1 SOCIAL STUDIES MID-TERM EXAM REVIEW FORMAT: There will be 5 sections on the mid-term: 1) multiple choice 2) Geography knowledge and skills 3) Vocabulary terms 4) short answer 5) long answer/essay 6) primary source reading (enrichment only) Please use the review notes on my website as a basis for the answer. Key Terms: You are responsible for defining all the key terms from each of the chapters so far. Define the following terms: The words below can either come in simple definition questions, multiple choice, matching, or short/long answers. Simply knowing what the word means without knowing the importance of it might not be enough to help you answer all the questions on the exam. The Fertile Crescent Section: Define the terms in the table below on a separate piece of paper. Then, answers the questions below. How was the polytheism that the Sumerian city-states practiced similar (to each city-state)? How was it different?

In which empire(s) did bazaars and caravans become especially important? 8. Why was Hammurabi s Code so important? 9. Why was Hammurabi such an important leader? 10. Compare/contrast cuneiform with the Phoenician writing system. 11. Of all the civilizations/empires we studied during this term, which one(s) was/were monotheistic (worshipped one God)? What was the name(s) of the religion(s)?

3 Ancient Egypt Section: Define the terms in the table below on a separate piece of paper. Then, answers the questions below. Provide examples to support your answer. 5. Name one important figure in Egyptian history who acted as a regent for another influential person. 6. Describe Ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife.

4 7. Describe the steps of mummification. Why was this practice important in Egyptian society? 8. How were the writing practices/material used in ancient Egypt different from those in Mesopotamia? Describe what happened in the old kingdom: how it started, what happened in it and how it ended. Describe what happened in the middle kingdom: how it started, what happened in it and how it ended. Describe what happened in the new kingdom: how it started, what happened in it and how it ended.

5 Mapping Section Use the map on my website to help with this section if you need to. Name the different oceans, continents, and hemispheres. Where is the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, and the (latitude/longitude). How many degrees of longitude and latitude there are and which direction they go on a map? What and where is the Prime Meridian? What and where is the Equator?

6 Five Themes of Geography Name the five themes of geography and what they mean/ are used for What do you use to tell a place s absolute location? How is telling a relative location different to telling its absolute location? What are physical characteristics of a location? Give some examples. What the human characteristics of a location? Give some examples. Give three examples of how Human-environment interaction has been a good thing. Give three examples of how Human-environment interaction has been a bad thing.

7 What are the three things that come under the movement? Give two examples of each Describe Kuwait with the 5 themes of Geography. Give at least three types.

8 Long Answer/Essay Section: You need to be able to write a 4 paragraph essay on each of the following civilizations/empires: Babylonia, Assyria, Phoenicia, Sumer. Use a separate piece of paper to write your essays. Focus on the points below for your essay, although you can add other points that you feel are relevant. 1. Where it was located (from what region to what region) and geography 2. Characteristics of their social classes 3. Achievements 4.
