CLASSIFICATION OF COMPLEX CYCLIC LEIBNIZ ALGEBRAS DANIEL SCOFIELD AND S MCKAY SULLIVAN rxiv: v1 [mthra] 1 Nov 2014 Abstrct Since Leibniz lgebrs were introduced by Lody s generliztion of Lie lgebrs, there hs been lot of interest in which results of the ltter extend to the former Cyclic lgebrs, those generted by one element, re useful tool for studying these concepts In fct, they hve no Lie lgebr counterprt Their simple structure lends itself to elegnt counterexmples to the extension of severl importnt results from Lie lgebrs to Leibniz lgebrs In this pper, we give clssifiction of cyclic Leibniz lgebrs 1 Introduction Cyclic Leibniz lgebrs were introduced in [6] nd pper in the clssifiction of elementry [3] nd miniml non-elementry Leibniz lgebrs [7] They re lso used s exmples in the expository rticle [4] In this work we clssify these lgebrs Good references re [1], [2], [4], nd [5] We recll tht Leibniz lgebr is n lgebr in which left multipliction by every element is derivtion, ie, multipliction is given by x(yz) = (xy)z+y(xz) for ll x,y,z A Note tht with the further constrint xy = yx this becomes Lie lgebr One mjor difference between Leibniz nd Lie lgebrs is tht the product of n element with itself in Leibniz lgebr my not be 0 Thus it mkes sense to spek of Leibniz lgebrs generted by single element Such lgebrs re clled cyclic Leibniz lgebrs Some interesting results bout these lgebrs hve lredy been obtined, such s the fcts tht cyclic Leibniz lgebrs hve unique Crtn sublgebr, tht they hve only finitely mny mximl sublgebrs, nd tht ll of these sublgebrs cn be explicitly computed [7] 2 Bsic Structure Let A be n n-dimensionl vector spce over C contining nonzero element Choose liner opertor T : A A such tht is cyclic vector for T, ie, such tht B = {,T(),,T n 1 ()} is bsis for A Then T n () = α 1 +α 2 T()+ +α n T n 1 () for some α 1,,α n C We define product C A A s follows (c)v = ct(v) for ll v A, ie, such tht T is left multipliction by Throughout the rest of the pper we will dobt the nottion L when referringto this T Tovoidlwyswritingthe bsiselementsofain terms ofl, we let k = L k 1 () We im to extend this product linerly to ll of A A in such wy tht left multipliction is derivtion Proposition 21 In the setting defined bove, left multipliction is derivtion if nd only if (i) k j = 0 for ll 2 k n nd 1 j n, nd (ii) α 1 = 0 Proof First we ssume tht left multipliction is derivtion Then j+1 = ( j ) = 2 j + j+1 for ll 1 j n, which implies tht 2 j = 0 for ll 1 j n Now ssume k 1 j = 0 for some 3 k n nd for ll 1 j n Then ( k 1 j ) = k j + k 1 j+1 The work of the uthors ws supported by NSF grnt DMS

By the induction hypothesis k 1 j = k 1 j+1 = 0 Thus k j = 0 for ll j 1 This estblishes (i) To show (ii) we note tht if n = 1, then A is belin So α 1 = 0 If n > 1, then by (i) 0 = n = (α 1 +α α n n ) = α 1 2 Thus α 1 = 0 For the other impliction, ssume tht (i) nd (ii) hold Since A = spn{, 2,, n } nd L k = 0 for k > 1, it is enough to check tht L is derivtion, ie tht ( k j ) = k+1 j + k j+1 for ll 1 j,k n By (i) both sides of this eqution re 0 when k > 1 nd j+2 when k = 1 Of course, ll of wht we hve sid so fr is well-known We could hve just strted by sying tht cyclic Leibniz lgebr is n lgebr generted by single element such tht left