idiv Conference 2017 Summaries Demonstrations
D-Denz Joachim Denzler Joachim Denzler (Digital Vision, FSU) - CANCELLED Computer Vision Tools for Visual Monitoring Tasks During the demo session, I like to provide some insights into existing tools for visual monitoring. The demos include: 1. Real-Time Object Classification from Camera Images 2. Bird Species Classification from a Single Image 3. Life-Long Learning Framework for Visual Detection and Recognition 4. Active Learning Annotation Tool for Visual Recognition Tasks 5. Any-time Classification Considering Time-Budgets for Processing Images 6. Anomaly Detection in Multivariate Time Series Data Most of the tools are available as open source from our homepage or Gitrepositories. Details can be found on the projects section; videos and additional information are available through our Google+ page
D-Dunk Susanne Dunker Susanne Dunker (Physiological Diversity, UFZ; idiv) Experience physiological diversity below 100 µm in a playful way Yes The methodological approach allows investigating particles of various origins Experience diversity of particles below 100 µm of various origins (phytoplankton, moss spores, pollen and plant nuclei) Fast and efficient track of thousands of microscopic images Describe morphological and physiological diversity at microscopic scale Discussion Independent of origin of the species it is possible to investigate single particle traits Conclusion Discover homo- and heterogeneity of cells with various origins (phytoplankton, moss spores, pollen and plant nuclei)
D-Frei Martin Freiberg Martin Freiberg (Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity, UL) Towards a global visualisation of species diversity Yes. The projects connects botany, zoology, microbiology, mycology etc. as well as informatics and citizen science A compilation of about 2 Mio species names taxonomically described has been used to construct a two-dimensional map using an adapted Voronoi calculation. Online available databanks as well as publications focusing on taxonomy and phylogeny were used to compile a Leipzig Consensus List of valid species names which then was used in the Voronoi calculation. A first taxamap of all species is available as well as a phylomap with reproducable phylogenetic coordinates for Tracheophyta. Discussion The proposed access to species information provides a refreshing new visual insight into diversity for specialists and citizens. Conclusion Help and support is needed to fill the empty information cells and to keep the information updated. The aim is a proposed online-tool called LifeGate
D-Gers Katharina Gerstner Katharina Gerstner (sdiv, idiv) Mobsim App: A shiny app for visualizing basic biodiversity relationships across spatial scales see Ignite Talks for another contribution by the author No Spatially explicit simulation tools foster the understanding of biodiversity changes in space and time and across scales. The interactive shiny application visualizes basic biodiversity relationships of species communities simulated with the R-package mobsim. Users study relationships between key community properties, i.e. total numbers of individuals and species, relative abundance distributions, clumping. Discussion The simplicity and control provided by mobsim can make it a useful didactic tool that facilitates a more rigorous interpretation of real world data. Conclusion Shiny apps are potentially useful for science communication, interactive teaching, and demonstrating R-package functionalities. Co-Authors Felix May, Jonathan Chase Infrastructure needed One table, one projector, one flipchart
D-Kret Lena Kretz Lena Kretz (Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity, UL) Leaf surface traits alter sediment retention on floodplain plants No Sediment is transported downstream by floods and is retained on floodplains. The surface of plants plays an important role for the sediment retention. Therefore we conduct a flume experiment to identify the key surface traits of plant leaves that are responsible for sediment retention. We expect the traits hairiness, roughness and stability as key traits. Co-Authors - Carolin Seele (Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity, UL) - Christian Wirth (Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity, UL; idiv, Leipzig) Set-Up
D-Mars Melissa Marselle Melissa Marselle (Ecosystem Services, idiv; UFZ) - CANCELLED Use of nature to buffer the effect of stressful life events on mental health see Into the Future session for another contribution by the author Outline I would like to demonstrate the restorative benefits of nature (or how nature can influence mental health and wellbeing) to idiv conference participants. To do this, I would like to have conference participants do a short, lead group walk (20 minutes?) around the green spaces of the UFZ. Before and after the walk, I will ask participants to complete a short questionnaire about their attention and emotional wellbeing. After the walk, we can have a short discussion about attendees about their experiences of the walk, and I can explain the two theories of restorative environments. If the demonstration happens on the first day or early the second day of the conference, I can analyze the questionnaire responses and do a short report back to attendees at the end of the conference on a piece of paper.
D-Wäld Jana Wäldchen Jana Wäldchen (Biogeochemical Integration, MPI-BGC) The Flora Incognita Plant Image Capture app: Flora Capture Yes. Joint project between Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (botanical part) and TU Ilmenau (computer science part) As part of the research project ""Flora Incognita"" a method for semiautomatic plant determination via mobile devices will be developed For training of the applied image recognition technology, the research team has to rely on an extensive database of standardized images of plants We ve developed the app Flora Capture, that allows users to contribute to our image database by taking photos and upload them to our our server. Discussion At this point, the app is not intended to be used as an identification tool. It is rather designed to build a large image database. Conclusion We look forward to a broad support from the citizen. Co-Authors Dr. Michael Rzanny Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry Prof. Dr. Patrick Mäder (JP) Dr. Marco Seeland M.Sc David Wiesner M.Sc. Nedal Alaqraa
