1 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS ARISING FROM FLAT VIRTUAL KNOT INVARIANTS rxiv: v1 [mth.gt] 14 Mr 2018 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN Astrct. We introduce two sequences of two-vrile polynomils {L n Kt, l)} n=1 nd {F n Kt, l)} n=1, expressed in terms of index vlue of crossing nd n-dwrithe vlue of virtul knot K, where t nd l re vriles. Bsing on the fct tht n-dwrithe is flt virtul knot invrint we prove tht L n K nd F n K re virtul knot invrints contining Kuffmn ffine index polynomil s prticulr cse. Using L n K we give sufficient conditions when virtul knot does not dmit cosmetic crossing chnge. 1. Introduction Virtul knots were introduced y L. Kuffmn [8] s generliztion of clssicl knots nd presented y virtul knot digrms hving clssicl crossings s well s virtul crossings. Equivlence etween two virtul knot digrms cn e determined through clssicl Reidemeister moves nd virtul Reidemeister moves shown in Fig. 1) nd Fig. 1), respectively. Vrious invrints re known to distinguish two virtul knots. We re minly interested in invrints of polynomil type. In the recent yers, mny polynomil invrints of virtul knots nd links hve een introduced. Among them re ffine index polynomil y L Kuffmn [10], writhe polynomil y Z. Cheng nd H. Co [2], wriggle polynomil y L. Folwczny nd L. Kuffmn [5], rrow polynomil y H. Dye nd L. Kuffmn [4], extended rcket polynomil y L. Kuffmn [9], index polynomil y Y.-H. Im, K. Lee nd S.-Y. Lee [6] nd zero polynomil y M.-J. Jeong [7]. In this pper, our im is to introduce new polynomil invrints for virtul knots. We define sequence of polynomil invrints, {L n K t, l)} n=1, which we cll L-polynomils, nd sequence of polynomil invrints, {FK n t, l)} n=1, which we cll F -polynomils. The motivtion for L-polynomils comes from Kuffmn ffine index polynomil P K t) [10]. Recll tht for n oriented 2010 Mthemtics Suject Clssifiction. Primry 57M27; Secondry 57M25. Key words nd phrses. 2 2 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN ) Clssicl Reidemeister moves. ) Virtul Reidemeister moves. Figure 1. Reidemeister moves. virtul knot K this polynomil is defined vi its digrm D y P K t) = c sgnc)t W Dc) 1), where sgnc) denotes the sign of the crossing c in the oriented digrm D, nd W D c) is the weight, ssocited to the crossing c. Let K e n oriented virtul knot nd D e its digrm. For positive integer n, we consider n-th L-polynomil of K y ssigning two weights for ech clssicl crossing c D. One is the index vlue Indc), which ws defined in [2] nd coincide with W D c). Second is the n-dwrithe numer J n D), defined s difference etween n-writhe nd n)-writhe, with n- writhe defined in [12]. For ech clssicl crossing c of digrm D we smooth it loclly to otin virtul knot digrm D c with one less clssicl crossing. The smoothing rule is shown elow in Fig. 6. After smoothing, we clculte n-dwrithe vlue J n D c ) of D c nd ssign it to the crossing c of D. Then we define n n-th L-polynomil of K s L n Kt, l) = sgnc)t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD) ), c CD) where CD) denote the set of ll clssicl crossings of D. Remrk tht L- polynomils generlize the ffine index polynomil since P K t) = L n K t, 1).
