1 The Ultimate-Super-Cool-World Studies-Awesome- Field Museum-Scavenger Hunt Name: Names of group members: date of visit: class period: Ok. So are you sure you know what you signed up for. You asked for a scavenger hunt and a scavenger hunt you have received. Follow the steps and enjoy! You get to go all around the museum. The questions go in order and I will let you know when you should be on a different level. Use the words of places, people, and things as guides. look for those clues as you go through the exhibits Part 1: Inside Ancient Egypt BEGIN: Main level, Inside Ancient Egypt. You will descend through a tomb and find 20 mummies, an ancient market place and more! I. Reading Timelines.Check out the timeline outside the exhibit. 1. Who wrote about Egypt in 1000 BC? (name) 2. When did Egypt become mainly Christian? 3. Traces of Ancient Egypt exist today explain the connection to modern languages. II. Enter the tomb! 4. Nile Brings Life to Egypt. How did deserts protect the dead? 5. The tomb is a reconstruction.whose tomb is it? How did it get to Chicago and the Field Museum? 6. Define relief, How were they created? 7. Why was the tomb shared? 8. How often would priests make offerings/prayers? 9. What do the hieroglyphics on the false doors say? Why? 1

2 III. Take the spiral staircase down to the burial chamber (you have to go up to go down) 10. Even after plundered, why and what would archaeologists look for as clues of ancient civilizations? 11. How did the tombs location help and hurt them? 12. Read the thief s confessions. Explain why robbing a tomb was considered sacrilege. (Use the evidence from the confession!) 13. It s Mummy Time. Find some mummies and mummified parts. Describe their appearance. 14. How can museums and museum curators identify false Egyptian artifacts? 15. How did papyrus help make The Book of the Dead and the afterlife available to everyone in Egypt? Explain. 16. T/F Wooden models became real in the afterlife. 17. Which 2 Middle Kingdom innovations were carried into the New Kingdom period? Identify and describe, 18. Explain: How do shroud s functions remain the same but the decorations differ through time? 4 You should now be on the ground level. Go find one of my favorite things 1. Find the Maneaters. Explain the significance behind this exhibit. We re pretty much done on the ground level after this. So head back up! Next, we are off to Africa, so back to the main level. Part II: Welcome to Africa I. Senegal and Intro 1. You start off in Senegal. How do people drink tea in Senegal? Explain. 2. Why do people in Senegal speak French? Worship Allah? 3. Check out the map section how many languages are spoken in Africa? Do the boundaries of languages match the country names (do they have the same borders?) Why or why not? II. Cameroon 3. Explain how you see German colonial influence in the palace. 4. List the symbols of protection found at the entrances of home around the world. 5. Take a look at the grassfields art. how did the art show people s social status? III. Nigeria 6. Check out the section on Benin. What is Benin? How did geography lead to tragedy? What happened? 4

5 7. What is the significance of the tusk to story telling? IV. Sahara/Caravans- you will be exploring the culture of the region 8. What does a woman s headcloth represent? 9. FIND the bike that seems a bit overloaded. where would you find this bike and why? Explain. 10. Check out this picture: What made these unusual patterns? Explain. 11. Collecting water in the desert is hard, hard work. Women mostly do this work how does this leave women out of society? Explain 12. What is a caravan? Define 13. Dung Beetles who knew? Why are they so important, explain their integral role in the savannah. What is a scarab? IV. Other Ecosystems mountains, desert, lakes, Afro- Alpine 14. SNAMP Take a selfie next to the puma! Print it or gram it, #fieldmuseumhunt 15. Name one thing you learn about each of the different regions. IV. By now, you be passing the Lions of Tsavo, and then head into the hall of mammals.take a walk through and enjoy the natural wonders 16. Summarize the story of the Lions. Why were they significant and how did they come to the Field Museum? 17. Check out the primates and monkeys. The Colobus monkeys are one of my favorite specifies, I think they re adorable. Part III: Ancient Americas Walk across the main hall to the next exhibit. Have fun! Part I: A trip through all the ancient American regions and history 1. Read: Who were the first Americans? Where did they come from? 2. Explain 2 different theories that are used to describe how people migrated to the Americas. Draw the possible routes on the map below. 6
