Energy Efficieny... covering domestic consumption, buildings, public lighting, cooling systems and urban transport. MITIGATION Megacity Research Project TP. Ho Chi Minh GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE Urban Environment Regional Impacts, "filtered" through natural, physical and socio-economic conditions Responses Urban Development Knowledge, tools, capacities and networks for adaptation measures ADAPTATION The principles of adaptation policy will serve as the starting point for the research work in HCMC. The work will focus on improving the ability of decision-makers to manage the information relevant to adaptation and on evaluating the range of technological options for adaptation in urban planning and design. The strategies do not only focus on spatial aspects of the built environment, but refer to the multidimensional context of housing provision, contributing to the social, economic, and ecological dimension of urban sustainability. Adaptation of urban land, urban structures and urban development concepts to foreseeable climate changes as well as to weather extreme, whose intensity is increasing, and which are already perceptible today. 1. Starting Phase 1st Stage: The Balance of Urban Growth and Redevelopment in Ho Chi Minh City Sustainable Housing Policies for Megacities of Tomorrow housing provision as key element for an overall sustainable urban development strategies for housing provision, taking into account the balance of redevelopment in the inner city districts and the urban expansion at the periphery multidimensional context of housing provision, contributing to the social, economical, and ecological dimension of urban sustainability
Results, Cooperation Megacity Research Project TP. Ho Chi Minh core principles a) Integrative planning approach b) Orientation towards application and learning positive evaluations by the German Government prolongation of the project with the main focus on climate change to a duration of five years active cooperation between the German and Vietnamese partners has intensified of the scientific and practical dialogue a transdisciplinary scientific cooperation is absolutely necessary to achieve all targets. 4. 14 Major Objectives Megacity Research Project TP. Ho Chi Minh focus on housing provision as key element and prerequisite for an overall sustainable urban development formulation of strategies for housing provision, taking into account the balance of redevelopment in the inner city districts and the urban expansion at the periphery multidimensional context of housing provision, contributing to the social, economical, and ecological dimension of urban sustainability job generating urban planning urban management for liveable neighbourhoods, oriented on the mixed structure in urban density with short distances and integrated technical and social infrastructure and greenery for the improvement of local climate 12. Housing Policy
13. Neighbourhood
uncontrolled urban growth without concept, partially without required social and technical infrastructure pushed by illegal settlement and real estate speculation partially lack of: technical infrastructure, adequate access to means of transportation, facilities for health and education, green space existing housing shortage enforced by permanent migration on a high level 14. Redevelopment, Upgrading Land Surface Temperatures ranging from 23 0 C to 34 0 C
15. Housing Typologies, Prototype
16. Technologies for Housing and Environmental Protection reduction of up to 15% of energy consumption by utilizing appropriate construction materials and new technology thermal insulation, ventilation, optimizing energy generation and distribution, changing consumer habits can significantly reduce consumption costs

Summary Megacity Research Project TP. Ho Chi Minh Principal aims of the main phase of the research project are: To develop an improved understanding of the consequences of climate change for the urban area and how HCMC can adapt to climate change To develop systematic methods for risk-based urban planning and decision-making at the local level in HCMC To explore policy options for urban planning in response to climate change, with focus on changes in urban governance and urban form To improve the interaction between natural scientists, urban and environmental planners and other relevant stakeholders To initiate stakeholder involvement, awareness rising, capacity-building in order to develop community-based mitigation and adaptation strategies for the urban environment in HCMC 18.
