9 1818: The Beginnings of the University 1818: King William I of Württemberg established an agricultural research and teaching institute in the empty Hohenheim castle on the initiative of his wife Katherine. The aim was to be better safeguarded against famine. In 1904 the academy was made into an agricultural college and in 1967 into the University of Hohenheim.
