AP Physics 1 Summer Assignment Welcome to AP Physics 1 It is a college level physics course that is fun, interesting and challenging on a level you ve not yet experienced. This summer assignment will review all of the prerequisite knowledge expected of you. There are 57 parts to this assignment. It is quantity not the difficulty of the problems that has the potential to overwhelm, so do it over an extended period of time. By taking the time to review and understand all parts of this assignment, you will help yourself acclimate to the rigor and pacing of AP Physics 1. Use You the can book use resources if you need to to, help, but but really this this should is all be stuff you already know how to do (basic math skills). It is VERY important that this assignment be completed individually. It will be a total waste of your time to copy the assignment from a friend. or The online. summer This assignment packet will be due the first day of class. Good luck Part 1: Scientific Notation and Dimensional Analysis *Don t have to print out Could respond on binder paper, just show all your work Many numbers in physics will be provided in scientific notation. You need to be able read and simplify scientific notation. (This section is to be completed without calculators all work should be done by hand.) Get used to no calculator All multiple choice portions of tests will be completed without a calculator. Express the following the numbers in scientific notation. Keep the same unit as provided. ALL answers in physics need their appropriate unit to be correct. 1. 7,640,000 kg m s km/s Often times multiple numbers in a problem contain scientific notation and will need to be reduced by hand. Before you practice, remember the rules for exponents. When numbers are multiplied together, you the exponents and the bases. When numbers are divided, you the exponents and the bases. When an exponent is raised to another exponent, you the exponents and the base. Using the three rules from above, simplify the following numbers in proper scientific notation: 5. (3x10 6 ) (2x10 4 ) = 7. (4x10 8 ) (5x10-3 ) = 9. (8x10 3 ) / (2x10 5 ) = 6. (1.2x10 4 ) / (6x10-2 ) = 8. (7x10 3 ) 2 = 10. (2x10-3 ) 3 =

Fill in the power and the symbol for the following unit prefixes. Look them up as necessary. These should be memorized for next year. Kilo- has been completed as an example. Prefix Power Symbol Giga- Mega- Kilo k Centi- Milli- Micro- Nano- Pico- Not only is it important to know what the prefixes mean, it is also vital that you can convert between metric units. If there is no prefix in front of a unit, it is the base unit which has 10 0 for its power, or just simply 1. Remember if there is an exponent on the unit, the conversion should be raised to the same exponent as well. Convert the following numbers into the specified unit. Use scientific notation when appropriate g = kg m 2 = cm MHz = Hz mm 3 = m Gb = kb 7. 1 g/cm 3 = kg/m nm = m m/s = km/hr For the remaining scientific notation problems you may use your calculator. It is important that you know how to use your calculator for scientific notation. The easiest method is to use the EE button. An example is included below to show you how to use the EE button. Ex: 7.8x10-6 would be entered as 7.8 EE (3.67x10 3 )(8.91x10-6 ) = 10. (5.32x10-2 )(4.87x10-4 ) = 11. (9.2x10 6 ) / (3.6x10 12 ) = 12. (6.12x10-3 ) 3

Part 2: Geometry Calculate the area of the following shapes. It may be necessary to break up the figure into common shapes m 2. 6 m 12 m 22 m 16 m 15 m 18 m Area = Area = Calculate the unknown angle values for questions A C B D m E F G H n ϕ Lines m and n are parallel. = 16 A = 75 B = C = D = ϕ = E = F = G = H = = 3 2 = 3 = A B C = 37 D 4 = A = B = 5 = C = D =

Part 4: 3: Trigonometry Write the formulas for each one of the following trigonometric functions. Remember SOHCAHTOA sin = cos = tan = Calculate the following unknowns using trigonometry. Use a calculator, but show all of your work. Please include appropriate units with all answers. (Watch the unit prefixes) 12 m 1. y 2. d y 3. x 59.3 km x = 17 = 30 = 60 y = d x = x = d x y x = d y = y = 39.8 m c mm m 6. R 1.4 m d c = R = d = = = = y d = m 21.6 km x 13.7 m R y = x = R = = d = =