multipliction by is derivtion We chose to include the preceding detils becuse the underlying vector spce structure is the hert of the following clssifiction 3 Clssifiction of Cyclic Leibniz Algebrs over C Let A be n n-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebr over C generted by single element If n = 0, then A is the nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebr of dimension n of which there is only one up to isomorphism Throughout the rest of this pper, we consider only non-nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebrs, ie, cyclic Leibniz lgebrs where the genertor stisfies (1) n = α k k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n for some 2 k n nd α k 0 From the discussion in the previous section, it is esy to see tht ny choice of α 2,,α n defines cyclic Leibniz lgebr However, s we will show, differing choices of these coefficients do not lwys yield nonisomorphic lgebrs A simple exmple tht illustrtes this point is when A is 2-dimensionl nd 2 = α 2 with α 0,1 Let x = 1 α Then clerly x is cyclic genertor for A nd (2) xx 2 = 1 α 32 = 1 α 22 = x 2 αx 2 Thus A itself hs genertors whose multiplictions re different We consider the question of when two cyclic Leibniz lgebrs of the sme dimension re isomorphic Lemm 31 Let A nd B be two cyclic Leibniz lgebrs of dimension n Assume A hs cyclic genertor which stisfies n = α k k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n Then A is isomorphic to B if nd only if B hs cyclic genertor b which stisfies (3) bb n = α k b k +α k+1 b k+1 + +α n b n Proof Suppose tht A is isomorphic to B There is n isomorphism of lgebrs f : A B tht sends to some element f() = b B, so tht the following holds: bb n = f()f() n = f()f( n ) = f( n ) = f(α k k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n ) = α k f() k +α k+1 f() k+1 + +α n f() n = α k b k +α k+1 b k+1 + +α n b n To show tht b genertes B, let b B so tht f 1 (b ) = c 1 + +c n n A for some constnts c i Observe tht f 1 (c 1 b+ +c n b n ) = c 1 f 1 (b)+ +c n f 1 (b) n = c 1 + +c n n = f 1 (b ) Since f 1 is n isomorphism, b = c 1 b+ +c n b n For the other direction, suppose B hs genertor b with the bove multipliction Let f : A B be the vector spce isomorphism tht sends i b i for 1 i n To show tht this is homomorphism 2

of Leibniz lgebrs, we find tht f( i ) = f( i+1 ) = b i+1 = bb i = f()f( i ) for 1 i < n nd f( n ) = f(α k k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n ) = α k f( k )+α k+1 f( k+1 )+ +α n f( n ) = α k b k +α k+1 b k+1 + +α n b n = bb n = f()f( n ) From this we see tht f respects ll non-zero products in A Thus f is n isomorphism of lgebrs from A to B Given cyclic Leibniz lgebr A of dimension n with genertor stisfying (1), we im to find the isomorphism clss of A By Lemm 31, it is enough to find ll possible coefficients γ 2,,γ n C such tht there exists genertor x A stisfying xx n = γ 2 x 2 +γ 3 x 3 + +γ n x n In the bsis B = {, 2,, n }, the liner opertor L hs mtrix [L ] B =, α k α n which is the compnion mtrix for the chrcteristic polynomil f(t) = t n α n t n 1 α n 1 t n 2 α k t k 1 By the Cyley-Hmilton theorem f(l ) = 0 In other words (4) (L n α nl n 1 α n 1 L n 2 α k L k 1 )(x) = 0 for ll x A Now let us ssume x is cyclic genertor nd write x