1 New Year 12 Students As you may be aware there have been many changes to the way A-Levels are run in most subjects and science specifically has seen major changes. Here is a brief outline of the course: Module 1 Development of practical skills Module 2 Foundations of physics Module 3 Forces and motion Module 4 Electrons, waves and photons Module 5 Newtonian world Module 6 Particles and medical physics In year 12 you will study modules 1-4 and in year 13 you will focus on modules 1, 5 and 6. There are no longer AS exams and you will sit three exams at the end of year 13. There will no longer be any practical exams. These have been replaced by a set of assessed practicals selected by the exam board which must be conducted in lessons for a grade to be awarded, however the practicals will not contribute to your final grade. The transition from GCSE to A-Level is something that many students find very difficult and to help this process it is important you come with a good knowledge of GCSE physics. The two year 12 modules follow on directly from the P2 work you will have completed this year. It is vital that this summer work is completed in full and returned to your teacher in the first physics lesson in September. How much energy will the radio use if it is switched on for one hour? 4. Electricity costs 14p per kwh. How much will it cost to have a 3 kw electric heater switched on for 3 hours?

6 5. A household uses 600 kwh of energy over 3 months. If electricity costs 7.5p per kwh, what will the mean average cost of electricity be for each month? 6. An electric car has a power of 4.8kW and it takes 4 hours to fully charge. A full charge of the car costs How much does electricity cost per kwh? 7. An electric drill converts 1000j of electrical energy into 580j to kinetic energy and 20j of sound energy. The remaining energy passes to the surroundings as thermal energy. Calculate the efficiency of the drill. 8. A radio is supplied with 50j of electrical energy and converts this into 5 j of sound energy with the rest wasted as heat. a. How many joules of heat does the radio transfer to the surroundings? b. What is the efficiency of the radio? 9. A step up transformer is made up of a primary and secondary coil of wire. There are 5 coils on the primary and 10 coils on the secondary coil of wire. a. What is the voltage on the primary coil if 75V is measured on the secondary coil of wire? b. What is the voltage on the secondary coil is 25V is input on the primary coil?

7 10. Calculate the current flowing when a hairdryer with a power of 1250W is plugged into the mains (230V). 11. How long does it take for a train travelling at 27m/s to cover 3.5km? 12. What is the voltage powering the circuit if the total power is 17kW and the current flowing through is 850A? 13. Calculate the resistance of a resistor with a potential difference of 18v and a current passing of 0.7A. 14. A plane travels down a 1750m runway in 42 seconds, calculate its speed. 15. Two men (68kg and 71kg) are in a bobsleigh weighing 52kg. Calculate the force exerted on the ice. 16. What current flows through a 30V lawnmower which has a resistance of 18ohms? 17. How much energy is transferred when an electric fan with runs for 240 seconds on a 1.5 volt battery with a current of 7mA flowing through the circuit?

8 18. A motorbike increases its speed from 6m/s to 28m/s in 3.2 seconds, calculate the acceleration. 19. How much energy is transferred by an electric shower which has a power rating of 2.2kW and is on for 15minutes. 20. The resultant force on a car (900kg) is 1700N calculate the acceleration of the car. 21. A cyclist (80kg) riding a bike (40kg) decelerate at 0.6m/s 2 calculate the braking force. 22. Light travels at 300,000 km/s. Calculate how many metres it travels in one minute. 23. What is the efficiency of a toaster that uses a total of 1800J of energy of which 350j are wasted. 24. Sound travels at 330m/s if the sound waves have a wavelength of 0.05m calculate the frequency. 25. Blue light has a frequency of 7x10 14 Hz and a wavelength of 4.29x10-7 m what is the velocity?

9 As part of your course you will need to be able to describe how to carry out experiments. Some are simple experiments you will conduct in the lab and some are famous experiments in physics. You will need to write about two experiments in the next section. We do not expect you to know this you will need to do some research on the internet before completing this section. 1) Describe an experiment to measure the acceleration due to gravity. You should include: A diagram of the set-up A brief method What measurements will you need to take? How will you calculate the acceleration from your results? Any reasons your results may not be totally accurate.

10 2) Write a brief report on Einstein s photoelectric effect experiment. You should include: Describe the experiment set up. Draw a diagram of the equipment. What happened? What the experiment showed.
