3 Graduate Nvice Obedience Training Graduate Nvice is pen t 4-H members wh have nt advanced t Open with the dg each member is shwing. Members shuld nt advance t Graduate Nvice until they and their dgs are cmpetent in Nvice. Graduate Nvice is a cmbinatin f Nvice and Open exercises. The Heel On-Lead and Stand fr Examinatin are dne as in the Nvice class. The Figure 8 is dne ff-lead, a drp is added t the Recall exercise, and the Stay exercises are dne with the trainer ut f the dg's sight (ut f sight). As training cntinues, it's imprtant t review the training terms and exercises in the Pre-Nvice and Nvice sectins. Any time the dg has truble with an exercise, g back and review previus steps. Instructins fr Heeling On- and Off-Lead and the Stand Fr Examinatin are presented in the Nvice sectin. The Graduate Nvice sectin fcuses n new exercises nly. The first lessn plan is the Mving-Drp, which must be mastered befre training fr the Drp-On-Recall begins. Stick Jumping, the final lessn plan in this sectin, is a fun exercise that teaches jumping frm and prepares a dg fr advanced jumping exercises. Yu shuld start this exercise lng befre Open training begins; it als can be used as an exercise dne in the trick class. Dgs enjy stick jumping, and this handy training tl can crrect many ptential jumping prblems. Graduate Nvice Class Descriptin Exercises Pints Heel On-Leash 30 Stand Fr Examinatin 30 Heel Free and Figure 8 40 Drp-On-Recall 40 Lng Sit (3 minutes ut f sight) 30 Lng Dwn (5 minutes ut f sight) 30 Ttal pints 200 Graduate Nvice Exercise Perfrmance and Scring AKC Obedience Regulatins All exercises are perfrmed and scred as utlined in the AKC Obedience Regulatins. The fllwing Graduate Nvice Exercise Perfrmance and Scring is cntained in the AKC Obedience Publicatin. Since there are ccasinal AKC rule changes, yu'll find it extremely helpful t rder a free cpy f the AKC Obedience Regulatins directly frm the American Kennel Club, 51 Madisn Avenue, New Yrk, New Yrk Heel On-Leash The principal feature f this exercise is the ability f the dg and handler t wrk as a team. Orders fr the exercise are: "Frward" "Abut turn" "Halt" "Slw" "Right turn" "Nrmal" "Left turn" "Fast" "Fast" signifies that the handler must run, with handler and dg mving frward at nticeably accelerated speed. In executing the Abut turn, the handler always will d a Right Abut turn. Orders fr "Halts" and 'Turns" will be given nly when the handler is mving at a "Nrmal" speed. The rders may be given in any sequence and may be repeated as necessary, but the Judge shall attempt t standardize the heeling pattern fr all dgs in any class. The leash may be held in either hand r in bth hands, prviding the hands are in a natural psitin. Hwever, any tightening r jerking f the leash r any act, signal, r cmmand which in the Judge's pinin gives the dg assistance shall be penalized. The handler shall enter the ring with her dg n a lse leash and stand with the dg sitting in the Heel psitin. The Judge shall ask if the handler is ready befre giving the rder, "Frward." The handler may give a cmmand r signal t Heel, and shall walk briskly and in a natural manner with her dg n a lse leash. The dg shall walk clse t the left side f the handler withut swinging wide, lagging, frging, r crwding. 41-

4 Heel On-Leash, cntinued Whether heeling r sitting, the dg must nt interfere with the handler's freedm f mtin at any time. At each rder t Halt, the handler will stp and her dg shall sit straight and prmptly in the Heel psitin withut cmmand r signal, and shall nt mve until the handler again mves frward n rder frm the Judge. It is permissible after each Halt, befre mving again, fr the handler t give a cmmand r signal t Heel. The Judge shall say "Exercise finished" after this prtin f the exercise. Heel On-Leash, Scring If a dg is unmanageable, r if its handler cnstantly cntrls its perfrmance by tugging n the leash r adapts pace t that f the dg, the dg must be scred zer. Substantial deductins shall be made fr additinal cmmands r signals t Heel and fr failure f dg r handler t nticeably accelerate speed frward fr the Fast and nticeably decelerate speed frward fr the Slw. Substantial r minr deductins shall be made fr such things as lagging, heeling wide, frging, crwding, pr sits, handler failing t walk at a brisk pace, ccasinal guidance with leash, and ther imperfectins in heeling. In scring this exercise, the Judge shall accmpany the handler at a discreet distance s that he r she can bserve any signals r cmmands given by the handler t the dg. The Judge must d s withut interfering with either dg r handler. Stand fr Examinatin The principal features f this exercise are that the dg stand in psitin befre and during the examinatin, and that the dg display neither shyness nr resentment. Orders are "Stand yur dg and leave when yu are ready," "Back t yur dg," and "Exercise finished." There will be n further cmmand frm the Judge t the handler t leave the dg. On Judge's rder, the handler shall remve the leash and give it t a Steward wh shall place it n the Judge's table r ther designated place. The handler will take his dg t the place indicated by the