in terms of the bsis B: By rerrnging (4) we obtin L n (x) = α k L k 1 x = c 1 +c c n n (x)+α k+1 L k (x)+ +α n L n 1 (x) Note tht c 1 0 else x is not cyclic genertor for A We multiply by c n 1 which gives c n 1 Ln (x) = cn 1 α kl k 1 (x)+c n 1 α k+1l k (x)+ +cn 1 α nl n 1 (x) By Proposition 21 we know tht left multipliction by j is zero for ll j > 1 Thus L x = c 1 L Then which we my lso write s L n x (x) = cn k+1 1 α k Lx k 1 (x)+c1 n k α k+1 L k x (x)+ +c 1α n Lx n 1 (x), (5) xx n = c n k+1 1 α k x k +c n k 1 α k+1 x k+1 + +c 1 α n x n Thus every genertor for A stisfies (5) Since x = c 1 is genertor for ll c 1 0, there is t lest one cyclic genertor for A stisfying (5) for every c 1 0 We hve proven the following lemm: Lemm 32 Let A be n n-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebr with genertor stisfying (1) Then (i) Every genertor x = c 1 + +c n n for A stisfies (6) xx n = c n k+1 1 α k x k +c n k 1 α k+1 x k+1 + +c 1 α n x n (ii) A hs t lest one genertor stisfying (6) for ech c 1 0 We cll n n-dimensionl non-nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebr A type k lgebr if A hs genertor x with multipliction (7) xx n = x k +γ k+1 x k+1 + +γ n x n for some ordered (n k)-tuple (γ k+1,,γ n ) C n k 3

Lemm 33 Every n-dimensionl non-nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebr is of type k for one nd only one k {2,,n} Proof Let A be non-nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebr hving genertor with multipliction s in (1) Let x = c 1 where c 1 = α 1 k n 1 k Then by Lemm 32 prt (i), x is genertor stisfying (7) with γ k+i = c n k+1 i 1 α k+i Thus A is of type k for t lest one k Tht this k is unique gin follows immeditely from prt (i) of Lemm 32, since c 1 0 nd α k 0 imply tht c n k+1 1 α k 0 By Lemm 33, we know tht ny non-nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebr of type k hs genertor stisfying (7) for some (n k)-tuple (γ k+1,,γ n ) The question remins s to whether A cn lso hve genertor stisfying (7) for some other (n k)-tuple Let d = n k We define the following reltion on C d We sy (γ 1,γ 2,,γ d ) (γ 1,γ 2,,γ d ) if (γ 1,γ 2,,γ d ) = (ω d γ 1,ωd 1 γ 2,,ωγ d ) for some (d+1)-th root of unity ω One my esily check tht is n equivlence reltion on C d Then the equivlence clsses re of the form [(γ 1,γ 2,,γ d )] = {(ω d γ 1,ω d 1 γ 2,,ωγ d ) ω is n (d+1)-th root of unity} Then we hve the following lemm Lemm 34 Fix k {2,,n} nd let (γ k+1,,γ n ) (C n k ) \0 Let A be cyclic Leibniz lgebr of dimension n contining genertor x such tht (8) xx n = x k +γ k+1 x k+1 + +γ n x n Then A lso hs genertor y such tht yy n = y k +γ k+1 yk+1 + +γ n yn if nd only if (γ k+1,,γ n) (γ k+1,,γ n ), where is the equivlence reltion on C n k defined bove Proof Write y = c 1 x+c 2 x 2 + +c n x n Then Lemm 32 sys tht c n k+1 1 = 1 Then c 1 is n (n k+1)-th root of unity nd by Lemm 32 prt (i) we hve (9) yy n = y k +c n k 1 γ k+1 y k+1 + +c 1 γ n y n Thus (γ k+1,,γ n ) (γ k+1,,γ n) For the other impliction, let (γ k+1,,γ n) [(γ k+1,,γ n )] Then (γ k+1,,γ n) = (ω n k γ k+1,,ωγ n ) for some (n k +1) th root of unity ω Then the genertor y = ωx stisfies yy n = y k +ω n k γ k+1 y k+1 + +ωγ n y n = y k +γ k+1y k+1 + +γ ny n We hve shown tht there is one-to-one correspondence between