5 Aeolus: Mission Objectives Scientific objectives To improve the quality of weather forecasts; To advance our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and climate processes; Explorer objectives Demonstrate space-based Doppler Wind LIDARs potential for operational use. Observation means: Provide global measurements of horizontal wind profiles in the troposphere and lower stratosphere Payload ALADIN: Atmospheric LAser Doppler INstrument ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use Aeolus Cal/Val Rehearsal Workshop, Meteo France, Toulouse, 28/03/2017 Slide 5

13 Residual Major Risk and Mitigations Thermal Vacuum Test: First time to verify laser performance after coupling with Laser Cooling System and vibration testing: potential thermal and alignment issues; Margin on heater and cooling power to adjust thermal setpoint; Careful flatness and stiffness assessment prior to LCS mechanical coupling; Lasers and Optical Bench already exposed to higher loads. Risk of LIC on vacuum exposed optical surface due to material outgassing in confined vacuum chamber: Addition of an optical saver in front of output window; Development, by DLR-Stuttgart, of an ozone cleaning process for telescope M2 in case of need; Schedule risk due to many parallel preparation activities, including CSL facility readiness, and complex test execution process: Several dedicated working groups established to focus attention and to solve anticipated problems off the critical path; Facility blank test, test equipment bake-out and test debugging in advance of satellite flight test.
