resonne frequeny of prtiulr longitudinl mode of the ring resontors. To show the sene of orner sttes in trivil system,

Next, we demonstrte tht the oserved orner sttes re not rtifts due to some defets t the physil orners of the lttie. As efore, the wveguide ouplers for sorption mesurements re loted t the physil orners of the lttie. Fig.3, show the mesured sorption spetr. The spetr t orners C nd C 3 show single sorption pek nd the ssoited sptil intensity distriution (Fig.3d) shows lolized orner sttes t C nd C 3, onsistent with our previous oservtion. However, the spetr mesured t orners C nd C 4 show three sorption peks. The sptil intensity distriution orresponding to the middle sorption pek round zero frequeny detuning, in ft, shows exittion of lolized modes t the orners C nd C 4 of the qudrupole domin (Fig.3d). In ontrst, the intensity distriution in the other two sidends, wy from zero detuning, oupies the lttie sites outside the qudrupole domin (Fig.3e). The power sorption in the middle nd is lower reltive to the sidends, minly euse the orner sttes of the qudrupole re very wekly oupled to the physil orner. To further explore the signifine of topologil protetion of the oserved orner modes in the qudrupole system, we ompre them with those emerging in system with zero qudrupole moment. We frited very similr lttie with zero guge flux, tht is, where ll the ouplings re positive (Fig.4). The inter-ell nd the intr-ell ouplings in this lttie still orrespond to the topologil se (Fig.), tht is, γ/κ <. Beuse of the sene of the guge flux, the two mirror symmetries (out the x nd the y xis) ommute nd the net qudrupole moment is zero (see S.I.). Numeril simultion results, in the sene of disorder, show tht this system hosts zero-energy modes lolized t the orners, similr to those of the qudrupole system (Fig.4,,e). However, unlike the qudrupole system, the mesured sorption spetrum t the orner shows multi-mode struture inditing tht the orner sttes re not ompletely isolted from the ulk sttes (Fig.4d,f, dditionl dt in the S.I.). The mesured sptil intensity distriution onfirms tht these orner modes indeed ouple to the ulk modes of the lttie. This oservtion suggests tht these orner modes, in the zero guge flux lttie, re suseptile to the frition disorder nd re not topologilly proteted. This lk of roustness ginst disorder is lso evident in the energy spetrum of the devie, where there is no nd-gp t zero energy. Consequently, n on-site potentil disorder, whih in our experimentl setup is the most dominnt soure of disorder, n esily ouple these orner modes to the ulk modes loted ner zero energy (see supplementry informtion for more detils). In this work, we hve demonstrted n integrted photoni qudrupole topologil phse supporting roust orner sttes immune to disorder in oupling strengths nd on-site potentil. Our verstile integrted photonis pltform opens the route to explore even riher physis in the ontext of higherorder topologil phses, for exmple, those ssoited with different hoies of guge flux in the lttie or with symmetri oupling strengths. Moreover, y integrting tive fetures, e.g., using therml heters or eletro-opti modultors [3], our sheme ould llow seletive flux insertion or mnipultion of the orner or the edge modes of the system nd hene, the reliztion of diti hrge pumping in highorder topologil systems []. In ddition, there is disorder in the oupling strengths nd lso in the guge flux φ, whih is essentilly mnifesttion of the mismth etween link ring resonne frequenies. We used dd-drop filters (ADFs) to hrterize these disorders nd lso the oupling strengths γ nd κ. The dimensions (length, end rdius) of the ring resontors used in ADFs mthed extly the dimensions of those used in our D devies. But, to llow for independent mesurements of the oupling strengths, the ADFs hd different oupling gps etween the rings nd the input-output wveguides. The through nd the drop port spetr were mesured for five different ADFs (with different oupling strengths) frited on eh hip. The stndrd devition of the