isomorphism clsses of non-nilpotent n-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebrs of type k nd the nonzero elements of C n k / More precisely, we hve the following clssifiction: Theorem 35 (Clssifiction) Let A be n n-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebr over C Then A is isomorphic to Leibniz lgebr spnned by {, 2,, n } with the product n given by one nd only one of the following: (1) n = 0 (nilpotent cse) (2) n = n (3) n = k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n, 2 k n 1, (α k+1,,α n ) C n k / 4

Proof Tht there is only one n-dimensionl nilpotent cyclic Leibniz lgebr up to isomorphism follows from Lemm 31 Now ssume A is non-nilpotent n-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebr Then by Lemm 33, A hs genertor stisfying one nd only one of (2) or (3) Now ssume A hs genertor stisfying n = k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n Then by Lemm 34, A lso hs genertor b stisfying if nd only if (α k+1,,α n ) (α k+1,,α n ) n = k +α k+1 k+1 + +α n n Wethinkitworthnothingthtforechk = 2,,n 1thereisn(n k)-prmeterfmilyofisomorphism clsses of cyclic Leibniz lgebrs of type k, the prmeters being chosen from the uncountble set C n k / Thus for n 3 there re uncountbly mny isomorphism clsses of cyclic Leibniz lgebrs of dimension n over C 4 3 nd 4-dimensionl Clssifiction We use the 3 nd 4-dimensionl cses to illustrte Theorem 35: Corollry 41 (3-dimensionl Clssifiction) Let A be 3-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebr over C Then A is isomorphic to Leibniz lgebr spnned by {, 2, 3 } with the product 3 given by one nd only one of the following: (1) 3 = 0 (nilpotent cse) (2) 3 = 3 (3) 3 = 2 +α 3 3, α 3 C/, where α α if α = ±α Corollry 42 (4-dimensionl Clssifiction) Let A be 4-dimensionl cyclic Leibniz lgebr over C Then A is isomorphic to Leibniz lgebr spnned by {, 2, 3, 4 } with the product 4 given by one nd only one of the following: (1) 4 = 0 (nilpotent cse) (2) 4 = 4 (3) 4 = 3 +α 4 4, α 4 C/, where α α if α = ±α (4) 4 = 2 +α 3 3 +α 4 4, (α 3,α 4 ) C/, where (α,β) (α,β ) if (α,β ) {(α,β),(ω 2 α,ωβ),(ωα,ω 2 β) ω = e 2πi/3 } Acknowledgements The uthors re grdute students t North Crolin Stte University Their work ws funded by n REG grnt from the Ntionl Science Foundtion The uthors would like to thnk Dr Ernest Stitzinger for his guidnce nd support References [1] Sh A Ayupov nd B A Omirov On Leibniz lgebrs Algebr nd Opertor Theory, Proceedings of the Colloquium in Tshkent, Kluwer, Dordrecht, pges 1 13, 1998 [2] DW Brnes Some theorems on Leibniz lgebrs Comm Algebr, 39(7): , 2011 [3] C Btten, L Bosko-Dunbr, A Hedges, JT Hird, K Stgg, nd E Stitzinger A Frttini theory for Leibniz lgebrs Comm Algebr, 41(4): , 2013 [4] I Demir, KC Misr, nd E Stitzinger On some structures of Leibniz lgebrs Contemporry Mthemtics, 623:41 54, 2014 [5] V Gorbtsevich On some bsic properties of Leibniz lgebrs rxiv: v2 [mthra] [6] CB Ry, A Combs, N Gin, A Hedges, JT Hird, nd L Zck Nilpotent Lie nd Leibniz lgebrs Comm Algebr, 42: , 2014 [7] CB Ry, A Hedges, nd E Stitzinger Clssifying severl clsses of Leibniz lgebrs Algebrs nd Representtion Theory, 17: , 2014 Deprtment of Mthemtics, North Crolin Stte University, Rleigh, NC E-mil ddress: dscofie@ncsuedu, smsulli4@ncsuedu 5
