The pond is a SINC for its great crested newt population. This site represents the likely foraging area for a newt population. The site is an amenity space, similar to a village green. The grassland is correspondingly improved and shows signs of past re-seeding. The western half of the site has a short, amenity sward with low wildlife interest. The eastern half however is maintained at meadowlength and, has developed a greater species and structural diversity. There are planted trees within the site and modern hedgerows around the edges. 5 Bentley ond Grassland SU East Hampshire District Council 19/08/2014 Joel Miller Site description The site is an area of grassland located around Bentley ond. The pond is a SINC for its great crested newt population. This site represents the likely foraging area for a newt population. The site is an amenity space, similar to a village green. The grassland is correspondingly improved and shows signs of past re-seeding. The western half of the site has a short amenity sward with low wildlife interest. The eastern half however is maintained at meadow-length and has developed a greater species and structural diversity. There are planted trees within the site and modern hedgerows around the edges. Management The current management has allowed a newt foraging habitat to develop in the eastern half of the site. This is impressive for such a public amenity site. Continuing the management of ensuring that arisings are removed from the ground after mowing should increase the wildlife interest of the site and adjacent Bentley ond. Area description Area 1 MG6a Lolium perenne-cynosurus cristatus grassland, typical sub-community (IHS GI0.GM2) The sward is medium-length to rough in parts. It is formed of grasses such as cock sfoot, bents, yorkshire fog, rye grass and meadow foxtail. The most frequent herbs are clovers, hogweed, buttercups, sorrel, ribwort plantain and docks. ther species noted include greater bird'sfoot trefoil, black knapweed, lesser stitchwort and sweet vernal grass. Area 2 MG7 Lolium perenne grassland (GI0.GM23) The sward here is lawn length and less diverse in species. The main species are rye grass, cock sfoot, clovers, daisy, bents, dandelion, Yorkshire-fog and selfheal. Area 3 W24 ubus fruticosus-holcus lanatus under-scrub (IHS WB2.W11.WM7) Along the eastern edge of the pond is a vegetation dominated by bramble and stinging-nettle.
