2 This plant has bloomed three years in open under regular garden condition without any protection. Also has bloomed well under glass. Buds lovely 10ng 1 opening very slowly, and after many days will shgw"a fe'" "Jhlte stamen. Flmler is heavy and petals wavey, it is never flat or recurved. Fetals numerous and as seen in picture inter petals are slightly pointed. Typical flovler opens by unfurling petals from bud usually three at a time giving a very lovely effect. First bloom, January 1946, but the next two seasons has bloomed in December. In three seasons it has never failed to open on account of cold weather. Bloom very regular in size, four to four and three-quarter inches. Color, a lovely cream v;thite '\dth very distinct yellovl cast in throat. Always has at least a small pink fleck. Some flowers have a pink petal or two. Sports readily' and I have already had many double center flo"rers blooming and a few peony forms. No pink sport as yet, but I think Ci strong possibly of sl1ch. ~his could be a seedling of Duches~ of Southerland, though my records are incomplete.

J. i}u:i'1.mb t University of Florida Gainesville, Florida Dear Dr. \AJilmot: Thank you for your letter. Iguess a difference of 0plnlon is permissable between friends especially since ours are so minor. I do respect your judgement highly as regards possibilities of new varieties especially as to it being worth while to propogate them. The varieties I sent you have not been distributed but have been closely watched for a few years. Diddy for four years, the Hibiscus (and this was only as to origin as seedling from Hibiscus of Magnolia and not as a suggested name) for two years. I think a plant should be tried for several years and approved by the society before (note this) it is put on the market as a new variety, and in that case would not have been distributed. I don't guess this could be done but it would stop a lot of iflferior varieties being sold with fancy names~ We have three or four other topnotch seedlings under observation for three years and I am sure they are not out as yet. Three of these I am sure are superior in some respects to.known varieties. The twm I sent you v!ere just to needle you for an opinion as I can't decide if they are good enough or not. I~ the Hibiscus Seedling repeats this year, (it had some buds) I am sure that it make the grade as it is a lovely shade of red. I had a good Kodachrome of this but failed to include it. I have several good seedlings which we are not propogating they are as good as some established varieties but not better,

You know I have worked rather hard trying to get a few worth while new ones and only wish that you were close enough for frequent consultation. I am sorry that I did not note the green slip for the A.N.A. but will include it with this letter. Please send me a few additional applications. Very' trul~~~~:~ f~~;:;,v1d. HGN/jy