resonne frequenies ws lulted for eh hip nd then verged over ten hips (totl fifty ADFs), to give U 3.8 GHz. The mesured ontrst nd the ndwidth of the spetr yielded γ = 4.8 GHz nd κ = 9. GHz s the men vlues. The stndrd devition in the oupling strengths ws 4%. The stndrd devition in the guge flux φ ws lulted to e. using the estimted vlue of U. Also, the loss in the resontors ws estimted to e.8 GHz, with stndrd devition of %. EDGE EXCITATION FOR QUADRUPOLE DEVICE In ddition to the orner modes, the qudrupole topologil system lso exhiits lolized edge sttes ner δν = ±kpp [ nd 3]. The edge sttes n e proed using wveguide ouplers t the edges of the lttie (Fig.S3). Fig.S3 shows simulted nd mesured power sorption spetr t the edges nd the orresponding sptil intensity profiles in the lttie. In ontrst to simultion, we oserve two rod sorption peks ner the expeted ulk nd positions ( δν = ± kpp ), inditing

This is euse there is no ndgp etween the edge nd the ulk nds nd therefore, the on-site potentil disorder in the experimentl system n ouple the two nds. D LATTICE WITH ZERO GAUGE FLUX d..5 e FIG. S4. Mesured power sorption spetr t the four orners of the devie with ll positive ouplings, tht is, φ =. -e Corresponding sptil intensity profiles showing oupling of orner nd ulk modes. The intensity profiles re integrted over the sorption peks. To highlight the roustness of the topologil orner sttes in qudrupole system, we ompre them ginst those emerging in system with no guge flux (φ = ) whih results in zero qudrupole moment. Numeril simultion results for suh system (φ = ) show shrply lolized orner sttes in the sene of disorder (Fig.4,e of the min text). However, the mesured sorption spetr (Fig.S4) show multi-mode ehvior nd re onsistent with the mesured intensity profiles whih revel signifint oupling of orner modes to the ulk modes. This lerly demonstrtes tht the orner sttes in system with zero qudrupole moment re not roust ginst disorder, unlike those ssoited with qudrupole topologil phses.
10 4 TOPOLOGICAL TRANSITION REALIZED BY VARYING THE GAUGE FLUX IN THE LATTICE The proposed integrted silion photoni pltform llows one to relize even riher vriety of topologil systems y tuning the phse of hopping mplitudes. As n interesting illustrtion, we exmine here the trnsition etween the two-dimensionl tight-inding system with ll positive ouplings with ungpped spetrum nd the stndrd qudrupole insultor hrterized y the gpped nds s the mgnitude of flux through eh plquette of the lttie is vried from to π. The shemtis of the system under study is shown in Fig. S5. We ssume tht the ouplings γ nd κ re purely rel, while some of the ouplings in the lttie re omplex nd hve n extr hopping phse: γ e iφ nd κ e iφ. Note tht this geometry ensures φ flux through eh squre plquette of the lttie. The momentum spe Hmiltonin of the periodi struture reds γ + κe iky γ + κe ikx H(k x, k y ) = γ + κe iky e iφ (γ + κe ikx ) e iφ (γ + κe ikx ) γ + κe iky, (S) γ + κe ikx γ + κe iky where k x nd k y re the Crtesin projetions of the Bloh wve vetor. Similrly to the rtile min text, we hoose the rtio of the hopping mplitudes γ/κ =.7. Zero flux se orresponds to the tight-inding system with ll positive ouplings whih n e viewed s D nlogue of the Su-Shrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. The spetrum of this system hs no ndgp t zero energy nd for tht reson does not feture ny roust orner sttes. However, when some of the ouplings re mde omplex suh tht nonzero guge flux ppers, the ndgp opens nd the degenerte orner sttes emerge, s shown in Fig. S5. The width of the ndgp grows s the guge flux is further inresed up to π, thus enhning the roustness of the orner sttes. The system lso hosts one-dimensionl edge sttes t δν ±κ, tht re lolized t the sides of the squre nd wekly depend on the flux Multipole Moments Q orner p x,y q xy FIG. S5. The shemti of tight-inding system under study relized s n rry of evnesently oupled ring resontors. Coupling is ensured vi the uxiliry rings. Numerilly omputed evolution of the system