Provisional revision of the MG4 Alopecurus pratensis - Sanguisorba officinalis community Hilary Wallace and Mike Prosser Ecological Surveys (Bangor) and Floodplain Meadows Partnership (Open University)
BACKGROUND The mesotrophic grassland communities of the NVC are based on very small sample numbers MG4 = 22 quadrats MG8 = 15 quadrats Many surveyors were experiencing difficulties in fitting their field data to the described units Considerably more data have been collected on floodplain meadows than were available at the time of publication of the NVC in In particular work of Gowing et al where 3910 vegetation quadrats were linked to soil water levels through hydrological models. This work demonstrated substantial floristic variation within many of the NVC communities linked to soil moisture regime.
Since that time, particular research projects, such as the Defra-funded study of the hydrological control of biodiversity in flood plain meadows (Gowing et al. 2002), have generated further substantial amounts of new data and a revision of the mesotrophic grasslands within both Lowland Meadows and Coastal & Floodplain Grazing Marsh is pressing. (Rodwell et al. 2007). The FMP steering group requested that this work be undertaken in two stages a revision of the MG4 community a revision of the damper communities encountered on floodplains
SOURCES OF DATA FOR THE MG4 REVISION Source No. sites No. quadrats Gowing et al Other OU monitoring programmes NVC mapping exercises Map of all sites used in analysis
DATA ANALYSIS Twinspan analysis of 4746 quadrats Five cut levels (0, 1, 2, 5, and 33) No downweighting of rare species Six divisions giving 64 endgroups Endgroup amalgamation using Czekanowski co-efficient of similarity
RESULTS 11 clusters resulted from the progressive amalgamation of the 64 endgroups Closest NVC community MG6 Lolium perenne - Cynosurus cristatus grassland 1 MG4 Alopecurus pratensis-sanguisorba officinalis grassland MG8 Caltha palustris-cynosurus cristatus grassland 3 MG4/8 Intermediate between MG4 and MG8 1 MG7C Cx-Ag-Sn Lolium perenne-alopecurus pratensis- Festuca pratensis grassland. Filipendula variant of Gowing et al Carex spp-agrostis stolonifera grassland of Cox and Leach 1995 Number of clusters Four clusters, comprising 2503 quadrats, were allocated to the MG4 community. The remainder have been incorporated into the analysis of damper floodplain meadow communities