3 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS 3 We oserve tht L-polynomils re sometime fil to distinguish two virtul knots, due to the solute vlues in powers of vrile l, see definition of L n K t, l). To resolve this prolem we modify L-polynomils nd introduce F -polynomils. An n-th F -polynomil of oriented virtul knot K is defined vi its digrm D s FKt, n l) = sgnc)t Indc) l JnDc) c CD) c T nd) sgnc)l JnDc) c/ T nd) sgnc)l JnD), where T n D) is set of crossings of D with the following property: T n D) = {c D J n D c ) = ± J n D)}. These F -polynomils re more generl thn L-polynomils nd distinguish mny virtul knots, which cn not e distinguished y L-polynomils. The pper is orgnized s follows. In Section 2 we recll definitions of ffine index nd ffine index polynomil. Then we define n-dwrithe J n D); prove tht it is flt virtul knot invrint see Lemm 2.4); nd descrie how it chnge if we replce D y its inverse D or its mirror imge D see Lemm 2.5). In Section 3 for ny positive integer n we define n-th L-polynomil of oriented virtul knot digrm nd give n exmple of its computtion for reder convenience. After tht we prove tht ny n-th L-polynomil is virtul knot invrint see Theorem 3.3). We oserve tht L-polynomils coincide with the ffine index polynomil for clssicl knots see Proposition 3.4). At the end of the section we give n exmple see Exmple 3.6) of oriented virtul knots for which the ffine index polynomils nd the writhe polynomils re trivil, ut their 1-st L-polynomils re non-trivil. In Section 4, we discuss the ehvior of L-polynomils under reflection nd inversion see Theorem 4.1). In Section 5 we del with the cosmetic crossing chnge conjecture for virtul knots. We prove tht crossing c is not cosmetic crossing if Indc) 0 or J n D c ) ± J n D) for some n see Theorem 5.3). In Section 6 for ny positive integer n we define n-th F -polynomil of oriented virtul knot digrm. We prove tht for ny n-th F -polynomil is virtul knot invrint see Theorem 6.4). The Exmple 6.6 gives pir of oriented virtul knots which re distinguished y F -polynomils, wheres the writhe polynomil nd L-polynomils fils to mke distinction etween these. In Section 7 we demonstrte in Exmples 7.1 nd 7.2 tht F -polynomils re le to distinguish positive reflection mutnts while the ffine index polynomil fils to do it. 2. Index vlue nd dwrithe Let D e n oriented virtul knot digrm. By n rc we men n edge etween two consecutive clssicl crossings long the orienttion. The sign of clssicl crossing c CD), denoted y sgnc), is defined s in Fig. 2.
4 4 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN sgnc) = +1 sgnc) = 1 Figure 2. Crossing signs. Now ssign n integer vlue to ech rc in D in such wy tht the leling round ech crossing point of D follows the rule s shown in Fig. 3. L. Kuffmn proved in [10, Proposition 4.1] tht such integer leling, clled Cheng coloring, lwys exists for n oriented virtul knot digrm. Indeed, for n rc α of D one cn tke lel λα) = c Oα) sgnc), where Oα) denotes the set of crossings first met s overcrossings on trveling long orienttion, strting t the rc α Figure 3. Leling round crossing. After leling ssign weight W D c) to ech clssicl crossing c is defined in [10] s W D c) = sgnc) 1). Then the ffine index polynomil of virtul knot digrm D is defined s 1) P D t) = sgnc)t WDc) 1) c CD) where the summtion runs over the set CD) of clssicl crossings of D. In [5], L. Folwczny nd L. Kuffmn defined n invrint of virtul knots, clled wriggle polynomil, nd proved tht the wriggle polynomil is n lternte definition of the ffine index polynomil. In [2], Z. Cheng nd H. Go ssigned n integer vlue, clled index vlue, to ech clssicl crossing c of virtul knot digrm nd denoted it y Indc). It ws proved [2, Theorem 3.6] tht 2) Indc) = W D c) = sgnc) 1) with nd e lels s presented in Fig. 3. Therefore, we cn compute the index vlue through leling procedure s given in Fig. 3 nd replce W D c) y Indc) in eqution 1). Hence the ffine index polynomil cn e rewritten s P D t) = sgnc)t Indc) 1). c CD)
