25 Seasonal Variations Future precipitation is greater than current in the winter and less than current in the summer. Snowfall decreases in Oct., Nov. April, May and June but increases in December, January, and February. Rainfall increases in the winter and decreases in the summer. Soil moisture dries out in the summer and moistens in the winter, especially above 3000 meters, where snow is resident for most of the year. Evapo-tranpiration is small in the winter but increases rapidly during the spring snowmelt in the future simulation, and is higher than current in the summer at elevations above 3000 meters (soil moisture high at that elevation due to reduced period of evaporation and colder temperatures).

26 Changes in Seasonality Snowmelt starts two weeks earlier in the future simulation and ends three weeks earlier than current. The early end of snowmelt reduces runoff significantly in June as well as the longer period for evaporation.

27 Changes in Snowfall, Snowcover and SWE due to climate change Snowfall increases through April 1 due to moister storms. Snowcover decreases by 15% by April 1 due to the enhanced melting of SWE at lower elevations in a warmer climate. SWE similar in the future as the present through February due to the enhances snowfall amount at high elevations compensating for the melting of falling snow and snowpack at lower elevations. SWE decreases by 25% by April 1 due to the early onset of warmer temperatures in a warmer climate.

33 Impact of Warming on the Annual Water Budget for the Headwaters Q = Precip ET (7 year annual average) ET is increased by 45 mm (+10.5%) Precip is increased by 40 mm (+8 %) Net change in runoff ( Q): - 5mm (-5 %) Both Precipitation and ET increases, but ET increases more leading to a decrease in runoff.

34 CMIP5 Model-simulated Changes in 21 st Century, RCP4.5 Precipitation Soil Moisture x CMIP5 suggests the Colorado Rockies water cycle will have the following changes: Precipitation: +3% Soil Moisture: -6% Evaporation: +6% Runoff: Runoff -12% WRF-PGW approach suggests the Colorado Rockies water cycle will have the following changes: Precipitation: +8.0% Soil Moisture: 0% Evaporation: +10.5% Evaporation Runoff: -5% What about Thailand? Precipitation:?% Soil Moisture:?% Evaporation:?% Runoff:?% The simulation of orographic convection may be crucial for proper estimation of future precipitation.

35 Synthesis: How do these results compare to other regional predictions of Colorado River flow? Previous studies (Chrisiensen and Lettemaier 07, Hoerling et. al, Dai et. al, Seager et. al) suggest that the increase in evaporative demand due to warming will outpace potential increases in precipitation subsequently driving increased aridity in the West. Runoff predicted to decrease by 5 to 45%. Current results suggest only small changes in runoff if storm tracks don t change in the future.. Estimation of ET, however is still an issue as well as any changes in storm tracks.. WRF-PGW

36 Conclusions Both precipitation and evapo-transpiration increase under a warmer, moister climate. The evaporation fraction increases and the runoff efficiency decreases. Note: Summer precipitation decreases, however, yielding a smaller increase in precipitation than anticipated. Without this effect runoff might be positive. Evapo-transpiration increases more than precipitation, yielding a negative change in runoff. Note, however, the uncertainty in the parameterization of evapo-transpiration is large and can easily change the sign of the future runoff estimate (a 5% uncertainty in ET could yield a positive runoff). Future research needs to focus on reducing this uncertain as noted by Vano et al. (2011).
