5 To Build or Not to Build: That is the Question Directions: In teams of three or four students, brainstorm examples for each of the following categories. A. Name or draw pictures of human features and activities related to geography. (Dams and fishing are both possible examples because a dam is a man-made feature and fishing is a human activity.) B. Once given your environmental influence (tundra, desert, river, grassland, volcano, earthquake, tropical climate or monsoon) list all of the human features and activities that could be affected by that environmental influence. C. Create a display using pictures, symbols, and words on a chart paper that you will share with the class. 5

To understand the reason that early peoples settled near rivers, use an ancient river civilization map to answer the questions. 1. 10 Traveling through Time GOAL: The purpose of this assignment is for you to research and analyize the achievements and legacies of the 4 river valley civilizations. POINTS: 100 points total (see checklist for specific point breakdown) DUE: MATERIALS: textbook, Internet, art supplies, paper, pencil CLASS TIME: PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For this project you will complete a series of steps. You will turn in a completed project packet and a container of artifacts. The container can be unique and should reflect the river valley civilizations culture. Inside the container will be 2 mini-artifact per civilization. Artifacts can be symbols, drawings, clay models, etc. that represent an achievement/accomplishment of a particular river valley civilization. You will also be responsible for a typed description of the artifact and why you feel it is important. 10