5 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS 5 In [12], S. Stoh nd K. Tniguchi introduced the n-th writhe. For ech n Z \ {0} the n-th writhe J n D) of n oriented virtul link digrm D is defined s the numer of positive sign crossings minus numer of negtive sign crossings of D with index vlue n. Remrk, tht J n D) is indeed coefficient of t n in the ffine index polynomil. This n-th writhe is virtul knot invrint, for more detils we refer to [12]. Using n-th writhe, we define new invrint s follows. Definition 2.1. Let n N nd D e n oriented virtul knot digrm. Then the n-th dwrithe of D, denoted y J n D), is defined s J n D) = J n D) J n D). Remrk 2.2. The n-th dwrithe J n D) is virtul knot invrint, since n-th writhe J n D) is n oriented virtul knot invrint y [12]. Oviously, J n D) = 0 for ny clssicl knot digrm. Remrk 2.3. Let D e virtul knot digrm. Consider set of ll ffine index vlues of crossing points: SD) = { Indc) : c CD)} N. Then J n D) = 0 for ny n N \ SD). A flt virtul knot digrm is virtul knot digrm otined y forgetting the over/under-informtion of every rel crossing. It mens tht flt virtul knot is n equivlence clss of flt virtul knot digrms y flt Reidemeister moves which re Reidemeister moves see Figs. 1) nd 1)) without the over/under informtion. We will sy tht virtul knot invrint is flt virtul knot invrint, if it is independent of crossing chnge opertion. Lemm 2.4. For ny n N, the n-th dwrithe J n D) is flt virtul knot invrint. Proof. As we oserved ove, for ny n N dwrithe J n D) is virtul knot invrint. To prove tht it is flt virtul knot invrint, we need to show tht J n D) is n invrint under the crossing chnge opertion. Let D e the digrm otined from D y pplying crossing chnge opertion t crossing c nd let c e the corresponding crossing in D. Then Indc ) = Indc) nd sgnc ) = sgnc). If n ± Indc), then J n D ) = J n D) nd J n D ) = J n D). If n = Indc) then J n D ) = J n D) sgnc) nd J n D ) = J n D) + sgnc ) = J n D) sgnc), hence J n D ) = J n D). Anlogously, if n = Indc) then J n D ) = J n D) sgnc) nd J n D ) = J n D) + sgnc ) = J n D) sgnc), hence J n D ) = J n D) Thus, n-th dwrithe is invrint under crossing chnge opertions nd it is flt virtul knot invrint. Let D e the reverse of D, otined from D y reversing the orienttion nd let D e the mirror imge of D, otined y switching ll the clssicl crossings in D.
6 6 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN Lemm 2.5. If D is n oriented virtul knot digrm, then J n D ) = J n D) nd J n D ) = J n D). Proof. Let c e crossing in D, nd c nd c e the corresponding crossings in D nd D, respectively. The cse when sgnc) = 1 is presented in Fig w + 1) w 1) c c w w c Figure 4. Leling round crossings. It is cler from Fig. 4, tht sgnc ) = sgnc) nd sgnc ) = sgnc). It is esy to see from the definition see Fig. 3), tht Cheng coloring of D coincides with Cheng coloring of D. Hence Indc ) = Indc). To otin Cheng coloring of D we refer to [10, Proposition 4.2]: if λα) is the ove defined leling function tht count overcrossings with signs, then for the rc α D, corresponding to rc α D, the following property holds: λα) + λα ) = w, where w = wrd) is the writhe numer of D. Hence Indc ) = Indc). Consider the set SD) introduced for digrm D in Remrk 2.3. Assume tht n / SD). Then y Remrk 2.3 we hve J n D) = 0, nd hence J n D ) = J n D) = 0 nd J n D ) = J n D) = 0. Now ssume tht n SD). Then we hve Therefore, J ±n D ) = J n D) nd J ±n D ) = J n D). J n D ) = J n D ) J n D ) = J n D) J n D)) = J n D), nd, nlogously, J n D ) = J n D ) J n D ) = J n D) J n D) = J n D). 3. L-polynomils of virtul knot digrms Let c e clssicl crossing of n oriented virtul knot digrm D. There re two possiility to smooth in c. One is to smooth long the orienttion of rcs shown in Fig. 5. Another is smoothing ginst the orienttion of rcs shown in Fig. 6. Let us denote y D c the oriented digrm otined from D y smoothing t c ginst the orienttion of rcs. The orienttion of D c is induced y the orienttion of smoothing. Since D is virtul knot digrm, D c is lso virtul knot digrm.
