N a m e : _ AP Physics 1 Summer Assignment Concepts and Connections of Math in Physics: Review This assignment is designed to refresh the student with an understanding of conceptual math problems that will have connections to physical applications in the course. All content should have been learned successfully by the student prior to taking this course. The math in review is a large portion of the understanding behind the physical phenomena we will investigate, and therefore it is the expectation that the student will review the material in detail, where necessary, in order to be prepared for the connections we will make in class. These math topics will be reviewed once we return, but no time is available to reteach the content in class. Have a wonderful summer and I will see you in the fall! Mr. Pappa Part 1: /5 Part 2: /12 Part 3: /7 Part 4: /8 Part 5: /6 Part 6: /12 TOTAL: /50 1

Part 1 - Solving Equations: Manipulating Variables Often in Physics you will find that solving for one variable is necessary. This will require you to review your algebra skills. For each of the following, solve for the indicated variable, but don t let the different letters confuse you! Just follow the order of operations and solve as if they were numbers you were moving. (1 point for each correct answer) 2

Part 2 Scientific Notation Many physics problems will deal with numbers so ridiculously large or small that it is just not convenient to write out all the zeroes. Scientific notation is the saving grace in these cases. Below are some ordinary physics problems. Write the answer in scientific notation and simplify the units. You may use (π = 3). (1 point for each correct answer, 1 for each correct unit) 3

Part 3 Unit Conversions Science uses the KMS system (have you heard of SI: System Internationale??). KMS stands for kilogram, meters, seconds. These are the units of choice in physics. Each equation depends on these unit agreements, sooooooooooo. YOU MUST(!!!) convert to KMS in most problems to arrive at the correct answer. What happens if I don t know a conversion factor? Colleges (and most employers) want students who can find their own information, sooooooooooooooo take a hint and look it up yourself!!! Most notebooks or physics textbooks or have conversion tables in the front or back. The internet can also be useful from time to time Enjoy! (1 point for each correct conversion) a m = cm b. 298 K = C c. 6.23x10-7 m = nm d. 1.5x10 11 g = kg e μs = s f. 823 ml = m 3 g. 1.2 atm = Pa 4

Part 4 Geometry Solve the following geometric problems (1 point for each problem) a. b. Line B touches the circle at a single point. Line A extends through the center of the circle. i. What is line B in reference to the circle (what kind of line is it)? ii. How large is the angle between lines A and B? In the triangle what is angle C? c. What is angle θ? d. How large is θ? e. The radius of a circle is 5.5 cm. i. What is the circumference in meters? ii. What is the area in square meters? f. What is the area under the curve at the right? 5

Part 5 Trigonometry Using the generic triangle in the upper right, Right Triangle Trigonometry and Pythagorean Theorem solve the following (if you use a calculator make sure you are in degree mode). (1 point for each correct problem) a. Θ = 55 and c = 32 m, solve for a and b. b. Θ = 45 and a = 15 m/s, solve for b and c. c. b = 17.8 m and Θ = 65, solve for a and c. d. a = 250 m and b = 180 m, solve for θ and c. e. a = 25 cm and c = 32 cm, solve for θ and b. f. b = 104 cm and c = 65 cm, solve for a and θ.

Part 6 Vectors Vectors Most of the quantities in physics are vectors. This makes proficiency in vectors extremely important. Magnitude: Size or extent. The numerical value. Direction: Alignment or orientation of any position with respect to any other position. Scalars: A physical quantity described by a single number and units. A quantity described by magnitude only. Examples: time, mass, and temperature Vector: A physical quantity with both a magnitude and a direction. A directional quantity. Examples: velocity, acceleration, force Notation: A or A Length of the arrow is proportional to the vectors magnitude. Direction the arrow points is the direction of the vector. Negative Vectors Negative vectors have the same magnitude as their positive counterpart. They are just pointing in the opposite direction. A A Vector Addition and subtraction Think of it as vector addition only. The result of adding vectors is called the resultant. R A B A + B = R So if A has a magnitude of 3 and B has a magnitude of 2, then R has a magnitude of 3+2=5 This is very important. In physics a negative number does not always mean a smaller number. Mathematically 2 is smaller than +2, but in physics these numbers have the same magnitude (size), they just point in different directions (180 o apart).

There are two methods of adding vectors It is readily apparent that both methods arrive at the exact same solution since either method is essentially a parallelogram. It is useful to understand both systems. In some problems one method is advantageous, while in other problems the alternative method is superior. Draw the resultant vector using the parallelogram method of vector addition

Draw the resultant vector using the tip to tail method of vector addition. Label the resultant as vector R Direction: What does positive or negative direction mean? How is it referenced? The answer is the coordinate axis system. In physics a coordinate axis system is used to give a problem a frame of reference. Positive direction is a vector moving in the positive x or positive y direction, while a negative vector moves in the negative x or negative y direction (This also applies to the z direction, which will be used sparingly in this course). What about vectors that don t fall on the axis? You must specify their direction using degrees measured from East.

Component Vectors A resultant vector is a vector resulting from the sum of two or more other vectors. Mathematically the resultant has the same magnitude and direction as the total of the vectors that compose the resultant. Could a vector be described by two or more other vectors? Would they have the same total result? This is the reverse of finding the resultant. You are given the resultant and must find the component vectors on the coordinate axis that describe the resultant. Any vector can be described by an x axis vector and a y axis vector which summed together mean the exact same thing. The advantage is you can then use plus and minus signs for direction instead of the angle. For the following vectors draw the component vectors along the x and y axis. See you in the fall! ~Mr. T