Part 4: Proportions In this class it will be important to understand how variables relate to each other based on a given equation. It s one thing to be able to plug and chug, but another to be able to clearly communicate how different quantities are related to each other by reading the equations. The sections below are examples of how you should be able to qualitatively describe how variables affect one another. A) State what happens to the identified variable based on the given equation and what s changing. Assume all other variables remain the same. Answer the following as increases, decreases, or remains the same. 1. = $ % As d increases, v increases 2. = $ % Aa t increases, v 3. & = 2( ) * As l increases, T 4. & = 2( ) * As g increases, T B) We can analyze these equations more specifically if we know how much a value is increasing or decreasing by. Each of the following will give an equation and by how much one of the variables is changing. State how many times the specified value changes and be sure to say if it s increasing or decreasing. Hint: rewrite the old equation with the new change in it to see how many times larger or smaller the new equation becomes (see Proof below). Include proofs for each 5. = $ % d doubles so, v becomes 2x larger +)$ = $ %,-. = /$ % = 2 +)$ 6. = $ % t triples, so v becomes 7. 0 = 1 / 23/ t quadruples (4x), so x becomes 8. 0 = 1 / 23/ t is now one third as large (three times smaller), so x becomes 9. & = 2( ) * l doubles, so T becomes 10. & = 2( ) * For T to double, l must become (careful) = M and m both double, so F becomes = M becomes 5 times larger and r becomes 5 times smaller (1/5th ), so F becomes = for F to become 49 times larger, r must become = M doubles, m quadruples, and r 1/4th as much. F becomes:

Part 5: Physics The final section of the summer assignment will be comprised of several sections of textbook reading and the completion of questions. For each section you should take notes; while the format is up to you, they should demonstrate that you read and recognized key information. The reading will be from the online, open source, physics textbook: College Physics by openstax. There is an option to download a pdf version if you wish. On a separate piece of paper you should label each section, record your notes, then complete the problems. 1) Section 2.1: Displacement Q1) Starting at your house, you walk 1km due east then turn left and walk another 0.5km due north. What was the distance you traveled? What was your displacement? Hint: these answers aren t the same Q2) Give an example of an object that, after a time t, has zero displacement but non-zero distance. Q3) Can an object have some (nonzero) displacement but no distance? Explain 2) Section 2.2: Vectors Q1) Based on what your prior knowledge, write if the following are vectors or scalars. Guessing is totally fine (a) weight (b) volume (c) time (d) density (e) force Q2) Explain how it s just as valid to say that an object is 3m away as it is to say it s 26m away. Q3) An object moves to the left 9m. It then turns around and moves to the right 5m. What s the object s displacement if rightward is positive? What s the object s displacement if leftward is positive? Q4) A car is moving at 60mph is an example of a scalar. What would you need to make that a vector? 3) Section 2.3: Time, Velocity, and Speed Q1) Which is more correct: A car traveled around the track at a constant velocity or A car traveled around the track at a constant speed? Explain how you know. Q2) A spaceship travels at 8,000 m/s. The time it takes to blink an eye is 110miliseconds (ms). How many football fields (92m) does the ship travel in a blink of an eye? Q3) A spry high school student can run a 10km course with an average speed of 4.4 m/s. Geriatric Mr. Thrasher can run the same distance with an average speed of 3.27 m/s. How much later, in seconds, should a high school runner start in order to finish the course at the same time as Mr. Thrasher? 4) Section 2.4: Acceleration Q1) If an object is speeding up, how does the direction of the velocity vector and acceleration vector compare? How do they compare if an object is slowing down? Q2) At a given time, a car and a truck are driving side-by-side on the highway. The car has a greater velocity than the truck. Does the car necessarily have a greater acceleration? Q3) An object can have a velocity of zero and a nonzero acceleration (really). Give an example of this (researching online is OK). Q4) A motorcyclist starts at rest and has a constant acceleration of 3m/s 2 which she sustains for 1.7s. Her acceleration then drops to zero for the rest of the race. What is her velocity at (a) t=1.1s and (b) at the end of the race. Q5) A jogger in a race covers half the remaining distance to the finish line every 10 seconds. If he s running in a straight line and is always moving forward (doesn t reverse direction), does he have a constant acceleration? Explain how you know.