7 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS 7 or Figure 5. Smoothing long orienttion. nd Figure 6. Smoothing ginst orienttion. Definition 3.1. Let D e n oriented virtul knot digrm nd n e ny positive integer. Then n-th L-polynomil of D t n is define s L n Dt, l) = sgnc)t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD) ). c CD) Since numer of crossings in virtul knot digrm is finite, it is esy to see tht for given virtul knot digrm D there exists positive integer N, such tht J n D) = 0 nd J n D c ) = 0 for ll n > N nd c CD). Therefore, L n D t, l) = P Dt) for ll n > N. More precisely, let us denote y CD) the crdinlity of the set of clssicl crossings of D. Then y [10, Proposition 4.1] for ny rc of D the solute vlue of its lel is t most CD). Remrk tht CD c ) = CD) 1 for ny c CD). Hence, for ny crossing c in D or D c the inequlity Indc ) 2 CD) + 1 holds. Thus for ny n > 2 CD) + 1, we hve J n D c ) = J n D) = 0 nd L n D t, l) = P Dt). For digrm D we consider set N D N defined y N D = S Dc S D, c CD) where SD) nd SD c ) re s in Remrk 2.3. Then L n D t, l) = P Dt) for ny n / N D. Before discussing properties of L-polynomil we give n exmple of its clcultion. Exmple 3.2. Let us consider n oriented virtul knot digrm D presented in Fig. 7. The digrm D hs four clssicl crossings denoted y α, β, γ, nd δ, see the left-hnd picture. In the right-hnd picture we presented orienttion of rcs for ech clssicl crossing nd the corresponding leling, stisfying the rule given in Fig. 2. Crossing signs cn e esy found from rc orienttions round crossing points given in Fig. 7: sgnα) = sgnβ) = sgnγ) = 1 nd sgnδ) = 1.
8 8 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN α β γ δ Figure 7. Oriented virtul digrm D nd its leling. Index vlues cn e clculted directly from crossing signs nd leling of rcs y Eq. 2): Indα) = 2, Indβ) = 2, Indγ) = 1, Indδ) = 1. Therefore, only the following writhe numers cn e non-trivil: J 1 D), J 2 D), nd J 2 D). It is esy to see, tht J 1 D) = sgnγ) + sgnδ) = 0, J 2 D) = sgnα) = 1, nd J 2 D) = sgnβ) = 1. Then J 1 D) = J 1 D) J 1 D) = 0 nd J 2 D) = J 2 D) J 2 D) = 0. For ny n 3 we hve J n D) = 0. Let us consider ginst orienttion smoothings t clssicl crossing points α, β, γ, nd δ of D. The resulting oriented virtul knot digrms D α, D β, D γ, nd D δ re presented in Fig 8, where clssicl crossing points hve the sme nottions s in D nd lelings of rcs Cheng colorings) re given. Orienttions of these digrms re induced y orienttions of smoothings. The result of clcultions for oriented virtul knot digrms D α, D β, D γ, nd D δ, presented in Fig. 8, is given in Tle 1. Bsing on these clcultions we otin L-polynomils for digrm D. For n = 1 nd n = 2 we get L 1 Dt, l) = 2 t 2 l 2 t 2 l 2, L 2 Dt, l) = 2 t 2 l t 2 l. For ll n 3 L-polynomils coincide with the ffine polynomil: This completes the Exmple 3.2. L n Dt, l) = P D t) = 2 t 2 t 2. The following result shows tht L-polynomils re invrints of virtul knots. Theorem 3.3. Let D e digrm of n oriented virtul knot K. Then for ny n N, the polynomil L n D t, l) is n invrint for K. Proof. Let n e ny positive integer. From the definition of L-polynomil it is cler tht L n D t, l) is n invrint under virtul Reidemeister moves. Thus,