Judge, and n Judge's rder, the handler will stand and/r pse his dg ff-leash by the methd f his chice, taking any reasnable time if he chses t pse the dg as in the shw ring. When he is ready, the handler will stand with the dg in the heel psitin and give his cmmand and/r signal t the dg t Stay, walk frward abut 6 feet in frnt f the dg, turn arund, and stand facing the dg. The Judge shall apprach the dg frm the frnt and shall tuch nly the dg's head, bdy, and hindquarters, using the fingers and palm f ne hand nly. The Judge then shall rder, "Back t yur dg," whereupn the handler shall walk arund behind his dg and return t the Heel psitin. The dg must remain standing until after the Judge has said "Exercise finished." Stand fr Examinatin, Scring The scring f this exercise will nt start until the handler has given the cmmand and/r signal t Stay, except fr such things as rugh treatment f the dg by its handler r active resistance by the dg t its handler's attempts t make it stand. Either f these shall be penalized substantially. A dg shall be scred zer if it displays shyness r resentment, grwls r snaps at any time, sits r lies dwn befre r during the examinatin, r mves away frm the place where it was left either befre r during the examinatin. Minr r substantial deductins, depending n the circumstance, shall be made fr a dg that mves its feet at any time r sits r mves away after the examinatin has been cmpleted. Heel Free, Perfrmance and Scring This exercise shall be executed in the same manner as Heel On-Leash and Figure 8, except that the dg shall be ff-leash and that there shall be n Figure 8. Orders and scring shall be the same als. Figure 8 Perfrmance and Scring Befre starting the Figure 8, the Judge shall ask if the handler is ready. The Figure 8 signifies that n specific rders frm the Judge t Frward and Halt, the handler and dg, frm a starting psitin abut equidistant frm the tw Stewards and facing the Judge, shall walk briskly twice cmpletely arund and between the tw Stewards, wh shall stand 8 feet apart. The Figure 8 in the Graduate Nvice class shall be dne ff-lead. The handler may chse t g in either directin. There shall be n Abut turn r Fast r Slw in the Figure 8, but the Judge must rder at least ne Halt during and anther Halt at the end f this prtin f the exercise.

5 Drp-On-Recall The principal features f this exercise, in additin t thse listed under the Nvice Recall, are the dg's prmpt respnse t the handler's cmmand r signal t Drp, and the dg's remaining in the Dwn psitin until again called r signaled t Cme. The dg will be judged n the prmptness f its respnse t cmmand r signal and nt n its prximity t a designated pint. Orders fr the exercise are "Leave yur dg," "Call yur dg," a signal t Drp the dg, anther "Call yur dg," and "Finish." The Judge's signal must be clear t the handler but nt bvius r distracting t the dg. On rder frm the Judge, the handler may give cmmand and/r signal fr the dg t Stay in the Sit psitin while the handler walks frward abut 35 feet t the ther end f the ring, where she shall turn and stand in a natural manner facing her dg. On Judge's rder r signal, the handler shall give cmmand r signal t Cme and the dg must start directly in at a brisk trt r gallp. On the Judge's arm r hand signal, the handler shall give cmmand r signal t Drp, and the dg must immediately drp cmpletely t the Dwn psitin, where he must remain until, n Judge's rder r signal, the handler again gives cmmand r signal t Cme. The dg then cmpletes the exercise as in the Nvice Recall. Drp-On-Recall, Scring All applicable penalties listed under the Nvice Recall shall apply. In additin, a scre f zer is required fr a dg that des nt drp cmpletely t the Dwn psitin n a single cmmand r signal, and fr a dg that drps but des nt remain dwn until called r signaled. Substantial deductins varying with the extent, even t the pint f zer, shall be made fr delayed r slw respnse t the handler's cmmand r signal t Drp, fr delay r slwness t Dwn, and fr slw respnse t either f the Recalls. All penalties as in the Nvice Recall shall apply. Grup Exercises, Perfrmance and Scring During the Lng Sit and the Lng Dwn exercises, the Judge shall stand in such a psitin that all f the dgs are in his r her line f visin, and where he r she can see all the handlers in the ring r handlers leaving and returning t the ring withut having t turn arund. These exercises are perfrmed in the same manner as in the Nvice classes, except that after leaving their dgs, the handlers must crss t the ppsite side f the ring and then leave the ring in single file, as directed by the Judge. They then must g t a place designated by the Judge, cmpletely ut f sight f their dgs, where they must remain until called by the Judge after the expiratin f the time limit f 3 minutes in the Lng Sit and 5 minutes in the Lng Dwn, frm the time the Judge gave the rder t "Leave yur dgs." On rder frm the Judge, the handlers shall return t the ring in single file in reverse rder, lining up facing their dgs at the ppsite side f the ring, and return t their dgs n rder frm the Judge. Orders and scring are the same as in the Nvice Grup exercises.