spetrum s the guge flux is vried from to π. Opening of topologil gp is oserved nd the orner sttes develop. The size of the system is 5 5 unit ells, γ/κ =.7. Corner hrge, edge dipole polriztions nd ulk qudrupole polriztion depending on the flux π. The lultion hs een performed for N = 3 unit ells, nd γ/κ =.7. In order to fix the sign of the qudrupole momentum the digonl energies t the digonl sites of eh unit ells were set to ±δ = ± 4 κ Ref. [3] Even more instrutive piture is provided y the evolution of dipole nd qudrupole polriztions in the system. The dependene of the polriztions on the flux is shown in Fig. S5. The orner hrge Q orner hs een lulted for lrge D system with open oundry onditions t ll 4 sides. It ws found to e equl to / independent of the flux. The dipole polriztions p x = p y were evluted following the proedure in Ref. [3]. This lultion involves opening the oundries long x, using periodi oundry long y diretion, nd evluting the dipole polriztions from the verged positions of the Wnnier enters. Next, the ulk qudrupole momentum hs een evluted from the eqution. Q orner = p x + p y q xy. (S) In greement with the generl theory, Fig. S5 demonstrtes, tht for the qudrupolr insultor, where φ = π, the orner hrge is ontriuted y oth quntized dipole polriztions nd ulk qudrupole momentum. When the flux is unequl to π or, the vlue of q xy in generl is not quntized [3]. When the flux dereses the ulk qudrupole momentum vnishes nd eomes zero in the D SSH se, the edge polriztions derese s well, ut the orner hrge stys the sme. Our lultion indites tht
11 the sle on whih the qudrupole momentum hnges from to / is determined y the smll on-site potentil ±δ = ± 4 κ. The energies δ, δ, δ, δ in the lokwise order re dded to the sites of the unit ell in order to fix the sign of the orner hrges nd the qudrupole momentum [3]. The se of zero flux is degenerte nd requires speil re, sine the D SSH system is not n insultor, i.e. it lks nd gp. Our findings of p x = p y = /4, Q orner = / nd q xy = n e lso understood from the results for the nisotropi D SSH model with κ x κ y tht hs nd gp nd well-defined polriztions quntized y hirl nd inversion symmetries. Nmely, in the nisotropi D SSH se with κ x > κ y one hs p x = / nd p y =, while for κ y > κ x the polriztions re p y = / nd p x = [3]. The isotropi model with flux tending to zero is n intermedite se where the edge polriztions hve to e equl. Thus, verging the results for κ x > κ y nd κ x < κ y we otin p x = p y = /4 = Q orner /, q xy =, in greement with the rigorous lultion in Fig. S5. The essene of the topologil trnsition s funtion of the guge flux φ n e understood with the following symmetry rguments. The qudrupole topologil phse is proteted y the refletion symmetries long the x nd y xes, denoted y M x nd M y respetively. In order to hve proteted topologil phse nd quntized qudrupole moments, one needs to stisfy the following neessry onditions (see Ref. [3] for derivtion):. [M x, H] = [M y, H] =, i.e., the system Hmiltonin H ommutes with the two refletion symmetries.. [M x, M y ], i.e., the two refletion symmetries do not ommute. This ondition ensures tht the edge sttes re gpped, whih is equivlent to gpped Wnnier nds (see Ref. [3] for the definition nd disussion). It is strightforwrd to see tht ondition is only stisfied t φ =, π. Therefore, for ny φ in etween, the qudrupole moment q xy is not quntized nd hene not topologil proteted, s indited in Fig. S5. On the other hnd, t the φ = point, ondition is not stisfied, while it is stisfied t the φ = π point due to the introdution of guge flux. Therefore, the φ = point generilly hs gpless edge sttes, or equivlently gpless Wnnier nds (in the nisotropi se κ x κ y ), leding to unproteted orner sttes. The isotropi se κ x = κ y is speil sine the ulk nd is gpless s stted ove, so the Wnnier nd is not well defined. In this se, the ft tht the orner sttes re unproteted n e ttriuted to the sene of the ulk nd gp. 5 [] Benlzr, W. A., Bernevig, B. A. & Hughes, T. L. Quntized eletri multipole insultors.