Let D e digrm otined from D y pplying one of these moves. We ssume tht in cse of RI nd RII, the numer of clssicl crossings in D re more thn the numer of clssicl crossings in D. We hve the following cses. RI move: Let D e digrm otined from D y move RI nd c e the new crossing in D. Fig. 9 presents ll possile cses i), ii), iii) nd iv), depending of orienttion nd crossing t c. Recll tht Indc ) = sgnc ) 1), where lels nd re presented in Fig. 3. In the cse i) it is shown in Fig. 9 tht = 1, hence Indc ) = 0. Similr considertions give tht Indc ) = 0 for ll cses i), ii), iii) nd iv). Also,
10 10 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN it is cler from Fig. 9 tht in cses ii) nd iii) D c is equivlent to D, nd in cses i) nd iv) D c is equivlent to D with the inverse orienttion. Hence, y Lemm 2.5 we get J n D c ) = J n D). By Remrk 2.2, J n D ) = J n D). i) RI c 1 ii) RI c iii) RI c iv) RI c Figure 9. RI-move nd smoothing ginst orienttion. Therefore, L n D t, l) = c CD ) = c CD) sgnc) t ) Indc) l JnD c) l JnD ) sgnc) t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD) ) + sgnc ) t ) Indc ) l JnD c ) l JnD ) = L n Dt, l) + sgnc ) t 0 l JnD) l JnD) ) = L n Dt, l). RII move: Let D e digrm otined from D y move RII nd let nd e new crossings in D. Then sgn) = sgn) nd Ind) = Ind). Let D nd D e digrms, otined from D y orienttion reversing smoothings t nd, respectively. We will consider two cses of moves RII. In Cse 1), presented in Fig. 10, two rcs of D hve the sme orienttion; nd in Cse 2), presented in Fig. 11, two rcs of D hve different orienttions. D RII D D D RI RI D D Figure 10. 11 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS 11 D RII D D = = Figure 11. RII-move nd smoothing ginst orienttion. Cse 2). In Cse 1) digrm D is RI equivlent to digrm D, nd digrm D is RI-equivlent to digrm D. Since n-dwrithe is RI-invrint nd digrms D nd D coincide, we get J nd ) = J n D ). In Cse 2) we get oriented digrms D nd D tht hve difference only in one crossing point. Since y Lemm 2.5, n-th writhe is flt virtul knot invrint, we lso get J n D ) = J n D ). Therefore, in oth cses we hve L n D t, l) = Ln Dt, l) + sgn) t ) Ind) l JnD ) l JnD ) + sgn) t ) Ind) l JnD ) l JnD ) = L n Dt, l) + sgn) t ) Ind) l JnD ) l JnD ) ) sgn) t Ind) l JnD ) l JnD ) = L n Dt, l). D For remining cses of RII-moves with nother over/under crossings the sme rguments give the invrince of L n D t, l). RIII move: Let D e digrm otined form D y RIII-move. Let, nd c e crossings in D, nd, nd c e corresponding crossings of D, s shown in Fig. 12. c c Figure 12. RIII move. Becuse, of freedom to choose orienttion for ech of three rcs, there re eight cse for RIII-moves. We consider one of them in detils. Assume tht orienttions of rcs of D re s in Fig. 13 nd of rcs of D re s in Fig. 14.

