3 NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an agency in charge of America s space program. Space exploration provides opportunities to make advancements in science and technology.
4 International Space Station (ISS) International Space Station is a research facility assembled in orbit around Earth Is build of a set of communicating pressurized modules connected to a truss It is powered by the Sun Orbits the Earth once every 90 minutes
5 ISS Project Joint project between five space agencies National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, United States) Russian Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos, Russian Federation) Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA, Japan) Canadian Space Agency (CSA, Canada) European Space Agency (ESA, Europe)
6 16 years of ISS ISS Provides a permanent human presence in space Thousands of experiments are running on the ISS at any one time, and many of these have direct connotations for counterparts on Earth. This includes medical research, physical sciences, and developing new materials.
7 ISS Communicating Modules Zarya (launched 20 November 1998) Unity Module (launched 4 December 1998, also known as Node 1) Zvezda (launched 12 July 2000) Destiny Laboratory Module (launched 7 February 2001) Columbus orbital facility (launched 7 February 2008) Japanese Experiment Module, also known as Kibo (launched in multiple flights between ) The truss and solar panels are also a large part of the station. 9 Unity ISS module Unity was carried into orbit as the primary cargo of the Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS- 88, the first Space Shuttle mission dedicated to assembly of the station. On December 6, 1998
10 THE FIRST ISS RESIDENTS Expedition 1 was the first long-duration stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The three-person crew stayed aboard the station for 136 days, from November 2000 to March It was the beginning of an uninterrupted human presence on the station which still continues, as of November Expedition 2, which also had three crew members, immediately followed Expedition 1. 12 How long does it take to get to ISS? The Soyuz TMA-13M launch on May 2014 has a 6 hour trip duration! A Russian Soyuz capsule usually takes at least two days to rendezvous with the ISS, because of the carefully timed dance of manoeuvres that must take place for a spaceship to safely meet the orbiting laboratory. Using a new launch process, three astronauts have now made the trip in just under 6 hours.
13 Expedition 41 to ISS The Soyuz TMA-14M rocket is launched with Expedition 41 Soyuz Commander Alexander Samokutyaev, Flight Engineer Elena Serova, and Flight Engineer Barry Wilmore, Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. They will spend the next five and a half months aboard the International Space Station.
14 Expedition 42 Launch to the ISS Date: Nov. 23, :59 p.m. Eastern Launching on Soyuz 41 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, Soyuz 41 will take Terry Virts, Anton Shkaplerov and Samantha Cristoforetti to the International Space Station.