Moreover, direct clcultions of Cheng coloring lels, y the rule presented in Fig. 3, imply tht Ind ) = Ind), Ind ) = Ind), nd Indc ) = Indc). Therefore, J n D ) = J n D). Now we consider orienttions reversing smoothings of D t crossings,, c nd of D t crossings,, c. By compring Fig. 13 nd Fig. 14 we see tht D nd D re equivlent under two crossing chnge opertions, hence y Lemm 2.5 we hve J n D ) = J n D ). Digrm D is equivlent to D under two RII-moves, nd nlogously, digrm D c is equivlent to D c under two RII moves. Therefore, y Remrk 2.2 we hve J n D ) = J n D ) nd J n D c ) = J n D c ). By the ove discussion, ) sgn ) t Ind ) l JnD ) l JnD ) + sgn ) t ) Ind ) l JnD ) l JnD ) t ) Indc ) l JnD c ) l JnD ) = sgn) + sgnc ) t Ind) l JnD) l JnD) ) + sgn) t Ind) l JnD) l JnD) ) + sgnc) t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD) ). Therefore, L n D t, l) = L n D t, l). For other types of RIII-moves the result follows y nlogous considertions. SV move: Let D e digrm, otined from D y SV-move pplied t clssicl crossing c, nd c e the correspond crossing of D. We will discuss two cses depending of rc orienttions. In Cse 1), presented in Fig. 15, we see tht sgnc ) = sgnc) nd Indc ) = Indc). Hence J n D ) = J n D). As we see from Fig. 15, digrms D c nd D c re equivlent under two VRII-moves. Then, y Remrk 2.2 we hve J n D c ) = J n D c ).

Anlogously, in Cse 2), presented in Fig. 16, we see tht sgnc ) = sgnc) nd Indc ) = Indc). Hence J n D ) = J n D). As we see from Fig. 16, digrms D c nd D c re equivlent, so J n D c ) = J n D c ). Thus, in Cse 1) s well s in Cse 2) we get sgnc ) t Indc ) l JnD c ) l JnD ) ) = sgnc) t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD) ). Therefore, L n D t, l) = L n D t, l). Applying nlogous rguments for other types of SV-moves, we conclude tht L n D t, l) is invrint under SV-moves. All considered cses of moves RI, RII, RIII, nd SV give tht L n D t, l) is virtul knot invrint. Proposition 3.4. The L-polynomils nd the ffine index polynomil coincide on clssicl knots. Proof. Let D e digrm of clssicl knot K nd n N. Since dwrithe is flt virtul knot invrint, J n D) nd J n D c ) equl to zero for ny c CD). Thus L n D t, l) = P Dt). Remrk 3.5. For l = 1 we get L n K t, 1) = P Kt). Thus the ffine index polynomil ecomes specil cse of the L-polynomil. Exmple 3.6. Consider oriented virtul knot K nd its mirror imge K presented y the digrms in Fig. 17. The ffine index polynomil nd the writhe polynomil re trivil for these knots, while L-polynomils re non trivil: nd L 1 Kt, l) = t 1 l 2 + tl 2 t 1 t, L 2 Kt, l) = t 1 l + tl t 1 t, L 1 K t, l) = t 1 l 2 tl 2 + t 1 + t, L 2 K t, l) = t 1 l tl + t 1 + t. Therefore, knots K nd K re oth non-trivil nd non-equivlent to ech other.

15 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS Cosmetic crossing chnge conjecture A crossing in knot digrm is sid to e nugtory if it cn e removed y twisting prt of the knot, see Fig. 19. An exmple of nugtory crossing is one tht cn e undone with n RI-move. Oviously, under pplying crossing chnge opertion t nugtory crossing we will get digrm equivlent to the originl digrm. Fig. 19 shows generl form for nugtory crossing. K K Figure 19. Nugtory crossing. Definition 5.1. [5] A crossing chnge in knot digrm D is sid to e cosmetic if the new digrm, sy D, is isotopic clssiclly or virtully) to D. A crossing chnge on nugtory crossing is clled trivil cosmetic crossing chnge. The following question is still open. Question 5.2. [11, Prolem 1.58] Do non-trivil cosmetic crossing chnge exit? This question, often referred to s the cosmetic crossing chnge conjecture or the nugtory crossing conjecture, hs een nswered in the negtive for mny clsses of clssicl knots, see [1] nd references therein. For virtul knots this question lso hs een nswered in the negtive for wide clss of knot. In [5, p. 15], L. Folwczny nd L. Kuffmn proved tht crossing c in D with Indc) 0 is not cosmetic. The following sttement gives one more condition on crossing, with which one cn sy tht the crossing is not cosmetic. Theorem 5.3. Let D e virtul knot digrm nd c e crossing in D. If Indc) 0 or there exists n N D such tht J n D c ) ± J n D), then c is not cosmetic crossing. Proof. Let c e clssicl crossing of D such tht either J n D c ) ± J n D) or Indc) 0. Denote y D the virtul knot digrm otined from D y crossing chnge t c. Let c is the corresponding crossing of D. Then t ) Indc ) l JnD c ) l JnD ) L n D t, l) sgnc ) = L n Dt, l) sgnc) t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD) ). It ws shown in the proof of Lemm 2.4 tht sgnc ) = sgnc), Indc ) = Indc), nd J n D ) = J n D). Since D c is inverse of D c, see Fig. 6, y
16 16 KIRANDEEP KAUR, MADETI PRABHAKAR, AND ANDREI VESNIN Lemm 2.4 we hve J n D c ) = J n D c ). Hence L n D t, l) Ln Dt, l) = sgnc) 2l JnD) t Indc) + t Indc)) l JnDc) ). If Indc) 0, then L n D t, l) L n D t, l). If Indc) = 0 nd J nd c ) = J n D), then L n D t, l) L n D t, l) lso. Since L-polynomils re virtul knot invrints, D is not equivlent to D, whence crossing c is non-cosmetic. Corollry 5.4. If for ech clssicl crossing c of n oriented virtul knot digrm D we hve Indc) 0 or J n D c ) ± J n D) for some n, then D does not dmit cosmetic crossing chnge. 6. F-polynomils We oserve tht, due to solute vlues of dwrithe, in some cses L- polynomils fil to distinguish given two virtul knots, see n exmple presented in Fig. 20. To resolve this prolem, we modify L-polynomils nd define new polynomils which will e referred s F -polynomils. Definition 6.1. Let D e n oriented virtul knot digrm nd n e positive integer. Then n-th F -polynomil of D is defined s FDt, n l) = sgnc)t Indc) l JnDc) c CD) c T nd) sgnc)l JnDc) where T n D) = {c CD) J n D c ) = ± J n D)}. c/ T nd) sgnc)l JnD), Remrk 6.2. By replcing J n D) y J n D) nd J n D c ) y J n D c ) in the definition of F -polynomil one will get L-polynomil. Hence y replcing ech l q, q Z, in F -polynomil y l q one will get L-polynomil. Exmple 6.3. Consider the virtul knot digrm D presented in Fig. 7. It hs four clssicl crossings {α, β, γ.δ}.to clculte FD n t, l) we should find T n D). Digrms D α, D β, D γ nd D δ re presented in Fig. 8. It ws shown in Exmple 3.2 tht J 1 D) = 0 nd J 2 D) = 0. Compring with Tle 1 we get T 1 D) = {γ, δ} nd T 2 D) = {γ, δ}. Using vlues presented in Tle 1, we otin F 1 Dt, l) = t 2 l 2 t 2 l nd FDt, 2 l) = t 2 l 1 t 2 l + 2. For n 3, we hve T n D) = {α, β, γ, δ} nd F n Dt, l) = P D t) = 2 t 2 t 2. Theorem 6.4. For ny n N, the polynomil F n K t, l) is virtul knot invrint.
17 TWO-VARIABLE POLYNOMIAL INVARIANTS OF VIRTUAL KNOTS 17 Proof. The proof is nlogous to the proof of Theorem 3.3 nd consists of oserving the ehvior of FK n t, l) under clssicl Reidemeister moves RI, RII, RIII, nd semi virtul move SV. Considering the set T n D) = {c CD) J n D c ) = ± J n D)}, we rewrite FK n t, l) in the form FDt, n l) = sgnc) [t Indc) l JnDc) l JnDc)] + c T nd) c CD)\T nd) [ sgnc) t Indc) l JnDc) l JnD)]. RI-move: Let D e digrm otined from D y move RI nd c e the new crossing of D. It cn e seen from the proof of Theorem 3.3 tht Indc ) = 0 nd J n D c ) = J n D ). Hence, c T n D ) nd [ ] FD n t, l) = F Dt, n l) + sgnc ) t Indc ) l JnD c ) l JnD c ) = FDt, n l). RII-move: Let D e digrm otined from D y move RII nd let nd e new crossings in D. It cn e seen from the proof of Theorem 3.3 tht sgn) = sgn) nd J n D ) = J n D ). Moreover, T nd ) if nd only if T n D ). Therefore, FD n t, l) = F n D t, l). RIII-move: In nottions of the proof of Theorem 3.3 we hve sgn ) = sgn), sgn ) = sgn), nd sgnc ) = sgnc). Moreover, J n D ) = J n D ), J n D ) = J n D ) nd J n D c ) = J n D c ). Hence FD n t, l) = FD n t, l). SV-move: In nottions of the proof of Theorem 3.3 we hve c = c. Moreover, J n D c ) = J n D c ) nd J n D ) = J n D). Therefore, FD n t, l) = F n D t, l). Proposition 6.5. If two oriented virtul knots re distinguished y L- polynomils, then they re distinguished y F -polynomils too. The converse property doesn t hold. Proof. Let K 1 nd K 2 e two oriented virtul knot distinguished y L- polynomil. Hence there exist n N, p Z, nd q N such tht coefficients of t p l q in L n K 1 t, l) nd L n K 2 t, l) re different. Let A 1 nd A 2 e the coefficient of t p l q nd t p l q in FK n 1 t, l), respectively. Let B 1 nd B 2 e the coefficient of t p l q nd t p l q in FK n 2 t, l), respectively. By Remrk 6.2, the coefficient of t p l q in L n K 1 t, l) is equl A 1 + A 2, nd the coefficient of t p l q in L n K 2 t, l) is equl B 1 + B 2. But these coefficients should e different, i. e. A 1 +A 2 B 1 +B 2. Therefore, either A 1 B 1 or A 2 B 2. Hence FK n 1 t, l) FK n 2 t, l). Exmple 6.6 demonstrte tht the converse property doesn t hold. Exmple 6.6. Consider two oriented virtul knots K nd K depicted in Fig. 20. In Tle 2 we present the writhe polynomil, L-polynomils, nd F -polynomils, clculted for K nd K. One cn see tht K nd K cn not e distinguished y the writhe polynomil nd the L-polynomils. But F -polynomils distinguish them.

Conwy muttion of given knot K is chieved y cutting out tngle cutting the knot K t four points) nd gluing it ck fter mking horizontl flip, verticl flip, or π rottion. The muttion is positive if the orienttion of the rcs of the tngle doesn t chnge under muttion. A positive reflection is positive muttion s shown in Fig. 21. Figure 21. Positive reflection muttion. It ws shown in [5] tht the ffine index polynomil fils to identify muttion y positive reflection. In Exmples 7.1 nd 7.2 we construct fmily of virtul knots nd their positive reflection mutnts which re distinguished y F -polynomils.
